Nigeria Reportedly Declines South African Presidential Envoy Over Anti-Xenophobia Agreement

Nigeria has reportedly declined to grant an audience to a special envoy sent by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, insisting that South Africa first signs a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on an Early Warning Mechanism to prevent and respond to xenophobic violence.

According to reports, the proposed agreement is intended to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in addressing attacks targeting foreign nationals and improving mechanisms for early intervention.

The South African delegation, led by Minister Ronald Lamola, was instead received by Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, rather than President Bola Tinubu.

The reported development underscores ongoing diplomatic efforts to address recurring concerns over xenophobic attacks in South Africa, which have previously affected Nigerian nationals and strained relations between Africa’s two largest economies.
