🚗🔋 A weak battery doesn't always fail from one moment to another. In many cases, it begins to show signs such as slow starting, dim lights or frequent need to switch current. It is also important to distinguish a dead battery from a problem in the alternator or electrical connections.

🔴 Difficult to start: when the battery loses capacity, the voltage can drop too much during the start and the starter motor rotates at lower speed. A negative cable with high strength can also produce a similar voltage drop. Code P0562 may appear due to low system voltage, although a deteriorating battery on its own does not necessarily generate a DTC.

🟠 Lights Weaken: A low-charge battery can cause headlights and indoor lighting to lose intensity, especially in slow motion or with several electrical consumers on. An alternator that is not delivering adequate voltage can also cause this symptom. P0562 can relate to low voltage and P2503 to a charging system voltage problem, depending on the vehicle.

🔵 Fast charging: if the battery loses charge shortly after being charged, there may be internal deterioration, reduced capacity or a problem in the charging system. An alternator that fails to recharge properly can constantly leave the battery undercharging, while a parasitic consumption can discharge it with the vehicle off. P0562, P2503 or P2504 may appear in some load monitoring systems, although parasitic consumption usually requires an electrical test to confirm it.

🔵 The starter sounds slow: when the battery can't deliver enough starter current, the starter motor spins slower and a "heavy starter" sound can be heard. Negative cable and battery connections also need to be checked because high resistance can limit current even with a battery in good condition. P0562 may appear at low voltage, but confirmation requires measuring the battery under charge.

⚫Turn on battery light: this light generally indicates a problem in the charging system and not necessarily the battery is the cause. A low-output alternator, a problematic belt, poor connections, or a faulty charging circuit can prevent the battery from receiving adequate charge. Depending on the vehicle P0562, P0563, P2503, P2504 or other codes related to the charging system may appear.

🔵 Bridge needed: if the car starts only after receiving external current, the battery may be down or have lost storage capacity. However, you also need to check why it was downloaded: an alternator not charging properly, parasitic consumption or poor connections can cause the same symptom. In some systems P0562 or codes related to the voltage and charge system may appear.

To correctly diagnose a battery you need to measure the voltage at rest, check how much it drops during the startup and perform a capacity test or CCA. Afterwards it is advisable to check alternator charging voltage and check terminals, positive cable and engine soil to rule out voltage drop. It is not advisable to change the battery without first determining if it is really losing capacity or if there is an external problem that is discharging it.

Does your car show slow start, dim lights or do you need to power it frequently? Tell me what symptom you have and I'll tell you what test I would do first. Follow Project Mechanical Expedition for more technical content.

🚗🔧 When a car loses power, the symptom can show up in different ways: during acceleration, when climbing a hill, under load, or even alongside a Check Engine light. Identifying when it happens helps determine which system to inspect.

🔴 Loss of power: A contaminated MAF sensor or one sending an incorrect signal can cause the ECU to miscalculate airflow. A severely clogged air filter restricts intake airflow, and a dirty throttle body or one that opens inconsistently can affect engine response. MAF-related codes may include P0101, P0102, or P0103; throttle body codes depend on the system used.

🟠 Struggles uphill: A worn fuel pump may not deliver enough fuel when engine demand increases. A restricted fuel filter further limits the supply, and a faulty regulator can cause fuel pressure to fall outside specifications. Vehicles that monitor fuel pressure may display P0087 for excessively low fuel pressure or P0191 for a fuel pressure sensor range/performance issue.

🔵 Jerks during acceleration: Worn or fouled spark plugs can cause misfires as engine load increases. An ignition coil producing a weak spark can also cause misfires, while injectors with uneven flow or poor spray patterns can disrupt combustion. Common codes include P0300 for random misfires and P0301–P0308 for specific cylinders, depending on the engine.

🟢 Feels sluggish: A partially clogged catalytic converter can increase exhaust backpressure and limit the engine’s ability to expel exhaust gases. An O2 sensor sending an incorrect signal can affect fuel corrections, and an exhaust system problem can increase restriction. P0420 or P0430 may indicate a catalyst efficiency issue, although these codes alone do not confirm a physical blockage.

🟣 RPM rises without a corresponding increase in speed: When engine RPM increases but vehicle speed does not rise proportionally, there may be slippage in the drivetrain. In a manual transmission, a worn clutch can slip. In an automatic, the torque converter or the transmission itself may experience slippage. Possible codes include P0730 for an incorrect gear ratio or P0741/P0744 related to torque converter clutch operation, depending on the vehicle.

🔵 Check Engine light comes on: An inaccurate MAF reading can affect air and fuel calculations, a faulty O2 sensor can affect mixture corrections, and an incorrect ECT reading can change the engine’s operating strategy. Depending on the fault, codes may include P0101–P0103, P0130–P0135, or P0115–P0118, among other related codes.

