🔧 **Finding a GOOD Mechanic in Mexico — This is What It Looks Like** 🇲🇽

I shot this video yesterday at one of my all-time favorite mechanics here in Puerto Vallarta — **Tapas**, a transmission and hydraulic power steering *specialist*. And I want to talk about something I think a lot of expats and visitors get wrong when looking for a mechanic here.

**A busy mechanic is a GOOD mechanic.** 🙌

Think of it like a taco stand with no line. That's not where you want to eat, right? Same rule applies. If nobody's there… ask yourself why.

Tapas is *always* busy — and his shop shows it. 👀 We're talking **wall-to-wall transmissions and power steering pumps**. Old ones, rebuilt ones, cores waiting to go to the scrap yard. Oil on the floor. Barely enough room to squeeze past the vehicle. It is *not* a pretty place. It is not clean. It is gloriously, authentically **a mechanic's shop** — and every single piece of that chaos represents a job he's done. That's his résumé stacked floor to ceiling. 💪

Here's how it works with him 👇

🕘 Show up around **8:45–8:50 AM** — he opens at 9. He chats with everyone waiting, does a quick **drive-in-the-car diagnostic**, and then schedules you for a return date. Transmission rebuilds can run **2–3 weeks out** — I once waited **six weeks**. Worth every single day.

⚙️ The other thing I want to stress: **use specialist mechanics.** Don't take your transmission to a general mechanic. Don't take your electrical issues to a transmission shop. Find the person who does *that one thing* all day, every day. That's who you want working on your vehicle.

Share your experience with mechanics and others and how it differs from back home, in the comments below.

His location is below — save it. 📍

🟢 Learn about **Ángeles Verdes — Mexico's Free Roadside (Green) Angels! 🚐✨**

Something I forgot to mention in my video — here in Puerto Vallarta we actually have **three trucks based right here**, running **8am to 8pm**! Their coverage from PV stretches north to **La Penita**, east toward **Mascota**, and south down to roughly **El Tuito** (and a bit beyond). 🗺️

So what exactly do they do? A LOT, actually! 👇

🔧 **Mechanical help** — up to **1 hour of labor, FREE**. If your radiator hose blew, a belt snapped, or you've got a flat — they'll fix it on the spot. *Parts aren't covered* (you pay for those), but the hands and the tools are on them.

⛽ **Gas & oil** — they carry it. You pay for what you use, but they've got it.

🚑 **First aid** — trained in CPR and basic emergency response. Accidents happen; they're prepared.

🏆 **Zero charge for service** — this is a federally funded program run by Mexico's Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR). It's been operating since **1960**! A tip is always appreciated though 🙏

📍 **They patrol federal highways and toll roads** — if you break down, pull over, pop your hood, and they'll find you on their route!

📞 **How to reach them:**
• Call **078** from any Mexican cell or landline
• Or dial **911** (works better from cell phones)
• Or use the official **Ángeles Verdes app** — it uses your GPS to pinpoint your location, lets you describe the problem, and sends real-time updates on when help is arriving 📲

🌎 And yes — this isn't just a PV thing. Most states throughout Mexico have coverage on their federal highways. Whether you're a tourist, expat, or local, **this service is for everyone, regardless of nationality**.

👇 Have you ever been helped by the Green Angels? Drop your experience in the comments — good stories help fellow travelers know what to expect! 🙌

📌 **A quick note from me personally** — if this kind of local, practical info is useful to you, please take 2 seconds and **👍 Like & ➕ Follow this page!** My previous page with 13,000 followers was taken down back in February during the algorithm chaos surrounding the fires here in the Banderas Bay area. Starting over from scratch, and every follow genuinely helps. 🙏

And while I have you — if you or someone you know needs help with **vehicle registration, plate changes, ownership transfers, driver's licenses, or importing a vehicle into Mexico**, that's exactly what we do at **Pat's Plates PV**! 🚗🇲🇽 We serve Americans, Canadians, expats, and tourists throughout Jalisco. Send us a message and we'll point you in the right direction! 😊

*(A note on the 01-800 number that circulates online — current best practice is **078** or **911** from a cell. The old toll-free format changed with Mexico's telecom updates.)*

🔥 **What's New Coming to Cinco de Diciembre? Or Where's my Chicken?** 🔥

We filmed this right in front of **Ley grocery store** in the historic **Cinco de Diciembre** neighborhood — and the transformation here is striking. Where the **Oxxo** once stood after burning in the February fires — along with the **t-shirt shop** next door and the beloved **El Pechugon** rotisserie chicken place on the corner? All three spaces have been completely razed. Just a flat dirt lot now.

