Bamenda City Council Holds 2nd Ordinary Session for Midway Evaluation of 2025 Financial Year

Report: Wirngo Peter Tardzenyuy

The Bamenda City Council held its 2nd Ordinary Session for the midway evaluation of the 2025 financial year on August 22, 2025, at the council's auditorium. The session was attended by city councilors, the Senior Divisional Officer for Mezam, Moo Simon Emile, and other dignitaries.

The Bamenda City Council Mayor, Achobong Tembeng Paul, delivered the opening address, highlighting the council's progress in project ex*****on. According to the Mayor, the level of project ex*****on in the city is above 80%, with some projects yet to be counted due to delays in the arrival of heavy-duty equipment.

The Mayor outlined some of the projects completed by the council, including over 7 kilometers of double surface dressing, gutters, drains, and a dam. The council is also fast-tracking the Burnt Down Bamenda City Banking Project. However, the Mayor cited liquidity challenges as a major obstacle, attributing it to the crisis zone and the reluctance of residents to pay taxes and rents.

Regarding the Bamenda Municipal Stadium, Mayor Achobong Tembeng Paul revealed that the council had written an official letter to FECAFOOT requesting rehabilitation, but there has been no response. The council is now seeking compensation from FECAFOOT for lost revenue due to the non usage of the stadium leaving it under deteriorating situation, requesting 100 million FCFA per month. The council has expressed willingness to take over the management of the stadium and undertake rehabilitation efforts.

"This issue was raised in the previous meeting wherein a deliberation was passed that I should write an official letter to the President General of FECAFOOT, requesting him to solicit the stadium for rehabilitation, and since then to date, they have not done anything," the Mayor stated.

The Mayor also announced plans to develop a modern playground for children, featuring football, basketball, volleyball, and handball facilities. The council's decision comes amidst a broader discussion about the relationship between FECAFOOT and local authorities in Cameroon.

The Senior Divisional Officer for Mezam, Moo Simon Emile, supervised the session, which included deliberations, committee reports, and adoptions. The councilors discussed various challenges and opportunities for growth and development in the city.

Cameroon's 2025 Election Hinges on Article 118

A petition challenging President Paul Biya's eligibility for the 2025 presidential election has brought Article 118 of the 2012 Electoral Code into the spotlight. This clause could potentially decide the fate of the election.

Article 118 stipulates that individuals are ineligible for election if they have placed themselves in a situation of dependence or collusion with another person, organization, or foreign power. This provision aims to safeguard the independence of the presidency and ensure the officeholder can exercise power without undue influence.

Opposition figure Akere Muna has invoked Article 118, arguing that President Biya's advanced age and increasing absence from public life render him dependent on aides and foreign medical treatment, making him unfit to run. If the Constitutional Council agrees, Biya could be barred from the election.

If the petition is upheld, Biya's party would have three days to nominate a replacement candidate. However, if the Council rejects the petition, Biya's candidacy would stand, and he would continue his pursuit of another term.

Article 118 represents both a safeguard and a test of Cameroon's democratic maturity. Its enforcement depends on the Constitutional Council's willingness to apply it impartially in a highly charged political environment. As the petition works its way through the system, Article 118 has become a focal point of public debate, with many Cameroonians watching closely to see whether it will remain a theoretical safeguard or become a decisive instrument in shaping the country's political future.

Presidential Candidate Akere Muna Challenges President Biya's Eligibility

Report: Wirngo Peter Tardzenyuy

In a significant development ahead of the October 12, 2025, presidential election, candidate Akere Muna has petitioned the Constitutional Council, seeking a declaration of ineligibility for incumbent President Paul Biya to run for another term. The petition, filed in accordance with Article 118 of the Electoral Law, has sparked discussions about the interpretation of the Electoral Code and its implications for the upcoming election.

The petition cites specific provisions of the Electoral Code, including Law No. 2012/001 of April 19, 2012, as amended and supplemented by Law No. 2012/017 of December 21, 2012, and Law No. 2019/005 of April 25, 2019. Akere Muna's legal team argues that these laws render President Biya ineligible for the presidential race.

The petition has elicited varied reactions from the public and political analysts. Some view it as a strategic move to challenge the status quo and promote electoral reform, while others question its potential impact given the current political landscape.

The Constitutional Council will review the petition and make a determination on President Biya's eligibility. The outcome will likely have significant implications for the presidential election and the country's political future.

