I’ve been on a steep financial learning curve since I joined Epic Angels earlier this year.

I remember spending my first founder call quietly googling terms like CAC and ARR during the pitch... 🙈

3 things I learned I learned from this conversation with co-founder of Epic Angels and many time entrepreneur Maaike Doyer:

1. The can be partly explained by our desire to hold onto what feels secure - particularly in something as risky as investing in start ups. Male investors choose founders they can relate to because this “feels” safer. But female investors often do the same. Maaike has seen the same chemistry mis-match when all male teams pitch to women. We need investors of all stripes for a truly diverse and innovative in Asia-Pac.

2. just means something didn’t work. Look at it as an opportunity to adapt.

3. Amazing things can happen when our backs are up against the wall.

When I spoke to Radhika Mayani, founder of plantable stationary brand left_handesign , I was struck by how often she uses ‘organic’ language to talk about her business - she speaks of “sowing seeds of intention” and “ideas sprouting”.

It makes sense when you’re selling nature. But it also helps develop resilience when your business is about changing behaviour and encouraging all households and businesses to switch to zero waste or plantable stationary.

Tune in tomorrow to hear Radhika talk about building a business inspired by nature and when to embrace slowness.

Talking about building a purposeful, community centric business with founder Lucy Dunne this week.

Yes, you’ll get some great fitness and nutrition tips (did you know strength training can support gut heath?)

But you’ll also get some tips on how to do hard things. Motivation, or what Lucy calls “mental toughness” can be learned, and Lucy tells you how. She also talks about the importance of community, for developing mental toughness, but also in growing your business.

is an entrepreneur who gives me hope for the future of business. While a full time engineering student, she’s founded 4 businesses (or “projects” as she prefers to call them) all with the goal of solving problems from food waste to access to healthcare.

In this episode, we’re talking about and how she and some classmates decided to turn unused bread, destined for landfill, into beer.
