It's 34°C but fair weather all day. Did a run of laundry at the laundromat and stopped by a food truck in the neighborhood for a quick al fresco lunch.

We had some laksa (thick rice noodles in a tangy, spicy fish broth made from mackerel and tamarind) and iced "lychee kang" (herbal concoction made with lychee fruit, herbal jelly, and basil seeds) to beat the heat. The missus had "cendol" (pandan jelly in coconut milk and palm syrup), and here's to a slurpy Sunday!

Have a good weekend everyone!

It's NKD! Got myself a proper chopper at Outdoor Gathering 2025 in Putrajaya.

Stopped by Parang Tantari booth, a local maker known for their rugged parangs and machetes. After a good chat with the founder, I picked up a "Duku Chendong" style parang, something I’ve been meaning to get for a while.

The design hails from Borneo and it’s a solid 12" chopper, made from 5160 spring steel with a handle crafted from Malaysian Ebony, locally known as "Kayu Arang Bunga". Comes with a neat kydex sheath and belt loop setup, and I might buy one of their kydex ferrocerium rod holder & Morakniv sheath combo in the future.

Looking at the blade, it is well-built and should handle brush clearing, bamboo work, and campfire prep with ease. Looking forward to bringing it along on the next adventure!

For the final segment of the video, En. Mazlan Mahmud from the NGO Ancient Kedah Resources led an insightful tour of the Sg. Batu Archaeological Complex. It was a truly enlightening experience, as we explored ancient sites dating back to 788 BC, which itself is an astonishing marvel of history.

With this, our journey through Ancient Kedah expedition came to a close.
Before heading back to KL, our trusted expedition confidant, Cikgu Zam, graciously hosted a farewell lunch at his relative’s home. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to En. Mazlan Mahmud and his family for their generous hospitality, as well as to everyone who played a role in making this trip a memorable success.

Until our next adventure!

En. Mazlan Mahmud is a co-founder of the NGO Ancient Kedah Heritage Resources (together with Prof. Dato' Dr. Mokhtar Saidin), an organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich archaeological and historical heritage of Kedah, Malaysia. His work focuses on raising awareness about the ancient civilizations of the region, particularly the iron-smelting industry that thrived in areas like Sungai Batu in the Bujang Valley.

Through community engagement and educational initiatives, En. Mazlan and his organization aim to highlight Kedah's significance in early global trade networks and its contributions to metallurgy.

Join us as we ascend the majestic Mount Jerai to observe Padang Tok Sheikh. Along the way, we uncover ancient marine fossils, revealing that this peak was once submerged beneath the ocean over 550 million years ago. These findings highlight the mountain's transformation due to tectonic uplift and magma intrusion.

After soaking in the panoramic sunset views from Jerai Hills Resort (where the vast paddy fields meet the sea) we descend to the home of En. Mazlan, co-founder of the NGO Ancient Kedah Heritage Resources. There, we are treated to a warm supper and an enlightening and exclusive presentation on the region's rich history of iron smelting. Discover how Kedah's ancient iron industry, dating back to 788 BC, positioned it as a significant player in early global trade networks.

Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more insights into Southeast Asia's oldest civilizations.

Join us as we embark on an epic journey through time in Part 1 of the Ancient Kedah Chronicles. This episode begins at Tanjung Dawai Jetty, overlooking the river estuary that once served as a vital trade route for the ancient Kedah civilization — a thriving entrepôt over 2,000 years ago.

From there, we head to Pantai Merdeka, where we uncover the geological marvel of Mount Jerai, formed by magma intrusion some 550 million years ago. This process pushed granite from the seabed to create the towering peak we see today serving as a natural beacon for ancient maritime traders and the source of rich iron ore deposits. This very iron made Ancient Kedah emerge as one of the earliest iron-exporting civilizations in the world, dating back to 788 BC.

We then journey inland to the Bujang Valley Archaeological Complex and Museum, where we discover how granite from Mount Jerai’s base was chiseled into blocks used to build “candi”, sacred temples and places of worship, revealing the spiritual and cultural depth of this ancient kingdom.

The episode ends with a relaxing and delicious lunch at Merbok River Oysters, a floating restaurant upon the Merbok River, serving fresh, divine oysters in a serene riverside setting.

History. Geology. Culture. Cuisine.

This is a throwback on Malaysia Day 2024, we did more than just celebrate — we conquered!

A 16-car convoy blazed its way from Kuala Lumpur to Lepar, Pahang; pushing through a brutal 9-hour, 60KM off-road trail that tested both man and machine. Mud, river crossings, and jungle terrain — we tackled it all. Vehicle Recovery — we did it.

But the real reward? Camping paradise. The place was called Kem Berangan with crystal-clear rivers, untouched forests, and the kind of peace you can only find deep in the wild. For 4 days and 3 nights, we chilled by the water, cooked hearty meals, laughed under the stars, and reconnected — with nature and with each other.

It wasn’t just an expedition. It was a soul reset.
New friendships were made, old ones grew stronger, and memories were etched forever into our story.

If you love the thrill of the trail, the freedom of the outdoors, and the bond of a convoy — this is one adventure you don’t want to miss.

Hit play. Live the journey. Feel the adventure.
