PYJAMA NIGHT WITH PASTOR PRISCILLA ZIBA

Pastor Priscilla Ziba, wife to the Founder of Fountain of Victory Church International, Apostle Joseph Ziba had a wonderful time in the presence of the Lord with the girls at their house during the Pyjama Night which falls under Girls Hut Ministry. The pyjama night is one of the activities the church uses to mentor young girls.
The Girls Hut is a mentorship program designed to guide young girls in becoming godly women through biblical teaching, character development and life empowerment. It provides a platform where older women mentor younger girls on how to conduct themselves in a Christ-like and purposeful manner. The program focuses on mentorship in the following areas:

- Service in church
- Behaviour and character building
Training in righteousness and the fear of the Lord
- Purity and personal hygiene
- Home management
Church administration and discipline (Titus 2:3โ€“5)

This year God directed me to start building them in the following areas:

1. Identity in Christ: Helping the young girls understand who they are as children of God, who they have become in Christ, and how to discover their destiny and purpose in life.

2. Ministry Empowerment: aiming at raising reliable future Christian leaders such as intercessors, administrators, teachers, and other servants in the body of Christ. We also helped them learn how to stand firm spiritually, fight the good fight of faith, and remain disciplined and faithful soldiers of Christ through godly character and conduct.

3. Career Advancement, Skills, and Talents: encouraging the girls to develop their God-given talents, pursue education and careers with excellence, and build confidence in their abilities.

4. Business Empowerment: encouraging the young girls on the importance of gaining knowledge in entrepreneurship and financial wisdom so they can become independent and responsible women in the future.

GOVERNMENT PLEDGES BETTER WELFARE FOR MIDWIVES AT NATIONAL COMMEMORATION

The Ministry of Health and Sanitation has pledged to improve the welfare, working conditions and recognition of midwives across the country.

Minister of Health, Madalitso Baloyi, made the commitment during the commemoration of the International Day of the Midwife held in Mzimba on May 5. She praised midwives for their dedication and important role in saving the lives of mothers and newborns.

Baloyi said government will invest more in training, recruitment and retention of midwives. She also promised improvements in working conditions through better infrastructure, adequate medical supplies and access to essential equipment.

The minister acknowledged that many midwives face challenges such as staff shortages, long working hours and limited resources, but continue to provide life-saving care.
During the event, the Association of Malawian Midwives awarded Baloyi an honorary midwifery certificate in recognition of her efforts.

The associationโ€™s president, Mumudelanji Keith Lipato, called for urgent action on allowances, promotions and overall welfare.
This yearโ€™s event was held under the theme โ€œOne Million More Midwives.โ€

GOVERNMENT ASSURES TO***CO FARMERS OF MARKET AS MZUZU FLOORS OPEN

The Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development, Roza Fatch Mbilizi, has assured to***co farmers that all to***co taken to the market will be bought during the 2026 marketing season.

She made the remarks during the official opening of the Mzuzu Auction Floors, where she said government is working closely with industry players to address challenges affecting the to***co market. Mbilizi emphasized that no farmer should be left with unsold to***co, as efforts are being made to create a fair and reliable market for all growers.

The minister explained that discussions with buyers, regulators and other stakeholders are ongoing to improve transparency and efficiency in the system. She added that government is committed to protecting farmersโ€™ incomes and strengthening the agriculture sector.

Speaking on behalf of farmers, Abel Kumwenda thanked the minister for encouraging dialogue among key players. He said farmers had raised concerns that buyers were favoring contract to***co over auction sales.

Kumwenda noted that the situation has now improved, giving farmers renewed hope for better sales this season.

HIGH COURT BACKS ACB ON AMARYLLIS ACCOUNTS, ALLOWS HOTEL OPERATIONS TO CONTINUE

The High Court of Malawi has upheld a decision by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) to keep restrictions on some bank accounts linked to the Amaryllis Hotel transaction.

In a ruling delivered on 4 May 2026, Redson Kapindu said the ACB acted within the law by preserving certain accounts as part of ongoing investigations. He explained that such measures are important to protect public interest and prevent possible misuse of funds.

However, the court also allowed the release of operational accounts used by the hotel. This decision aims to ensure that normal business activities continue without disruption.
Justice Kapindu stressed that while fighting corruption is important, authorities must also protect legitimate economic activity.

The court further confirmed that the ACB has the legal power to preserve assets and continue investigations where there are reasonable grounds.

ROADS AUTHORITY MOVES TO AWARD MULTI-MILLION KWACHA ROAD SUPERVISION CONTRACTS

The Roads Authority has announced its intention to award several contracts for the supervision of road and bridge maintenance projects across the country for the 2025โ€“2026 financial year.

In a notification dated May 2, 2026, the authority informed all bidders that the decision has been made in line with Section 70 of the Public Procurement and Disposal Act of 2025. The announcement marks the beginning of a standstill period, during which unsuccessful bidders can request debriefings or submit complaints regarding the procurement process.

According to the notice, Pamodzi Services has been recommended for the Rumphi Zone contract valued at over MWK 851 million, while MSCAT Engineers will handle the Kasungu Zone at about MWK 941 million. L Gravam Services is set for the Lilongwe Zone contract worth nearly MWK 966 million.

Other successful bidders include Uranus/Malcon Joint Venture for the Zomba Zone and Kandoli/AES Joint Venture for the Blantyre Zone, with contracts valued at over MWK 931 million and MWK 975 million respectively.

A local governance commentator, Mr. Peter Mvula, welcomed the development, saying transparent procurement is key to improving public trust. The standstill period will end on May 15, 2026.

CAMA OPPOSES RETURN OF POWER MARKET LIMITED OVER TARIFF CONCERNS

The Consumers Association of Malawi (CAMA) has strongly opposed the re-establishment of Power Market Limited (PML), warning that the move could lead to higher electricity tariffs and worsen the economic burden on consumers.

In a press release issued on May 4, 2026, CAMA Executive Director John Kapito said the return of PML would have serious negative implications, particularly due to increased administrative costs. He noted that in 2023, a proposed 99 percent electricity tariff hike included about 30 percent attributed to PMLโ€™s administrative expenses, despite the institution showing little benefit to consumers.

CAMA also highlighted that access to electricity in Malawi remains very low, with only about 11 to 15 percent of the population connected to the grid. High electricity costs and frequent power outages have been identified as major barriers to wider access.
The association recalled that PML was previously discontinued due to its adverse impact on consumer welfare. It argued that its functions should remain under ESCOM until the power market grows significantly, especially with increased participation from independent power producers.

CAMA has since urged the government to prioritize strengthening ESCOMโ€™s efficiency instead of reintroducing PML, emphasizing the need to protect consumers from further tariff increases.
