Liberia’s Presidential Press Office Responds to U.S. Human Rights Report on Journalist Accreditation

The Office of the Presidential Press Secretary has acknowledged the U.S. Department of State’s observations in its 2024 Human Rights Report concerning journalist accreditation procedures at the Executive Mansion.

In a statement, Press Secretary Kula Fofana — whose name was mentioned in the report — explained that the guidelines, introduced in June 2024, are designed to enhance professionalism, ensure safety, and maintain accountability. The new policy requires police clearance, business registration, and tax clearance for both journalists and media organizations.

Fofana noted that similar measures exist in other democracies, including the United States, where journalists undergo background checks before gaining access to the White House. She stressed that the policy is intended to balance the constitutional right to a free press with the security needs of the Presidency.

According to the Press Secretary, the Executive Mansion continues to provide access to a diverse range of media outlets without discrimination based on editorial stance and has facilitated press coverage of presidential activities nationwide.

The statement also indicated that the Executive Mansion posts announcements and advertisements from international partners and civil society on its website only after they appear in multiple Liberian newspapers — a step aimed at promoting local media sustainability.

The government, the release concluded, remains open to refining the accreditation process through dialogue with stakeholders to ensure transparency and inclusivity in keeping with Liberia’s democratic principles.

Eviction Looms for CDC Headquarters as Court Upholds Ruling

MONROVIA – Court sheriffs are expected to enforce an eviction order in the coming days, removing the opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) from its headquarters in Congo Town.

The move follows a recent decision by Civil Law Court Judge George Smith, who denied CDC’s request to block the eviction. His ruling reinforces a 2016 Supreme Court verdict that favored the Stubblefield Estate, the rightful owner of the property.

In May 2025, the Supreme Court dismissed CDC’s legal challenge as “preposterous,” fined its lawyers $500 for misuse of the court system, and declared that CDC was a tenant—not the owner. The Court cited rent payments totaling $360,000 between 2018 and 2023 as clear proof of a rental agreement.

According to Liberian law, tenants cannot question their landlord’s ownership. After years of delays and political obstruction, the Stubblefield Estate resumed enforcement efforts in 2024.

Although CDC’s lawyers say they will appeal, legal analysts believe the party has few remaining options.