Properly diagnosing a loss of power requires identifying the conditions in which it occurs and checking MAF readings, fuel trims, fuel pressure, misfire data, and engine temperature. If RPM rises without a proportional increase in vehicle speed, possible clutch or transmission slippage should also be checked before replacing sensors.

Does your car lose power during acceleration or when climbing a hill, or does the RPM rise without an increase in speed? Tell me which symptom you’re experiencing in the comments, and I’ll tell you what to check first. Follow Proyecto Expedición Mecánica for more technical content.

🔥 A Smoke Producing Engine black is usually working with a mixture that is too rich, that is, too much fuel is getting in or not enough air is getting in to burn it properly. The cause may be in the air gauge, engine temperature, injectors or fuel system pressure.

🔴 Injectors Deliver Too Much: Injectors that leak, stay open longer than required, or present a deficient spray pattern can inject too much fuel into the cylinders. Excess does not completely burn out and can come out of the exhaust like smoke black Ignition failures may also appear. P0200 codes and P0201-P0208 codes can be related to the injector circuit, depending on the cylinder and the vehicle.

🟠 MAF reading incorrectly: A contaminated MAF sensor or with an out-of-range signal can cause the ECU to incorrectly calculate the amount of air that is entering the engine and misadjust the fuel. A troubled throttle body can also alter air intake and engine response. P0100, P0101, P0102, P0103 or P0104 may appear depending on the failure and the system.

🔵 Obstructed Air Filter: An overly saturated filter restricts air flow into the engine. By entering less air than necessary, the mixture can enrich and favor the appearance of dark smoke, especially under acceleration. A MAF can also record a different airflow than expected. Depending on the vehicle, MAF-related codes, such as P0101 or P0102, may appear, although a self-obstructed filter usually does not generate a specific DTC.

🔵 The engine looks cold: an ECT sensor indicating a temperature below real can cause the ECU to maintain fuel enrichment longer than necessary. A thermostat that keeps the engine running below its normal temperature can also prolong enrichment strategies. An O2 sensor failing to regulate correctly can affect fuel corrections. P0115-P0118 for the ECT, P0128 may appear when the engine does not reach the expected temperature and various P0130-P0135 codes related to the O2 sensor, depending on the application.

⚫ Too high fuel pressure: a pressure higher than specified can increase the amount of fuel delivered by the injectors and enrich the mixture. A faulty pressure regulator can prevent the system from maintaining the correct value, whereas the fuel rail must be checked to confirm the actual pressure. Codes such as P0191 and others related to the range or performance of the fuel pressure may appear in vehicles with a pressure sensor.

To correctly diagnose black smoke, you must first check if there is really a rich mixture condition. It is advisable to check fuel corrections, MAF reading, ECT temperature, fuel pressure and injector operation, as well as inspect air filter and sensor signals. It is not advisable to replace a sensor just because a code appears; first you have to confirm what is causing the excess fuel or the lack of air.

Does your car produce black mainly when accelerating, starting or all the time? Comment when it shows up and I'll tell you what to check first. Follow Project Mechanical Expedition for more technical content.

🚗🔌 Bad soil can cause electrical faults that are hard to identify because the affected part is not necessarily damaged. A ground connection with high resistance, corrosion, a deteriorated cable or a loose fixing point can cause voltage drops and intermittency.

🔴 Difficult to start: a poor connection between the negative battery and the engine can cause a significant voltage drop during the startup. The starter motor needs a low resistance return route to receive current correctly. If the negative cable or engine soil is sulphated, loose or deteriorated, the start can be slow. An excessive voltage drop in the earth circuit can be confirmed with a low-load voltage test; a specific OBD-II code is not always shown.

🟠 Lights Flashing: Poor body soil or negative high-strength cable can cause voltage variations in electrical circuits. If also the alternator is functioning irregularly, the power supply may fluctuate and become visible in headlights, dashboard or interior lighting. Codes related to the charging system, such as P0562 for low voltage or P0563 for high voltage, depending on the vehicle.

🔵 Suddenly Shutting Down: A defective ground engine or ECU/PCM can cause a momentary interruption of the power supply or electrical references necessary to keep the engine management system running. A damaged ground wire or corroded connection point can create an intermittent failure that is difficult to reproduce. Depending on the vehicle low voltage codes, communication loss, or multiple secondary codes caused by a power failure may appear, but there is no universal DTC for bad soil.

🔵 Several sensors fail: many sensors depend on a stable ground reference. If the ground ECU/PCM or ground wiring exhibits high resistance, several signals can divert simultaneously and cause seemingly inconsistent readings. This can generate multiple sensor codes that are actually being affected by the same electrical issue. Codes like P0101, P0121, P0130, P0115 or others may appear, but you must check the lands first before replacing several sensors.

⚫ Slow Start: In addition to the starter motor, the negative cable and engine soil are critical to complete the high current circuit. A rusty or weak connection can generate a voltage drop that causes the starter motor to spin slower than normal. A drop voltage test between the engine block and the negative of the battery during startup allows to check for excessive resistance on the dirt track.