And yes — we know. **El Pechugon.** 😭 The taquitos. The potatoes. The smell of rotisserie chicken that hit you from half a block away. You all have been asking about that place more than anything else on this corner, and honestly... same. It's a real loss for the neighborhood. 🐓❤️

But here's where it gets interesting... 👀

We walked around to the back side and panned across the interior — you can clearly see **white chalk outlines marking future footings** already laid out on the ground. The pattern looks relatively modest in scale, but that's what we thought about a lot of projects that became high-rises here too. 🏗️

So what do YOU think is going in here?
👉 A replacement Oxxo or small commercial strip?
👉 Another mid-rise or high-rise — like what we're starting to see pop up all over this neighborhood?
👉 Something completely different?

Drop your guess in the comments! 👇

---

🌊 **And while we're talking about this stretch of the neighborhood...**

At the crossing of **Avenida México and Calle Uruguay** — straight down toward **Los Mangos Beach Club** — there's a proposal on the table for a **second muelle (pier) for Puerto Vallarta.** PV already has one. Do we need another one here, in this location? What would that mean for the beach, the neighborhood, the vibe?

💬 Tell us what you think! We want to hear from locals, expats, and visitors alike. This neighborhood is changing fast — the conversation matters.

Did you hear about the NEW, NEW Malecón construction?! It's happening down by the north end of the bridge and will extend the malecón out over the water. What do you think? More malecón= 👍 Or leave it alone?

Have you ever driven a Volkswagen bug? I just remember it being one of the funnest vehicles to drive down a gravel road. Slow and predictable. I drove it from Portland down to southern Oregon for a paperwork requirement for college. It would go 35 miles an hour up the mountain passes and 70 miles an hour down, LOL. Share your experiences in the comments!

And don't forget to update your plates if they're expired! Helping Bill here switch out his 20+ year old plates on his Volkswagen Bug.

Today, we were driving down the road and we saw somebody with the pre-2022 Nayarit plates getting towed. We've heard from other people and clients. The reason they reach out to us is because they've been threatened as well. Feel free to check in if you're not sure if you have expired plates or not.

🚶‍♂️ **The new Malecón extension is looking GOOD!** 🌊

I took a walk down the newly extended boardwalk all the way to the park — and as you can see in the video, this section is basically done! 🙌

There's still some construction happening past the Rosita, but it's coming along. For now it's **pedestrian only** — and honestly? It's a vibe. 😎

One thing worth noting: there are no car blockers at the start of the new pedestrian zone like there are at the original Malecón section, so it's a little unclear what the long-term plan is — limited vehicle access? Fully car-free? No word yet.

**What do YOU think? Would you prefer it stay pedestrian only, or would limited car access make sense?** 👇 Drop your thoughts in the comments — I want to know what the community wants!

🌮⭐ Puerto Vallarta just made history!

Pancho's Takos on Basilio Badillo has officially been recognized by the **Michelin Guide Mexico 2026** — and honestly, it couldn't happen to a more deserving PV institution. Over 20 years of keeping it real with authentic Jalisco flavors. That's not luck, that's craft. Huge congratulations to the whole Pancho's Takos team! 👏🎉

For those of us who've been priced out by the line rather than the bill… you know who you are 😅 — Puerto Vallarta's taco scene is genuinely world-class up and down the board, and this recognition shines a light on ALL of it.

💬 **So tell us — what's YOUR five-star taco spot in the Vallarta area?** Drop your go-to in the comments. Let's build the ultimate local list! 👇🌮
