ESCOM, MISA Launch Award to Combat Electricity Infrastructure Vandalism

LILONGWE, Malawi — The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi Limited and MISA Malawi Chapter launched a media award Wednesday to combat infrastructure vandalism through investigative journalism, writes Winston Mwale.

The ESCOM Anti-Vandalism Award will recognize exceptional reporting on electricity infrastructure vandalism across three categories: print, electronic and online media. Winners in each category will receive K1 million.

The award opens Nov. 1, 2025, and will consider stories published or broadcast between Nov. 1, 2025, and April 30, 2026.

Winners will be announced at the annual MISA Malawi Media Awards ceremony in May 2026.

Pilirani Phiri, chief public relations and communications officer for ESCOM, said vandalism extends beyond commercial losses.

"Vandalism of ESCOM infrastructure is not just a commercial challenge for us; it is a direct attack on Malawi's future, causing blackouts that stall economic activity and disrupt critical services," Phiri said.

Golden Matonga, chairperson of the Media Institute of Southern Africa Malawi Chapter, said the partnership recognizes media's role in public accountability.

"The ESCOM Anti-Vandalism Award is a well-thought-out program that recognizes the media's indispensable role in public sensitization and accountability," Matonga said.

The initiative aims to elevate reporting standards on how infrastructure vandalism affects national development and public safety.

ESCOM and MISA Malawi encouraged journalists and media houses to investigate and report on the causes, effects and solutions surrounding infrastructure vandalism.

Man Arrested for Trafficking Illegal Immigrants in Mzimba

Mzimba, Malawi--Police at Jenda in Mzimba have arrested Boniface Mwandosya on suspicion of trafficking six Ethiopian illegal immigrants in August this year, writes Victoria Yande.

The arrest, which took place on October 14, 2025, follows weeks of investigations after Mwandosya fled the scene when police intercepted his vehicle carrying the six immigrants around Jenda.

According to Jenda Police Spokesperson, Macfarlane Mseteka, the incident occurred in August when Mwandosya was driving a Mitsubishi Pajero registration number LA7841 from Mzuzu toward Lilongwe.

“When he reached a police checkpoint set up by Jenda officers, Mwandosya tried to turn back to avoid inspection,” Mseteka explained.

“Officers reacted swiftly and fired at one of the rear tires, forcing the vehicle to stop.”

During the commotion, Mwandosya abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot, leaving behind six Ethiopian nationals who were immediately apprehended. Investigations later revealed that the immigrants had entered Malawi illegally through the Songwe border, using uncharted routes, with Mwandosya’s assistance.

He had been on the run since August until his arrest in Lilongwe, where he was reportedly hiding.

Mwandosya, who hails from Mwandosya Village, Traditional Authority Kyungu in Karonga District, faces charges of trafficking in illegal immigrants, aiding unlawful entry, and resisting arrest.

Police say he will appear in court once all paperwork is finalized.

Residents Demand Justice for Arrested Siblings in Area 23 Malisero

Lilongwe, Malawi – Residents of Puzani Village, also known as Area 23 Tank Malisero under Traditional Authority Tsabango, are calling for justice after four siblings were arrested in connection with the death of a thief who broke into their home in the early hours of today, writes Esther Banda

The siblings – Rajab, Maxwell, Chisomo, and Mambo – reportedly rushed to help their grandmother after she was attacked and strangled by the intruder around 2 a.m.

Eyewitnesses say the siblings managed to apprehend the thief and intended to hand him over to the nearby Area 23 Tank Police Station.

However, near Ebenezer Secondary School, close to Malisero Mosque, the thief was allegedly stoned to death by kabaza operators.

Following the incident, police arrested the four siblings, accusing them of involvement in the killing.

The arrests sparked outrage among residents, who questioned why the siblings were detained despite their intention to deliver the suspect to the authorities and not participate in the mob attack.

The siblings have since been transferred to Kawale Police Station amid claims of insufficient investigation.

In protest, angry residents gathered at the home of Chief Puzani, urging him to intervene and address concerns over persistent theft, unresolved murder cases, and alleged police corruption at Area 23 Tank Police Station.

Chief Puzani is currently away but has assured residents over the phone that he will return soon.
