Agricultural expert Tamani Nkhono Mvula has called for stronger dialogue and clear agreements between the government and mega farmers to address challenges affecting mega farms in Malawi.

His call comes amid government plans to scale up the mega farm initiative through new model farms anchored on irrigation to increase agricultural production.

Mvula said the government and mega farmers needed to reach clear agreements before committing substantial resources to agricultural investments, which typically required significant capital, took time to generate returns and remained vulnerable to climate-related risks.

Mvula also called for the establishment of a clear implementation framework to guide the operations of mega farms.

He argued that the first phase lacked adequate structures to guide decision-making and address emerging challenges.

He further said agriculture remained a high-risk sector, with factors such as climate shocks potentially affecting farmers’ ability to meet their financial obligations.

Old Mutual Malawi has donated K105 million to Mzuzu University towards the renovation of its diagnostic laboratory.

The donation was made through the Old Mutual Blantyre Foundation Trust with the aim of improving the university's diagnostics and research capacity.

Speaking on the sidelines of a symbolic cheque presentation at the university’s boardroom, Tawonga Manda, Chairperson of the Old Mutual Blantyre Foundation Trust, said Old Mutual felt compelled to support the university.

"When they explained to us the impact that this diagnostic lab is going to have at the University and the surrounding community, we felt that they had a compelling proposition," said Manda.

Representing the Vice Chancellor, Dr. Aubrey Chaputula, the Mzuni Librarian, said the donation will help the University deliver on its mandate of providing quality education, research and training.

"As a University we have a program in Parasitology and Disease Vector Control so the refurbishment of the laboratory will ensure that the program runs smoothly because the students will have the required instruments," said Chaputula.

Dr. Chaputula also commended Old Mutual Malawi for being a trusted partner, citing its continued support of the university’s Mathematics Olympiad.

A presidential candidate for the National Organisation of Nurses and Midwives (NONM) who is also a Deputy Dean, Faculty of Health Sciences at Mzuzu University, Griffin Baxter Chirambo has pledged to lobby the government to address challenges facing nurses and midwives in the country, including unemployment, delayed promotions and low salaries.

Chirambo, who presented his nomination papers on 22 August 2026, at Ekwendeni says one of the key priorities will be pushing the government to recruit qualified nurses and midwives who have completed their training and hold valid practising licences.

According to Chirambo, this is necessary because the Ministry of Health continues to face a significant shortage of health workers, despite many trained nurses remaining unemployed.

Meanwhile, he has also promised to advocate for regular and timely promotions and better salaries for nurses and midwives, arguing that some health workers remain in the same positions for many years without career advancement.

Chirambo said health workers play a critical role in caring for people's lives and therefore deserve better remuneration that reflects the important services they provide.

The elections are scheduled for 27 November 2026.

Mzuzu University ICT and Cybersecurity expert Vision Thondoya has called for stronger cybersecurity preparedness among institutions following reported financial fraud involving the National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA).

Speaking to Mzuni FM, Thondoya said institutions should focus not only on technological protection but also on staff training and strong procedures for verifying communications and payment instructions.

He said cybercriminals can compromise email accounts or impersonate trusted individuals to manipulate organisations into making fraudulent payments.

“We should not equate cybersecurity with hacking, because a system can be technically secure, but if the organisation is still vulnerable to social engineering and fraud, then we have got big problems,” said Thondoya.

Thondoya has also urged businesses and members of the public to verify emails, links and payment instructions before taking action, while remaining alert to threats such as phishing and business email compromise.

His remarks come amid growing concerns over cybercrime and digital fraud in Malawi, affecting both individuals and organisations, including government institutions and parastatals.
