Unlike standard cars with pistons that move up and down, a rotary engine uses triangular rotors that spin in a continuous circle. Because there is no reciprocating motion—meaning parts don’t have to stop and change direction—the engine can reach incredibly high RPMs. This constant, fluid rotation creates a seamless flow of exhaust gases, resulting in that iconic, unrelenting wail. The 787B is a four-rotor masterpiece, essentially doubling the complexity of a standard rotary. In a traditional engine, you hear the distinct “pops” of individual cylinders firing, but the 787B fires so rapidly that the sounds merge into one continuous note. This efficiency helped it become the only rotary-powered car to ever win the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It proved that unconventional geometry could outperform traditional piston engineering under the most brutal racing conditions.
