FAM President Fleetwood Haiya Hails Young Scorchers for Historic Victory

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) President Fleetwood Haiya has congratulated the Malawi Under-20 Women’s National Football Team, the Young Scorchers, for their 3–1 aggregate triumph over South Sudan, a result that has secured them a place in the third round of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup Qualifiers.

Haiya described the victory as a proud moment for the country and a sign of Malawi’s growing influence in women’s football.

“Congratulations to the Young Scorchers! With a 3–1 aggregate win over South Sudan, our girls have booked their place in the third round of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup Qualifiers,” Haiya said.

He emphasized that the milestone is more than just a win on the pitch, but a reflection of the progress Malawi football is making at all levels.

“This is a significant step for Malawi football as we continue to make strides to dominate and shine on the continental and global stage,” he added.

Haiya also encouraged the players to remain focused and determined as they prepare for the next stage of qualifiers.

“Our journey is far from over. I urge the girls to keep working hard and believing in themselves. They have already made the nation proud, and we believe they can go even further,” he said.

The Young Scorchers will now shift their attention to their next opponents as the dream of reaching the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup inches closer to reality.

*Man dies of electrocution in Mzuzu*

A 50-year-old man, Happy Mbizi, has died suddenly after being electrocuted in Mzuzu.

The incident occurred on September 24, 2025, at around 07:00 hours in Lower Chasefu Township in the city.

It has been reported that Mbizi was working as a maize mill operator and was given a house within the maize mill premises where he was staying alone.

On September 23, 2025, he did not report to work, and the owner of the maize mill assumed that he had gone to attend a funeral ceremony within the area.

On September 24, 2025, Mbizi's employer decided to check on him. Upon opening the house, he found him lying dead in the bathroom while holding electric wires that protruded from a socket.

Besides his body, there was a basin of water, bathing soap, and a sponge.

The issue was reported to Mzuzu Police Station, and the law enforcers visited the scene.

His body was taken to Mzuzu Central Hospital, where a postmortem revealed that cause of death was due to multiple organ failure secondary to electrocution.

Police are advising the public to call professionals to attend to any electrical faults to avoid similar incidents.

Mbizi hailed from Wayisunkhunya Mbizi Village, Traditional Authority Mthwalo in Mzimba District.

71-Year-Old Man Arrested in Mzimba for Possession of Elephant Ivory

Police in Jenda, Mzimba, have arrested a 71-year-old man for allegedly being in possession of elephant ivory and dealing in government trophies without a permit.

The suspect, identified as Tyson Nguluwe from Mgubani Ndhlovu Village under Traditional Authority M’mbelwa, was apprehended on September 23, 2025, at Mzoma near the Mqocha border.

According to Jenda Police Public Relations Officer Sub Inspector Macfarlen Mseteka, the arrest followed intelligence reports from wildlife officers that a man was offering raw ivory for sale at K70,000 per kilogram along the border area.

Acting on the tip-off, detectives from Jenda Police and wildlife officers mounted a roadblock on the Mqocha–Embangweni earth road. The joint operation led to the arrest of Nguluwe, who was found in possession of four pieces of raw ivory weighing 37.10 kilograms.

Police say the suspect failed to produce any documentation authorizing him to possess or trade in government trophies. He has since been charged with possession of a specimen of a listed species and dealing in government trophies without a permit, contrary to the Parks and Wildlife Act.

Nguluwe is expected to appear in court soon to answer the charges.

The Chief Elections Officer for the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), Andrew Mpesi, has commended government, security institutions, and various stakeholders for supporting the smooth running of the 2025 General Elections.

Speaking at the National Tally Centre in Lilongwe this evening in his welcome remarks, Mpesi says the Commission was able to carry out its operations without logistical challenges because funding is released on time, in line with the national budget approved by Parliament.

He also highlights the work of the Election Transport Task Force, which is mobilizing vehicles from government departments and parastatals to facilitate movement of election materials.

Mpesi has further praised the Malawi Defence Force, the Malawi Police Service, the Malawi Prison Service, and the Immigration Department for providing security throughout the process.

He has noted that district commissioners, chief executives, returning officers, and other staff have played a vital role in ensuring smooth coordination across all levels.

Prophet Shepherd Bushiri Congratulates President-Elect Mutharika

Self-proclaimed Prophet Shepherd Bushiri, founder and president of ECG – The Jesus Nation Church, has extended his heartfelt congratulations to President-elect Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika following his victory in the just-ended presidential elections.

In a statement released on behalf of his church and in his personal capacity, Bushiri described Mutharika’s triumph as a reflection of the trust Malawians have in his leadership and his continued commitment to service, unity, and development.

"This triumph is not only a reflection of the trust and confidence the people of Malawi have placed in your leadership, but also a testament to your steadfast commitment to service, unity, and national development,” Bushiri said.

The prophet further prayed for divine wisdom and strength for Mutharika as he assumes office again, urging him to steer the country into an era of inclusiveness, peace, and prosperity.

Bushiri also had a word of counsel for those expected to serve in Mutharika’s new administration.

"To all those who will have the grace to work alongside Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika in this new administration, I prophetically advise you: do all things possible to avoid the past mistakes which once cost the confidence of Malawians,” he cautioned.

He emphasized that the new mandate should be guarded with humility, diligence, and integrity, ensuring that accountability and faithfulness to the people remain at the center of governance.

Bushiri assured Mutharika that his church community would continue to support the new administration in prayer, believing that “when righteous leaders are supported by prayer and integrity, a nation is blessed.”

The message concluded with renewed blessings for both Mutharika and the people of Malawi.
