God speaks to His people through dreams, visions, and signs, providing guidance and revealing His plans. However, misunderstanding these messages can lead to missed seasons, delayed purposes, or even disobedience to His will. Scripture offers several examples of individuals who misunderstood God’s communication, nearly missing their destiny, and serves as a reminder to approach divine messages with humility and discernment.
Peter’s experience in Acts 10 highlights this. God gave him a vision of unclean animals and instructed him to eat, but Peter resisted, interpreting it through his Jewish traditions. Only through the guidance of the Holy Spirit did Peter understand the vision was about God’s plan to include Gentiles in His kingdom. This moment underscores the importance of seeking divine clarification.
When God speaks, we must act intentionally to align with His purpose:
Seek clarification from God. Divine messages often require God’s explanation. Like Daniel, who sought God’s wisdom to interpret Nebuchadnezzar’s dream (Daniel 2), take dreams and visions back to Him in prayer. Trust His timing to reveal their meaning.
Maintain an unbroken relationship with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is our guide, helping us discern truth amid life’s uncertainties. Peter only understood his vision because he was open to the Spirit’s leading (John 16:13). Stay connected through prayer, worship, and obedience. Seek godly counsel. God uses spiritually mature believers to provide clarity. Samuel needed Eli’s guidance to recognize God’s voice (1 Samuel 3). Surround yourself with wise, godly counsel to help interpret and align with His will. Flee from sin. Sin distorts spiritual perception and separates us from God. Joshua, the high priest, stood accused before God in filthy garments, representing sin. Yet God’s grace cleansed and restored him (Zechariah 3). Repentance and holiness are essential to staying aligned with God’s purposes.
