You See a Window, A Bird Sees a Path Forward

Birds typically crash into windows either due to seeing reflections of clear skies or vegetation, or because they see appealing potted plants on the other side. According to a 2014 study published by BioOne, between 365 million and 988 million birds die annually in collisions with buildings in the United States.

I would commend this book to anybody who is truly interested in bird conservation. It is an amazing story of Luis E. Morales and his journey from a marine biologist to becoming one of Mexico's foremost bird conservationists. Wings chronicles the hardships and enlightenments that he experienced arriving at his chosen advocation and passion--birding and bird conservation. The book also conveys the values that birds and birding play in our overall health. Finally, it ends with what we, as birders, can do to connect with nature and the importance of implementing nature-based solutions to enhance birding opportunities in our communities. I have had the pleasure of volunteering at the San Pancho Bird Observatory that Luis founded. He is an amazing bird guide and his leadership has resulted in many important changes that support bird conservation in San Pancho and the rest of western Mexico. I have a much greater appreciation for the sacrifices he made and his strong conservation ethic and commitment having read this wonderful book.

SILENT WALK

In the second chapter of the BOOK Wings: Bird Conservation as a Life Mission I share how birds gave me wings to begin my own flight.

Some of the most important turning points in our lives don’t arrive with certainty, they arrive in silence.

Years ago, my wife and I were walking through a difficult moment. We had been carrying frustration, uncertainty, and many unanswered questions about our future. That day we walked together in silence through nature, each one lost in our own thoughts.

Then suddenly, the forest came alive: a bird of prey crossed in front of us, and within seconds the trees filled with movement and sound. Alarm calls everywhere. Wings moving through the canopy. Life unfolding with an intensity impossible to ignore.

In that exact moment, something awakened inside me: what began as fascination soon became purpose.

Birds didn’t just reconnect me with nature, they gave me direction when I needed it most, they gave me perspective and most importantly, birds gave me hope.

And eventually, birds gave me wings to begin my own flight.

That moment became part of the story behind WINGS: Bird Conservation as a Life Mission—a journey about finding purpose through nature and discovering that sometimes the answers we are looking for arrive when we stop trying to control everything and simply listen.

Have you ever had a moment in nature that changed the direction of your life?

I’d love to hear your story in the comments.

Natural Fascination (Chapter 1 of BOOK Wings: Bird Conservation as a Life Mission

One moment in nature can completely change the direction of your life.

“When I was a teenager, I saw a coral reef for the first time.
I couldn’t even swim well… but that moment changed my life forever.
Suddenly, I knew I needed to learn EVERYTHING about nature.
Years later, that path unexpectedly led me to birds.
Sometimes, your mission in life begins with a single moment of fascination.”

What moment in nature changed YOUR life?
