My name is Ade Solorzano, and I am from México. I have been working in the maritime industry for three years as an Officer of the Watch and Ship Security Officer (SSO). My journey at sea has taught me resilience, leadership, and the importance of believing in my abilities.
As an Officer of the Watch and SSO, I am responsible for ensuring the safe navigation of the vessel, maintaining navigational watches, passage planning, monitoring navigation equipment, and complying with international maritime regulations. I also oversee the ship's security plan, conduct security drills, and help maintain a safe environment for both the crew and the vessel. Every day requires teamwork, situational awareness, and a strong commitment to safety.
What I enjoy most about my profession is that no two days are ever the same. Every voyage brings new challenges, new places, and new people. I love combining technical knowledge, decision-making, and continuous learning while experiencing different cultures and incredible waters around the world.
One of my biggest challenges has been adapting to an international working environment where English is the primary language. Early in my career, I also experienced gender bias and had to prove my abilities more than once. Those experiences taught me that competence, preparation, and consistency speak louder than stereotypes.
I advocate for equal opportunities based on competence rather than assumptions. Women deserve equal access to training, promotions, and leadership positions in workplaces built on respect, inclusion, and safety.
To women starting out in this industry, believe in your abilities before asking others to believe in them. Stay curious, keep learning, and never stop investing in your professional development. Confidence comes from preparation, and perseverance will take you further than talent alone.
The sea has taught me much more than navigation. Every challenge has shaped both the officer and the person I continue to become. If my story inspires even one young woman to believe she belongs at sea, then every obstacle has been worth it.
