An agriculture expert in the country has commended the government for introducing favorable farm gate prices for the 2026/2027 farming season, saying the move will significantly benefit farmers.

Speaking in an interview with Litala FM, agricultural analyst Leonard Chimwanza said the newly announced prices present a valuable opportunity for farmers to earn better returns from their produce.
Chimwanza described the development as timely, especially considering the challenges farmers face during production, including the rising cost of farm inputs such as fertilizer, seeds, and chemicals.

“It is a welcome development. Farmers go through a lot to produce crops, and the increase in input prices has made it even more difficult. These farm gate prices will help ease the burden and improve their incomes,” he said.

While expressing appreciation to the government, Chimwanza also advised farmers to exercise caution in managing their harvests.

“I really appreciate the government for setting farm gate prices that will benefit farmers. However, as we celebrate this, farmers must ensure they keep enough food for household consumption and avoid selling everything. In addition, they should gradually consider investing more in cash crops to improve their economic status,” he added.

The government recently announced the official farm gate prices for the 2026/2027 agricultural season, a move aimed at protecting farmers from exploitation by vendors and ensuring fair returns for their produce.

The Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) has refuted reports circulating on social media claiming that President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika’s administration has asked First Vice President Jane Ansah to voluntarily resign from her position.

In a statement signed by Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Justin Saidi, the OPC described the claims as false and misleading, stressing that the government is not aware of any such development. The statement further clarified that the President is not involved in the alleged request.

The OPC emphasized that President Mutharika remains committed to delivering on his duties and that the circulating information is an attempt to tarnish the image of both the President and the Vice President.

Through the statement, Saidi assured Malawians that the government is functioning smoothly and that the Vice President continues to work in collaboration with the President of the Republic of Malawi.

The OPC also clarified that recent budgetary adjustments for the Office of the President are part of broader cost-saving measures being implemented across all ministries and departments under the current administration.

The statement concluded by urging Malawians to refrain from spreading unverified information, warning that such actions have the potential to undermine national unity.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has called on legal professionals in the country to play an active role in the environmental sector to ensure the country makes meaningful progress in protecting its natural resources.

UNDP Resident Representative for Malawi, Fenella Frost, said legal practitioners must collaborate with other stakeholders in implementing and strengthening policies that safeguard the environment. She emphasized that the legal profession has a critical role in ensuring environmental laws are effectively enforced.

Frost noted that while Malawi is experiencing growth in sectors such as mining, there is a need to balance development with environmental protection. She stressed that all necessary procedures must be followed to prevent environmental degradation, even as the country celebrates economic advancements.

She made the remarks in Mangochi during the Malawi Law Society Annual General Meeting (AGM), currently underway at Nkopola, where she is attending as guest of honour.

Meanwhile, Malawi Law Society President, Davies Mthakati Njobvu, urged legal professionals to promote climate justice, emphasizing that economic interests should not overshadow environmental protection.

This year’s AGM is being held under the theme: “Environmental Justice and Human Rights: Unpacking the Role of the Legal Profession in Promoting Climate Justice.”

The Malawi Red Cross Society has intensified its response to assist people affected by floods in various districts across the country, as heavy rains continue to cause widespread damage.

Speaking to Litala FM, Public Relations Officer for the Malawi Red Cross Society, Felix Washon, said the organisation is working hand in hand with government structures, including local councils, to provide immediate humanitarian support to affected communities.

Washon said the assistance includes distribution of basic relief items such as food and essential household supplies, ensuring that affected families receive starter packs to help them cope with the situation.

“As the Red Cross, we first conduct assessments to establish the extent of the damage and identify the type of assistance required. We are currently on the ground supporting those affected by the floods,” said Washon.

Meanwhile, a statement from the Department of Disaster Management Affairs under the Office of the President and Cabinet indicates that a total of 9,598 households have been affected.

The statement further reports that 13 people have died, while 35 others have sustained injuries due to the floods. Evacuation camps have since been established across six district councils to accommodate displaced families.

The Malawi National Spelling Bee has received financial and moral support from Old Mutual Investment Group ahead of a trip to Harare, Zimbabwe, where the team will compete in the Africa Spelling Bee competition.

Speaking during a send-off ceremony held at Amaryllis Hotel in Blantyre, Head of Operations for Old Mutual Investment Group, Brenda Fachi Mwale, expressed confidence in the team’s ability to perform well and bring the trophy home.

Mwale said the young participants have the potential to excel, urging them to remain confident and aim to become champions during the competition.

“As Old Mutual, we support the education sector to complement the Government of Malawi’s efforts in achieving the Malawi 2063 agenda, which places education at the center of national development,” she said.

Commenting on the development, Director of Operations for the Malawi National Spelling Bee, Andrew Chikho, said the competition provides a valuable platform for students to interact with peers from across Africa, learn different cultures, and showcase Malawi’s rich cultural heritage.

He added that such international events help to broaden students’ knowledge and exposure beyond the classroom.

A total of six students are expected to travel to Zimbabwe on Wednesday to represent Malawi in the continental competition.

The Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) has encouraged students in Malawi to develop a strong understanding of how the economy works and to avoid engaging in corruption.

Speaking during the launch of Global Money Week at Zingwangwa Secondary School in Blantyre, RBM Deputy Governor for Operations, Kisu Simwaka, said students must be equipped with financial knowledge while still in school if the country is to achieve meaningful economic progress.

Simwaka explained that educating young people about money and financial management has the potential to shape future leaders who can help develop the country’s economy.

“Our nation needs leaders who understand how the economy works and who can take steps to build and strengthen it. We also need leaders who will avoid corruption throughout the process of developing the country,” said Simwaka.

South West Education Division (SWED) Education Division Manager, Feggie Mphasi Mwale, commended RBM for supporting the education sector with various materials, including books on financial literacy.

She also warned students to stay away from corrupt practices such as cheating during examinations, saying such behaviour contributes to high levels of corruption in different sectors when students eventually join the workforce.

This year’s Global Money Week is being observed under the theme “Smart Money Talks.”

The National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE) Public Trust has called on political candidates and their supporters to uphold peace as Blantyre West Constituency prepares for a parliamentary by-election on 17 March 2026.

The call was made on Thursday during loud hailing rallies in the constituency, aimed at motivating residents to turn out in large numbers on election day.

Blantyre District Programmes Officer Glory Maulidi emphasized that maintaining peace is the responsibility of all, including those whose preferred candidates may not win. She further urged the constituents to respect the democratic process and ensure a safe environment throughout the election period.

“Elections always produce winners and losers. It is crucial that everyone, including those who do not win, maintains peace at all times,” Maulidi said.

The 17 March by-election, contested by ten candidates—seven independents and three representing political parties, namely the DPP, PPM, and AFORD, follows the postponement of the 16 September 2025 parliamentary race, following the death of one of the contestants during election preparations.
