President Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika and First Lady Prof. Gertrude Mutharika have expressed profound sorrow following a tragic road accident that claimed the lives of five members of the Hive Band, who worked closely with Afro-dance artist Eli Njuchi.
In a condolence message, the Mutharikas described the loss as heartbreaking, noting that the deceased were not only gifted musicians but key contributors to Malawi’s music industry. The victims have been identified as Elivacy Matamando Muyaba, Wilfred Kupengule Jnr, Vincent Mkwinda, McFarlen Banda, and Raphael Chitsonga.
“These were not just musicians; they were instrumental figures whose passion and artistry helped shape the soul of Malawi’s music industry for years,” reads the statement.
The president said the tragedy has deeply affected the nation, Eli Njuchi, and the Musicians Association of Malawi, describing the incident as a devastating blow to Malawi’s cultural fabric. The musicians reportedly lost their lives while traveling to Lilongwe to perform at an end-of-year concert.
“The fact that they were on a journey to bring joy to others only deepens the pain of this loss,” the statement added.
As a gesture of national mourning and solidarity, Prof. Mutharika announced that the government will cover all funeral expenses, ensuring the fallen artists are laid to rest with dignity.
The Mutharikas extended their heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, friends, and the entire creative industry during what they described as a dark moment for the nation
