Your bones don’t just need movement. They need LOAD.
Walking is one of the best habits you can have for your health but for women approaching and after menopause, walking alone may not be enough stimulus to protect bone density.
As estrogen declines, bone loss accelerates. Women can lose up to 20% of their bone density in the 5–7 years after menopause.
And this is where the type of exercise matters.
Research examining walking as a stand-alone intervention in peri- and postmenopausal women found no significant improvement in bone mineral density at the lumbar spine, radius, or whole body, although longer-duration walking may provide some benefit at the femoral neck.
Bone responds to mechanical loading.
That’s why strength training matters.
In the LIFTMOR randomized controlled trial, postmenopausal women with low bone mass performed 30 minutes of supervised high-intensity resistance + impact training just twice per week for 8 months.
The results:
• Lumbar spine BMD: +2.9% vs −1.2% in the control group
• Femoral neck BMD: +0.3% vs −1.9% in the control group
• Strength and physical function also improved significantly.
This doesn’t mean you should stop walking.
Walk for your heart, your brain, your metabolic health and your daily movement.
Strength train for your muscles — and give your bones the loading stimulus they need.
After 40, the goal isn’t simply to stay active.
It’s to stay STRONG.
Save this as your reminder: walking + strength training > walking alone.
