Two teenagers from Southern Baja California just became the youngest students ever to win Mexico's National Youth Water Prize—and now they're heading to Stockholm to compete on the world stage.

Omar Quijano and Mikaela Benitez, both 15, beat out 490 projects nationwide with OleoCatch, their clever solution for capturing chronic oil micro-spills in marinas using palm fiber and human hair. The kind of slow leaks most people never notice but that quietly damage marine habitats.

They're competing for the People's Choice Award and need votes from the community. Every vote supports young science, local innovation, and the ecosystems we all depend on.

Dragged your hand through warm seawater at night and seen it spark blue? You've met bioluminescence—microscopic algae reacting to movement. A UABCS student has mapped the prime viewing times and conditions for catching the phenomenon here in Baja California Sur. El Saltito on La Paz Bay is the spot, best from June through December when the moon is down and the tide is low. Bonus: the same glowing chemistry is now helping scientists track tumors and monitor contaminants in water. If you haven't seen it, time a trip around the new moon—worth it.
