🔧 **Finding a GOOD Mechanic in Mexico — This is What It Looks Like** 🇲🇽
I shot this video yesterday at one of my all-time favorite mechanics here in Puerto Vallarta — **Tapas**, a transmission and hydraulic power steering *specialist*. And I want to talk about something I think a lot of expats and visitors get wrong when looking for a mechanic here.
**A busy mechanic is a GOOD mechanic.** 🙌
Think of it like a taco stand with no line. That's not where you want to eat, right? Same rule applies. If nobody's there… ask yourself why.
Tapas is *always* busy — and his shop shows it. 👀 We're talking **wall-to-wall transmissions and power steering pumps**. Old ones, rebuilt ones, cores waiting to go to the scrap yard. Oil on the floor. Barely enough room to squeeze past the vehicle. It is *not* a pretty place. It is not clean. It is gloriously, authentically **a mechanic's shop** — and every single piece of that chaos represents a job he's done. That's his résumé stacked floor to ceiling. 💪
Here's how it works with him 👇
🕘 Show up around **8:45–8:50 AM** — he opens at 9. He chats with everyone waiting, does a quick **drive-in-the-car diagnostic**, and then schedules you for a return date. Transmission rebuilds can run **2–3 weeks out** — I once waited **six weeks**. Worth every single day.
⚙️ The other thing I want to stress: **use specialist mechanics.** Don't take your transmission to a general mechanic. Don't take your electrical issues to a transmission shop. Find the person who does *that one thing* all day, every day. That's who you want working on your vehicle.
Share your experience with mechanics and others and how it differs from back home, in the comments below.
