Jenda Police Station has strongly condemned an incident of mob violence that led to the death of a 62-year-old woman during a funeral ceremony at Chakwanika Village, Luwerezi, in Mzimba District.

The incident occurred on January 29, 2026, when the deceased, identified as Mercy Tembo, was allegedly assaulted by a group of mourners following a confrontation at the funeral service.

Mcfaren Mseteka spokesperson for Jenda Police said preliminary investigations indicate that Tembo publicly criticized villagers and relatives of her late daughter-in-law over the arrest of her son, who is currently in police custody in connection with his wife’s death.

According to Mseteka, the verbal exchange escalated into physical violence when Tembo allegedly attacked the mother of her deceased daughter-in-law and in retaliation, members of the bereaved family reportedly descended on Tembo, beating her severely until she lost consciousness.

She was rushed to Nkhamenya Mission Hospital for medical attention but later died while receiving treatment. No arrests had been announced by press time as investigations were still underway.

Meanwhile, Mseteka has expressed grave concern over the rising cases of mob justice within the station’s jurisdiction, warning that such acts undermine the rule of law and violate fundamental human rights.

OC Jenda Visits Inkosi Ya Makhosi M’mbelwa V

In a bid to strengthen community policing and collaboration, the Officer-In-Charge of Jenda Police Station, Deputy Commissioner John Nkhoma, paid a courtesy call on Inkosi Ya Makhosi M’mbelwa V at Edingeni Headquarters on January 28, 2026.

The meeting centered on reinforcing the vital partnership between the Malawi Police Service (MPS) and traditional authorities with a focus on the need to improve security coverage across the community.

While acknowledging the operational challenges posed by the vast area, DCP Nkhoma pledged to increase manpower and resources in various police units to enhance service delivery.

Inkosi Ya Makhosi M’mbelwa V welcomed the strengthened collaboration and expressed concern over the rising cases of su***de and murder in the district,therefore urging the law enforcers to work closely with the chieftaincy to find effective ways of addressing these vices.

The Inkosi also highlighted mobility challenges faced by police stations in the district, noting that limited transport capacity continues to affect response times during emergencies.

This engagement underscores a strategic shift towards grassroots, partnership-driven policing aimed at improving safety and trust within the community.

Police at Jenda in Mzimba district have arrested 28-year-old Arnold Banda in connection with the mysterious death of his wife, whose body was found hanging from a tree on Monday morning, January 27, 2026.

According to Macfarlen Mseteka, spokesperson of Jenda police, the arrest follows inconsistencies in the story surrounding the woman’s death, which was initially reported as a su***de by the suspect's family.

Mseteka said investigations revealed that on January 26, 2026, a domestic dispute ensued between the couple after Banda discovered his wife had gone to perform piecework without his knowledge.

Following the misunderstanding, Banda allegedly launched a frantic, aggressive search for her throughout the day, and on the morning of January 27, the wife was discovered hanging from a tree at Luwerezi.

While initial reports suggested su***de, police and medical personnel who visited the scene found suspicious circumstances, and postmortem conducted on site indicated that the cause of death was suffocation, with findings of a twisted neck, contradicting the su***de narrative.

Banda is expected to appear in court soon to answer charges related to the death of his wife.

Agro Dealers Arrested at Jenda for Selling Counterfeit Products.

Police at Jenda in Mzimba have arrested 11 individuals suspected of selling counterfeit agricultural inputs, including fertilizer and maize seed, following reports from farmers who had been duped into purchasing fake products.

These agro dealers were arrested on November 27, 2025, during an intelligence-driven operation the station conducted.

The suspects were apprehended for selling counterfeit fertilizer and maize seed. Police have seized 100 bags of suspected NPK counterfeit fertilizer and 18 packets of fake maize seed during the operation.

All suspects are expected to appear in court soon to face charges related to their offences. Suspected fake products have also been referred to the Malawi Bureau of Standards for testing and authentication.

Police urge community members to purchase farm inputs only from authorized dealers to avoid being sold counterfeit products, which negatively impact crop yields and farmers’ livelihoods.

Jenda Police Station, led by Station Officer Superintendent Kennedy Mwakaswaya, on November 27, 2025, held an interface meeting with the Embangweni business community and local chiefs to promote ethical business practices and community safety.

Mwakaswaya urged agro-dealers to source certified agricultural inputs such as fertilizer and seed to protect farmers from counterfeit products. He also warned butchers against buying stolen cattle and appealed to Inkosana Chitete Jere to ensure land disputes are handled transparently to prevent violence.

The Community Policing coordinator highlighted offences related to selling fake inputs and advised shop owners to strengthen security by hiring capable guards. Business representative Mr. Maplilisi pledged compliance with business regulations, while Inkosana Jere called for strict action against illegal traders.

Assistant Superintendent Kandaya addressed road safety, cautioning motorcycle riders against reckless driving and reminding the community that using lorries to ferry passengers is unlawful.

The meeting brought together agro-dealers, butchers, motorcycle riders, and chiefs from surrounding areas, who expressed commitment to working with police to safeguard farmers and the wider community.