🔵 The voltage is unstable: a bad body soil or a deteriorating negative cable can alter the electrical reference of the charging system and generate unstable readings. The alternator should also be checked because a fault in the regulation system itself can result in voltage fluctuations. Depending on the vehicle P0562, P0563 or codes related to the charging system may appear, but first you need to measure the actual voltage and check the connections.

To correctly diagnose a bad soil, the most important thing is not only to measure continuity with the multimeter, but to perform a voltage drop test with the working circuit. It is advisable to check negative battery, ground between engine and body, ECU/PCM ground points and alternator and starter motor connections. A visually good-looking connection can present enough resistance to cause a failure under load.

Does your car experience multiple electrical faults at the same time, start slowly or lights blinking? Tell me what symptom you have and I'll tell you which point of land I'd check first. Follow Project Mechanical Expedition for more technical content.

😳 car starts but won't start? this fuse could be the cause

The ignition fuse protects one or more electrical circuits related to ignition and engine management. When opened by excessive current, certain components may run out of power and the engine may start without starting.

Depending on the vehicle, this circuit can power systems such as the ECU, coils, injectors or other control components. Therefore, a failure in this fuse can cause a failure to start or several electrical systems related to the engine fail.

But an engine that runs and doesn't start doesn't automatically mean the ignition fuse is burned out. There may also be problems with fuel, spark, sensors, relays, wiring, soil or computer power.

To diagnose it correctly, first you need to identify the corresponding fuse and check its continuity and voltage on both sides. It's also important to check which circuit is protected and determine why it was opened before replacing.

Related OBD-II codes may vary by vehicle. Some systems can record feed codes for modules, ignition circuits, or communication when there is a loss of voltage, but a self-burnt fuse does not always generate specific code. Diagnosis should be complemented by electrical tests.

Never install a higher amperage fuse. Exactly the value specified by the manufacturer must be used.

🛢️ THE 15 MOTORS THAT CONSUME THE MOST OIL

Not all engines consume the same amount of oil between gears. High consumption may appear due to wear and tear in rings, guides and valve seals, problems in the carter ventilation system, external leaks or particular engine design characteristics.

Also, just because an engine has a reputation for consuming oil doesn't mean that all units present the problem. The year, generation, mileage, maintenance and conditions of use can completely change behavior.

1. VOLKSWAGEN 2.0 TFSI EA888 DE PRIMERAS GENERACIONES
Some of the first generations of this engine were known to present high oil consumption. In some cases, the cause was related to the piston rings and the ventilation system of the carter.

2. AUDI 2.0 TFSI
Some applications of the first 2.0 TFSI may present significant oil consumption. A compression and ventilation system check helps determine the cause.

3. BMW N63 V8
Its high thermal load and complexity can favor considerable oil consumption when there is wear and tear, ventilation problems or poor maintenance.

4. BMW N54 3.0 TURBO
Wear and high temperatures can contribute to oil consumption in units with high mileage or poor maintenance.

5. SUBARU EJ25
Some versions and generations of the EJ25 may present oil consumption related to internal wear, leaks or issues in the rings and seals.

6. TOYOTA 2AZ-FE 2.4
Certain applications of this engine were associated with high oil consumption, especially when there is wear and tear or problems related to the piston rings.

7. GM 2.4 ECOTEC
Some versions may present oil consumption due to problems related to piston rings and internal deposits.

8. MAZDA 2.3 DISI TURBO
The combination of turbocharging, temperature and high pressure can favor oil consumption when there are sealing or maintenance issues.

9. FORD 5.4 TRITON V8
Oil consumption, leaks and carter ventilation problems may appear in units with high wear.

10. HYUNDAI 2.0 TURBO THETA
Certain applications can develop oil consumption as a result of internal wear and tear or deposits in engine components.

11. HYUNDAI 2.4 THETA
Some units have presented high oil consumption, especially with high mileage and internal component wear.

12. MINI 1.6 TURBO
The engine used in certain generations can develop oil consumption due to problems in ventilation, seals, turbo or internal wear.

13. AUDI 4.2 FSI V8
Its direct injection design and high operating temperature can favor oil consumption when wear and tear or ventilation problems exist.

14. BMW N42/N46 4 CILINDROS
Some high-mileage units may present high consumption due to primarily wear and tear of valve seals and other internal components.

15. NISSAN QR25DE
Depending on generation and application, some units may develop wear-related oil consumption, poor maintenance, or sealing issues.

🔧 IMPORTANT: consuming oil does not automatically mean that an engine is about to fail. The worrisome is when consumption increases rapidly, blue smoke appears, leaks exist, spark plugs become contaminated or the level constantly drops.

If your engine is losing oil, you need to first determine whether it's really burning it or if there's an external leak. Checking compression, carter vent system, spark plugs, turbo when applied, and possible leaks can help find the source.

Never wait for the oil pressure witness to turn on to check the level. Too low level can cause serious engine damage.

¿Tu auto consume aceite entre cambios? 🛢️🔧
