Msonda Criticizes DPP for Politicizing Chakwera’s Tanzania Visit

Ken Msonda, deputy spokesperson of the MCP, has condemned the DPP for politicizing the visit of the country’s former President, Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera.

Msonda stated that he is aware the party is using Tanzanian organizations to block Chakwera from leading peace talks in that country. He urged Malawians to avoid introducing politics into government work.

He added that young party members should respect former President Mutharika, who recognized the importance of the visit and offered his blessings.

According to Tanzanian authorities, Chakwera is not considered suitable to lead the talks, citing concerns over his past authoritarian tendencies.

Chakwera, however, confirmed that he was appointed by the Commonwealth to lead the peace discussions in Tanzania.

Government Orders Economy-Class Travel for Senior Officials

The government has mandated that all senior public officers at Grade C, including heads of statutory bodies and state-owned enterprises, must travel economy class.

The directive, issued by Chief Secretary Justin Saidi, strengthens 2025/26 expenditure controls. No exemptions are allowed, and all travel must comply with procurement and financial procedures, supported by original documentation for audit purposes. Breaches may result in administrative action.

The measures take effect immediately and cover the entire financial year. This follows earlier steps to manage the national budget, including freezing recruitment and promotions, halting high-value asset purchases, cutting fuel entitlements for ministers and senior officials by 30%, and tightening foreign travel controls.

Transport Minister Urges Faster Delivery of Road Projects

Minister of Transport and Public Works, Dr. Feston Kaupa, has called for faster implementation of national road projects to improve efficiency and ensure timely delivery of key infrastructure.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Lilongwe, Dr. Kaupa warned that delays, variations, and substandard work negatively affect government finances and disrupt the daily lives of Malawians who rely on road networks.

He acknowledged ongoing challenges, including fuel shortages, foreign currency constraints, and delayed payments, but reaffirmed government’s commitment to clearing bottlenecks and prioritising resources for strategic projects.

Roads Authority CEO Dr. Ammiel Champiti said the meeting provided a platform for contractors to share experiences and identify areas for improvement in delivering national road infrastructure.

Msaka, Makanjira Take Election Dispute to Supreme Court After Procedural Dismissal

Former Democratic Progressive Party legislator Bright Msaka and independent candidate MacDonald Makanjira have taken their battle over the Machinga Likwenu parliamentary seat to the Supreme Court, seeking to overturn a High Court ruling that affirmed Tulinje Muluzi’s election victory.

High Court Judge Justice Jack Nriva on 10 November 2025 dismissed their petition, citing the pair’s failure to follow legally prescribed procedures. The ruling effectively upheld Muluzi’s win in the 16 September parliamentary elections.

In their appeal, Msaka and Makanjira want the Supreme Court to nullify the High Court’s decision, reinstate their election petition (No. 67 of 2025), and permit all sworn statements from both sides to stand as evidence.

The Malawi Electoral Commission had declared Muluzi the winner with 6,027 votes, ahead of Msaka’s 3,935 votes, while Makanjira placed seventh with 1,551 votes.

Gendaball Brings New Hope for Rehabilitation at Rumphi Prison

Rumphi District has turned to Gendaball—one of Malawi’s newer homegrown sports—as a tool for rehabilitation, aiming to enhance inmates’ mental wellbeing while strengthening positive engagement with correctional staff at Rumphi Prison.

District sports officer Edmond Mandindi said the introduction of the sport is part of a broader effort to support inmates’ reintegration by reducing stress, promoting healthy routines, and encouraging constructive use of time. He added that, subject to available resources, the district council hopes to extend Gendaball to other public institutions, including Rumphi District Hospital.

Prison officer-in-charge Peter Nsini emphasized that beyond physical fitness, the game is helping to build discipline, teamwork, and healthier relationships between inmates and officers—key elements in a rehabilitative environment.

Northern Region Gendaball Coordinator Augustine Tembo welcomed the initiative but noted that limited resources continue to slow down the sport’s broader expansion across the region.

Created in 2013 by Malawian innovator Francis Mwalabu, Gendaball has been steadily growing, with active participation already recorded in parts of Mzuzu, Lilongwe, and Blantyre.

The purpose of the meeting was to strengthen the partnership between the Government of Malawi and UNDP and explore ways to enhance development collaboration.

The discussions focused on key national priorities outlined in the Malawi 2063 Agenda, including governance reforms, social protection, resilience building, and sustainable development.

She stressed that UNDP’s initiatives are designed to deliver measurable impact and foster long-term socio-economic transformation.

Vice President Ansah expressed gratitude for UNDP’s continued support, acknowledging the agency’s contribution to the country’s growth and development.

She emphasised that coordinated strategic cooperation between the government and development partners is critical to achieving Malawi’s national objectives.

Zulu Slams MEC Over Void Ballot Irregularities, Vows Legal Challenge

George Zulu, the Ntandile-Mtsiliza parliamentary candidate in the September 16, 2025 elections, has accused the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) of undermining electoral integrity after it declared Alfred Gangata the winner despite what he describes as glaring procedural breaches.

MEC earlier today announced that Gangata secured the seat with 12,369 votes, narrowly defeating Zulu, who garnered 12,360 votes.

But during the announcement, MEC Chairperson Justice Annabelle Mtalimanja admitted that the handling of void ballots fell short of legal requirements. She revealed that while the constituency returning officer had initially recorded 445 void ballots, MEC could only trace 386—leaving 59 ballots unaccounted for.

Zulu argues that MEC’s decision to proceed with declaring a winner under such circumstances violates Malawi’s electoral laws, particularly since the number of missing void ballots surpasses the nine-vote margin separating him from Gangata.

“With a margin of just nine votes and 59 void ballots missing, it is clear that these irregularities could have changed the outcome,” Zulu said.

A former MP for the same constituency, Zulu has vowed to pursue all available legal avenues, insisting the situation constitutes a profound miscarriage of justice.
