UNIVERSITY OF MALAWI STUDENT DIES

The University of Malawi is mourning the loss of one of its students, Brazio Kambalame, who passed away on Friday, June 27, 2025.He was pursuing a Diploma in Law (DIP/LAW/40/23).

According to an official announcement from Eluby Kafumbata (Mrs), Assistant Registrar (Students Welfare), Kambalame died in the evening hours of yesterday at Ntcheu District Hospital.

An alarming number of University of Malawi students have lost their lives recently, raising concerns within the UNIMA community .

The plan to seek a court injunction has been suspended after the release of examination results for students whose grades were disputed due to a balance clearing issue in their respective portals, bringing temporary relief to affected students.

"Yes, it is true, the plan to seek an injunction has been suspended. The University has responded positively", says Mr. Harry Chiwoza, the President of UNIMA Law Society, one of the organizers of the initial plan.

Meanwhile, Chiwoza has noted that there is still one student who has not yet been helped, and the matter has been reported to the responsible authorities.

The concerned group wanted an injunction refusing the University of Malawi administration from continuing to administer the supplementary exams until their results were released.

"We refused to stand and watch implementation of policies that do not reflect economic realities of many students. The delayed tuition clearance was not deliberate and in our view could not warrant denial of access to end of year results", he added.

Speaking to Colonels Media, Christopher Mwagomba, a second-year Actuarial Science student who was affected, expressed relief, saying the resolution has brought him peace of mind and taught him a valuable lesson about timely portal balance clearance.

The University of Malawi Wildlife and Environmental Society (UNIMAWES) has joined the global community in commemorating World Environment Day, calling on all citizens to take an active role in environmental conservation.

This year’s observance is being held under the theme "Beat Thin Plastic Pollution", highlighting the environmental dangers posed by single-use plastics.

The Society's announcement, made through its Vice Secretary Mr. Innocent Kachotsa, emphasizes that thin plastics continue to threaten ecosystems, pollute water bodies, and harm wildlife. In response, it is encouraging the public to take impactful steps to ease further harm such as saying no to single-use plastics, opting for reusable alternatives, and supporting waste separation and recycling efforts.

In his comment, the UNIMAWES President Mr. Robert Kamwendo has encouraged intellectuals to act, live an environmentally sustainable life as the world is ours. He added that the effects from damaging the environment are uneven and everyone has to put that into remembrance.

"The effects of environmental degradation do not consider financial status, they affect everyone", he warned.

Attached is a photo of UNIMAWES Patron Mr. Vitumbiko Chijere Chirwa with messages on fighting against thin plastics.

UNIMA EDUCATION STUDENTS QUESTION TUITION MEMO

Education students from the University of Malawi are expressing mixed reactions after receiving feedback from university officials regarding TP tuition fees

In a memo released through the Office of the Registrar, it was stated that outgoing fourth-year Education students will not be required to pay tuition fees during their teaching practice.

However, the president of the Education Students Association, Funika Deborah Kabinda, described the memo as “highly condensed” and said it concealed important information that does not align with the students’ expectations.

“They just want to divide and dismantle us so that we don’t become unified,” she said.

The students have been holding vigils, matching from official's offices on campus to the administration office in a show of solidarity and demand for transparency.

Kabinda added that, she would provide further comments on the matter after a meeting scheduled for this evening.
