A new study reveals that sugar intake may pose a greater risk to heart health than cholesterol levels. Researchers found that diets high in added sugars contribute more significantly to heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular complications than previously believed.

Excess sugar promotes inflammation, raises triglycerides, and increases insulin resistance, all factors that strain the heart and blood vessels. While cholesterol has long been considered the primary culprit in heart disease, these findings suggest that cutting back on sugary drinks, snacks, and processed foods could have a more immediate and profound impact on cardiovascular health.

Experts advise focusing on balanced nutrition: prioritising whole foods, fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins while limiting added sugars. Small changes like swapping soda for water, reducing sweets, and reading labels carefully can make a huge difference in protecting your heart over time.

This research challenges conventional wisdom and underscores the importance of moderating sugar consumption as a key strategy for long-term heart health.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. This leads to high blood sugar levels, which can cause serious health issues if not managed properly. Unlike type 2 diabetes, lifestyle choices don't play a role in causing type 1 diabetes. It's most commonly diagnosed in children and young adults, but it can develop at any age.

The symptoms of type 1 diabetes can appear suddenly and may include increased thirst, frequent urination, blurred vision, tiredness, and unexplained weight loss. A severe complication that can occur is diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a life-threatening condition that requires immediate medical attention. Symptoms of DKA include fruity-smelling breath, dry skin, nausea, abdominal pain, and confusion.

Currently, there's no cure for type 1 diabetes, but it can be managed with insulin therapy. People with the condition need to take insulin through injections or an insulin pump to help regulate their blood sugar levels. Monitoring blood sugar levels regularly and maintaining a balanced diet are also crucial for managing the disease.

Researchers are exploring new treatments, including immunotherapy and beta-cell replacement, offering hope for better management and potential cures in the future.
