A group of concerned students silently headed to the Zomba ESCOM Offices to hand in a petition regarding prolonged blackouts that have engulfed Chikanda since the opening of the semester.

The step was taken to address the potential consequences of the blackouts if not quickly rectified.

"The current situation has created a very difficult learning environment, and we fear it may negatively impact our academic performance if left unresolved," reads part of the petition.

In response, ESCOM Faults Supervisor Mr. W. Simwaka acknowledged a transformer issue in the Chikanda-Sewage area, citing high demand as a contributing factor. He assured the students that maintenance has been directed to address the issue.

However, Mr. Simwaka couldn't provide a specific timeline for rectification but promised temporary fixes in meantime.

The group had earlier planned to meet with the Manager, but he was unavailable upon their arrival.

Speaking to Colonels Media, group leader Mr. Charley Kachere expressed disappointment with the "casual answers" provided, warning that if the issue isn't resolved within seven days, they will take a different approach.

Excitement is expected to reach to the climax this afternoon as final year students at the University of Malawi take to the streets of Chikanda and Campuses to hold their Finale Victory Dance.

The traditional annual ceremony brings together final year students from all programme for a moment of dance, in honour and in celebration of achieving a milestone of staying and schooling at UNIMA campus from 2022 to 2025.

The parade, spiced up by Dj Sparks on the deck and drum masters is expected to be begin at Matiya and parade through Chikanda to campus premises before recochating at Zomba zero then back at the sports complex.

One of the organizers of the dance, Macdonald Mkandawire, pointed out that the Organising Committee faced lack of enough funds which forced the organizers to resort on door to door service throughout the Chikanda and campus students' residing places.

However, he highlighted that although this has been the case people should expect an ever-happened event.

"We expect highest turn out ever in the history of finale victory dance at University of Malawi", he said.

Preparations for this year's finale Victory dance is facing a significant financial hitch as organisers say they have collected MK681, 000 out of the required 1.1Million Kwacha

The Parade's organizing treasurer Boniface Mapiko Chinyama however believes that the parade will proceed as planned despite facing a financial deficit

He was speaking to Colonels Media this morning where he also said as the committe they are planning to collect funds today in campus through one on one.

Said Chinyama, "the preparations are just okay. The Committee is trying its best to give everyone the experience that shall be cherished. It’s just unfortunate that people aren’t contributing as we expected."

He added that the committee planned to parade up to Ekhaya Food Shop but they won't proceed with the plan due to budgetary constraints

This year's victory dance parade , a celebration marking final-year students' milestone scheduled for September 5, will start from Matiya Primary School and will proceed along the main bridge through campus premises till Chancellor College Junction at Zero, uptown.

Alfred joined Colonels Media in 2021 as a reporter and rose through ranks to become a senior reporter and official host of Colonels Media Exclusive Interviews

In 2021, Alfred was appointed Director of Finance and later left that role to become the Director of Quality Control. He then left Colonels Media and joined the Students Representative Council as a Liason Officer.

When his time was due, he returned to the Media and continued as Talk Show Host at the Media

He exits the University of Malawi having served as President of other Organisations such as French Society, Chanco Travelling Theatre and The Writers Workshop.

Colonels Media is delighted to have such a person of unwavering weight, whose skill and potential blossomed to this comprehensive CV. We congratulate you, Alfred Inka Kamwendo for bagging your first degree in Bachelor of Arts Humanities with special interest in French and Drama with Credit.

Congratulation to our former Senior Reporter Stella Mwakitalo.

She graduates today at the University of Malawi with Bachelor of Arts Media for Development

Stella joined Colonels Media in 2022 and has been a great addition. She has been adaptable and versatile with her cutting edge reporting that was impatial and objective.

Her Study focused on the representation of women and their participation in politics and economy through the womanity program on zodiak . She found that the program is a significant tool to promoting women empowerment mostly in economic spheres but issue's of inclunsivity and accessibility needs to be improved.

Colonels Media stands proud to have witnessed such a top notch professional and we wish her the very best in the new world
