Tonight is the eve of November 10. In 1995, an incident which has remained part of the Ogoni history rocked the world to its roots. 9 Ogoni leaders were killed in the most inhuman form after a shabby military trial.

4 other Ogoni elders had lost their lives in a very gruesome circumstance in Gioko. Ogoni lost 13 statesmen in less than a year and its future looked bleak.

No tribe can survive such loss. But Ogoni survived it. The survival has been brutal and strenuous but therein lie the lessons, in the many forms they may appear. To always stand up for our rights and to abhor violence, and also to prosper.

Tonight, there would be candlelight procession around the world to mark 24 years of this terribly sad incident. While Ken Saro-Wiwa may be the face of the struggle, all Ogonis, living and dead are connected to this struggle.

While you remember 1995 today and its darkness, remember that you are light. Remember that you can live the essence of the struggle, to be educated, to be economically liberal, to be your brother's keeper, to prosper and to love Ogoni with all your heart.

Proudly Ogoni!
