This story was shared by Lilu — and it's a gem.
He talked about his twenty-year friendship with Charlie Munger. Yes, that Charlie Munger. Every summer, their families would gather on Star Island in Minnesota, surrounded by one of the state’s biggest, most beautiful lakes. You’d think that’s where they’d fish. But nope.
Instead, they’d hop on a boat to the mainland, jump into a truck, and drive an hour to some random smaller lake. And every trip? A new spot.
Eventually, Lilu asked the obvious question: “Why not just fish here, right next to Star Island?”
Charlie shrugged and said, “You can try it.”
So Lilu did. And yep — nothing. Barely a nibble.
The secret? A local fishing guide named Donnie. His family had been running a bait shop for generations. Donnie knew the lakes like the back of his hand — which ones had fish, which ones didn’t, what kind, what season, even which part of the lake to fish in. Munger always followed Donnie’s lead — and they always caught fish.
That’s when Munger dropped his principle (not just in fishing, but in investing too):
“Fish where the fish are.”
Two rules, he said:
1. Fish where the fish are.
2. Never forget rule number one.
It’s about investing — and life. Don’t waste time in the biggest pond just because it looks impressive. Go where the opportunities are. Often, that’s in the smaller, overlooked spots. The ones with less competition. The ones no one’s talking about yet.
That’s where the real catch is.
