The appeal was made during the AfDB Annual Meetings held in Brazzaville on Wednesday where Mwanamvekha highlighted pressures arising from fuel, fertilizer, foreign exchange, food, and pharmaceutical shortages.

AFDB President Sidi Ould Tah assured Malawi that the Bank would consider the country's request for additional crisis-response support.

Cambodia has ordered African nationals currently benefiting from immigration waivers to leave the country by May 31, 2026, or face arrest, imprisonment, and heavy fines.

The directive reportedly affects nationals from countries including Ghana, Kenya, Cameroon, and Uganda.

Cambodian immigration authorities warned that anyone found overstaying from June 1 could face up to two years in prison and an $8,000 fine before deportation.

Officials also stated that police operations targeting overstayers would intensify after the deadline.

The reported order follows the expiration of a temporary immigration waiver programme previously granted to some African nationals living in Cambodia.

Border management authorities have intercepted a truck carrying drugs worth R1 billion at the Beitbridge Border Post.

The vehicle was travelling from Malawi to South Africa when officials conducted a routine check and detected suspicious substances on Wednesday.

Border Management Authority (BMA) spokesperson Mmemme Mogotsi said they found 700,000 grams of mandrax.

“During the operation, officials discovered a substance identified as methaqualone, commonly used in the manufacturing of mandrax. The South African Police Service K-9 Unit, together with the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, commonly known as the Hawks, were immediately activated to assist with processing the crime scene and further investigations.”

BMA Commissioner Dr Michael Masiapato stated that the interception demonstrates the effectiveness of intelligence-led border security operations and the importance of integrated collaboration among law enforcement agencies.

South African immigration officials say only 10 of nearly 300 Ghanaians registered for voluntary return were legally living in the country.

Home Affairs official Stephen van Neel said most were undocumented, non-compliant, or had overstayed their permits.

The development comes amid ongoing tensions in South Africa over immigration, where foreign nationals have faced hostility and accusations of taking jobs meant for South Africans.
