Report: Wirngo Peter Tardzenyuy
The Bamenda City Council held its 2nd Ordinary Session for the midway evaluation of the 2025 financial year on August 22, 2025, at the council's auditorium. The session was attended by city councilors, the Senior Divisional Officer for Mezam, Moo Simon Emile, and other dignitaries.
The Bamenda City Council Mayor, Achobong Tembeng Paul, delivered the opening address, highlighting the council's progress in project ex*****on. According to the Mayor, the level of project ex*****on in the city is above 80%, with some projects yet to be counted due to delays in the arrival of heavy-duty equipment.
The Mayor outlined some of the projects completed by the council, including over 7 kilometers of double surface dressing, gutters, drains, and a dam. The council is also fast-tracking the Burnt Down Bamenda City Banking Project. However, the Mayor cited liquidity challenges as a major obstacle, attributing it to the crisis zone and the reluctance of residents to pay taxes and rents.
Regarding the Bamenda Municipal Stadium, Mayor Achobong Tembeng Paul revealed that the council had written an official letter to FECAFOOT requesting rehabilitation, but there has been no response. The council is now seeking compensation from FECAFOOT for lost revenue due to the non usage of the stadium leaving it under deteriorating situation, requesting 100 million FCFA per month. The council has expressed willingness to take over the management of the stadium and undertake rehabilitation efforts.
"This issue was raised in the previous meeting wherein a deliberation was passed that I should write an official letter to the President General of FECAFOOT, requesting him to solicit the stadium for rehabilitation, and since then to date, they have not done anything," the Mayor stated.
The Mayor also announced plans to develop a modern playground for children, featuring football, basketball, volleyball, and handball facilities. The council's decision comes amidst a broader discussion about the relationship between FECAFOOT and local authorities in Cameroon.
The Senior Divisional Officer for Mezam, Moo Simon Emile, supervised the session, which included deliberations, committee reports, and adoptions. The councilors discussed various challenges and opportunities for growth and development in the city.