Akere Muna's petition has brought attention to the importance of adhering to the Electoral Code and ensuring the legitimacy of the electoral process, and the Constitutional Council's decision will be eagerly awaited by Cameroonians and international observers alike, as it will determine the fate of President Biya's candidacy and potentially shape the country's future political landscape.

Catholic Bishops Meet with Presidency Ahead of October Election, Stress Peace and Unity

Report: Wirngo Peter

A delegation of some members from the Permanent Council of the Episcopal Conference of Cameroon (CENC) met with Ferdinand Ngoh Ngoh, Minister of State and Secretary General of the Presidency, on Wednesday, August 13, 2025. The meeting aimed to promote peace, unity, and stability in the country as the October 12 presidential election approaches.

The bishops emphasized their commitment to working with the government to ensure a peaceful electoral process. Archbishop Andrew Nkea, President of the CENC, clarified that the Church's stance remains non-partisan, focusing on promoting justice, reconciliation, and peace in the nation and the world. "Our message is simple that the church... will continue to be at the service of Justice, reconciliation and peace in our nation and the world," he stated.

The Minister of State thanked the Bishops on behalf of the Head of State and reaffirmed the Central role played by Bishops in their various Dioceses in promoting peace and social cohesion among their faithful. He called on political parties to reject all forms of hate speech but prioritize peace.

The meeting's timing has sparked debate about the role of religious authorities in Cameroon's electoral landscape. While some observers interpret such visits as tacit political support, others argue they are part of the Church’s broader engagement with national institutions.

Fons Visit the Fon of Fons: North West Fons Pledge Support to President Paul Biya Ahead of October 12 Elections

Report: Wirngo Peter

In a show of solidarity, a delegation of North West Fons paid a courtesy visit to Minister of State and Secretary General at the Presidency of the Republic of Cameroon, NGOH NGOH Ferdinand, to reiterate their support for President Paul Biya's candidacy in the upcoming October 12 elections.

The delegation, led by one of the prominent Fons from the North West Region, conveyed a message of support to President Biya, hailing him as the "Fon of Fons". The leader of the delegation stated, "He is the Fon of Fons and we have come to reiterate our support for his candidacy, this is our message." The Minister received the message from the North West Fons, further solidifying their allegiance to the President.

This display of support comes amidst reports of some prominent North West Fons boycotting this event at the Unity Palace where many of their colleagues gathered to validate President Biya's bid for another seven-year term. The Fons of Bafut (HRM Abumbi II), Nso (HRM Sehm Mbinglo I), and Kom (HRM Ndzi II) were notably absent from the event, sparking speculation about their reasons for staying away.

While the reasons behind their absence remain publicly unknown, many subjects have praised these monarchs for their perceived 'refusal' to publicly accompany the Biya regime's bid to prolong its 42-year rule. However, others have blasted traditional rulers for their perceived loss of dignity.

Despite the controversy surrounding the event, the delegation of North West Fons that met with Minister NGOH NGOH Ferdinand reaffirmed their support for President Biya's candidacy. This show of support highlights the complex dynamics at play in Cameroon's traditional leadership and their relationship with the government.

As the country prepares for the October 12 elections, the support of traditional leaders like the Fons will undoubtedly play a significant role in shaping the outcome.

Reform Overcomers Chapel Bamenda Graduates First Batch of Pastors

Report: Wirngo Peter Tardzenyuy

The Reform Overcomers Chapel Bamenda celebrated a momentous occasion on August 10, 2025, with the graduation of its first batch of pastors for the Christ mission. The ceremony was attended by prominent religious leaders, including General Overseer Rev. Enoch Festus Kedju, Regional Overseer Rev. Achobomg Tembeng Paul, and Bible School Principal Rev. Mekom Samuel Taleh.

The graduating students underwent an intensive three-month training program, which included courses on the Holy Spirit, financial prosperity, success, business strategy, answered prayers, and praise and worship. Rev. Mekom Samuel Taleh expressed pride in the students' progress, noting that they are now equipped to preach the gospel and spread the good news of Jesus Christ.

"We made sure they drilled with the curriculum of the institution," Rev. Mekom Samuel Taleh said. "I think some of the courses they went through, they studied the Holy Spirit, the principle of financial prosperity, the principle of success, the bigger business strategy. They studied the principle of answered prayers... They studied several courses, praise and worship, which are just the courses for which once you go through these courses, you arrive to graduate from the school."

