How does mineral composition change during apple development—and why does it matter for fruit quality? 🍎

A new study in Acta Agrícola y Pecuaria analyzed the mineral content in peel and pulp of Golden Glory apples across key developmental stages. Results showed that calcium decreased over time, while potassium and magnesium followed inverse trends. Notably, the peel consistently accumulated higher mineral concentrations than the pulp.

🔍 Why this matters:
✔ Links mineral dynamics with fruit quality and disorders
✔ Highlights the importance of tissue-specific analysis
✔ Supports improved nutrient management strategies
✔ Provides insights for better orchard decision-making

How do you control flowering in pineapple without affecting fruit quality? 🍍

New research from Acta Agrícola y Pecuaria shows that CPA can significantly inhibit natural flowering in pineapple, with strong differences between cultivars. While MD2 reached up to 77.8% inhibition, Smooth Cayenne maintained higher yields.
Importantly, fruit quality remained unchanged.

🔍 Why this matters:
✔ Improves flowering management
✔ Maintains fruit quality
✔ Supports precision agronomy in tropical crops

📢 New publication | Plant Pathology

Acta Agrícola y Pecuaria has published a new research article reporting the first occurrence of Fusarium graminearum causing leaf blight and wilt in sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) in Guerrero, Mexico.

Sesame is an economically important oilseed crop in tropical and subtropical regions, with Mexico cultivating around 70,000 hectares annually. Guerrero stands out as one of the main producing states, making the emergence of new diseases a potential threat to regional production and crop sustainability.
In 2023, symptoms of leaf blight and wilt were detected in experimental sesame plots in Guerrero. Affected plants showed small dark leaf spots that progressively expanded, leading to severe blight, defoliation, and eventual wilting. The causal agent was isolated and subjected to pathogenicity tests, successfully reproducing symptoms and fulfilling Koch’s postulates.
The pathogen was identified through a combination of morphological characterization and phylogenetic analyses based on partial sequences of TEF1, actin, and β-tubulin genes. Results consistently placed the isolate within the Fusarium graminearum clade with strong statistical support.
This study constitutes the first formal report of F. graminearum associated with leaf blight and wilt in sesame in Guerrero, Mexico, highlighting the need for monitoring and management strategies to mitigate its potential impact on sesame production systems.

🔍 Why this matters:
✔ Reports the first occurrence of Fusarium graminearum affecting sesame in Mexico
✔ Expands the known host range and epidemiological relevance of this pathogen
✔ Confirms pathogen identity through morphological and molecular approaches
✔ Alerts producers and researchers to a potential emerging threat in sesame production

📢 New publication | Natural antifungal alternatives for safer livestock feed

Acta Agrícola y Pecuaria has published a new research article evaluating the in vitro efficacy of plant extracts against Fusarium species isolated from forage maize grains used for silage.

Contamination by Fusarium species in Zea mays represents a significant risk for livestock production, not only due to yield losses but also because of the potential presence of mycotoxins that threaten animal health and feed safety. Developing sustainable alternatives to chemical fungicides is therefore a key priority in modern agriculture.
This study assessed the antifungal activity of plant-based extracts, including mustard, governor, cinnamon, and citrus, against strains of Fusarium oxysporum, Fusarium verticillioides, and Fusarium chlamydosporum isolated from maize grains. The results highlighted mustard extract as the most effective treatment, achieving over 91% mycelial inhibition and 85% spore control at relatively low concentrations (250 ppm). Notably, governor extract showed an exceptional efficacy of 99.99% against F. chlamydosporum.
Although cinnamon and citrus extracts also demonstrated antifungal activity, their effectiveness required considerably higher concentrations. The inhibitory effects are associated with bioactive compounds such as cinnamaldehyde and flavonoids, which disrupt fungal cellular integrity.
These findings support the potential use of plant extracts as sustainable, natural alternatives to synthetic fungicides, contributing to reduced economic losses and minimizing mycotoxin risks in livestock feed systems.

🔍 Why this matters:
✔ Identifies effective plant-based extracts against key Fusarium species affecting forage maize
✔ Highlights mustard and governor extracts as promising low-dose antifungal options
✔ Contributes to safer silage production and reduced mycotoxin contamination risks
✔ Supports the transition toward sustainable and environmentally friendly crop protection strategies

📢 New publication | Agricultural economics & coffee production systems

Acta Agrícola y Pecuaria has published a new research article comparing the economic performance of organic and conventional coffee production systems in Veracruz, Mexico.
Organic coffee is typically marketed at higher prices than conventional coffee; however, organic production systems often experience lower yields. This raises an important question for producers and policymakers: is the price premium sufficient to compensate for the reduced productivity of organic systems?
This study analyzed the economics of both production systems through six case studies based on interviews with representative coffee producers from Veracruz, Mexico. Several financial indicators were evaluated to compare profitability and investment performance between organic and conventional coffee production.
The results indicate that both systems generate similar profitability per unit of investment. In particular, the modified internal rate of return averaged 12% for organic coffee and 13% for conventional production. Although organic systems did not receive additional economic incentives for their environmental and human health benefits, they remain a viable production option for small-scale farmers, as they require lower initial investment and allow the incorporation of family labor.
These findings contribute to the discussion on the economic sustainability of coffee production systems and provide insights for producers considering transitions between conventional and organic management.

🔍 Why this matters:
✔ Provides evidence-based comparison of organic and conventional coffee production economics
✔ Highlights the financial viability of organic coffee systems for smallholder farmers
✔ Contributes to discussions on sustainable and economically resilient coffee production

📢 New publication | Pest risk modeling & coffee protection

Acta Agrícola y Pecuaria has published a new research article analyzing the risk of establishment of the coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei, in the southern region of the State of Mexico using agroclimatic and phenological variables.

The coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei, is one of the most destructive pests affecting coffee production worldwide and represents a growing threat in emerging coffee-growing regions of central Mexico. Anticipating its establishment and spread is essential for improving pest monitoring and implementing timely phytosanitary strategies.
This study developed a predictive model of pest incidence by integrating climatic, topographic, and crop phenology variables. Field data on infestation levels, microclimate, and coffee phenology were collected from production plots in three municipalities of southern State of Mexico.
Using principal component analysis, statistical testing, and machine learning approaches, including neural networks optimized through genetic programming, the researchers identified key drivers of infestation risk. The results showed that relative humidity, fruit maturity, and slope explained a substantial proportion of the variation in coffee berry borer infestation.
These findings provide a scientific basis for developing early warning systems that can strengthen monitoring programs and support more efficient pest management strategies in expanding coffee production areas.

🔍 Why this matters:
✔ Identifies key agroclimatic and phenological factors associated with coffee berry borer infestation
✔ Demonstrates the value of machine learning for agricultural pest risk modeling
✔ Supports the development of early warning systems for improved phytosanitary management in coffee-growing regions