Rev. Achobomg Tembeng Paul shared a powerful message with the graduating clergymen and women, drawing inspiration from the biblical story of Saul's conversion to Paul after encountering Jesus Christ. "We want to hear from you what is expected of these students that have finished three months of intensive training," he said. "Yes, they have been rebranded. They are all children from Bamenda. And they have been rebranded, first to start with, to their community. And they should be the authors of a good life, a good community."

The graduating students shared their experiences and newfound understanding of the Bible. Andre Tene, Headboy of the Graduating Students, emphasized the importance of hard work and faith in building a nation. "Our teacher taught us that not only prayer can build a nation, but work also builds a nation," he said. "We learned many things that help us in the future, by faith, spirit, and humankind."

Bih Marie, Best Graduating Student, expressed gratitude for the positive impact of the training on her life. "I want to tell my colleagues that are out there and that are in the community, that you can go to church and pray and God will give you everything that you want," she said. "But I want to tell you that there is something deeper than that. I have a different view, a different vision."

Tema Njong Diana, Graduating Student, shared her plan to impact her community by teaching them about the Holy Spirit and the Bible. "I learned about the dynamics of the congregation, I learned about the Holy Spirit, and I also learned about finances to work, and how I intend to impact my community, firstly by telling them the ways of the Holy Spirit, and making sure that they pray along with them together on a daily basis," she said.

Sofa Mi Ji Yvette, Graduating Student, highlighted the importance of morality, discipline, and love in her future ministry. "A pastor school is not like any other school," she said. "It's a school that teaches morality and discipline. For me, we are disciples of Christ. What I will preach in the world, the take out message I will give to the world, is to copy our example. I preach love, and preach love so I will like other people to enroll in this school, so that the society will not be a chaos one, so impact our society with love."

Ndisso Taoyang Pierre, Graduating Student from the North, testified that his life has changed since becoming a Christian. "I came to Bamenda, my life has changed since I have just been became a Christian," he said. "And since I gave my life to Christ, I have to serve Him as I should. I have to reach the objective that He called me to."

The Regional Overseer, Rev. Achobomg Tembeng Paul, urged the graduating pastors to vote for President Paul Biya in the upcoming October 12, 2025, election, citing the president's potential to bring development to the country. "We have told them to vote constructively, peacefully, and develop our town and our country fully," he said.

The community is now looking forward to the impact these newly graduated pastors will have on their lives and the lives of those around them. As Rev. Achobomg Tembeng Paul aptly put it, "The products of what I've been putting in their mind will be seen in the community."

Waste Management Nightmare in Njengang Quarter, Bamenda

By Wirngo Peter Tardzenyuy

A fast-growing residential area in Bamenda III Subdivision has been turned into a dumping ground, posing serious health risks to residents, students, and pupils of nearby schools. The Njengang Quarter, home to a Government Primary School, Youth Center, and Secondary school, has been plagued by this environmental hazard for three years.

According to residents, the land was excavated and turned into a dump site without warning. "We got up one morning and discovered that this place was being excavated. And we thought it was a project because it's government land," said Amos Mbuh Shingwa, a resident of over 15 years.

The dump site has become a breeding ground for harmful insects, lizards, frogs, and rats. The stench from the waste is overwhelming, and the polluted water from the site is contaminating the soil and nearby streams. "The challenges, my family have been frequently sick. The air from here causes cough, causes flies to invade...and anything you want to put in your mouth, the fly will first settle very fast on it," said a denizen living close to the dumping ground.

The community leader, Ngecha Telemacus, has raised the alarm several times, but to no avail. "What is happening here now is very, very unheard of for any living community. The population here is not safe. Children are there every day. People leave from Mile 5 and other areas with trucks , vehicles and wheel barrows to dump their waste here. The main access routes are blocked...Look at the insecurity that surrounds Bamenda now," he said.

Bright Light Projects (BLP), a civil society organization, has stepped in to sensitize the community on waste management. "We are empowering the communities to understand that even the waste that they generate, they should be able to sort them to facilitate the work of the various stakeholders that are involved," said Shing Praise Wandia, Program Manager of BLP.

The City Councilor for Njengang Quarter, Nfoncho Robert, expressed surprise at the situation and promised need action. "This is really a surprise, this is really hazardous to the population of this community...The responsibility of the city council is to make sure that the town is clean," he said. According to him the city council has contracted EMPIRE company to be responsible for managing all the waste in the city of Bamenda.

The community is calling for immediate action to address this environmental crisis. As Shing Praise Wandia aptly put it, "If we want a sustainable society, then this waste should not be here. But if we want to live in a primitive society, then it means that we should keep doing what we are doing." The people of Njengang Quarter deserve better.
