GARDEN STATE

I don't agree with gatekeeping music, or any art, but this movie cause endless TRL fans to claim to be "indie" because they have that the Shins song on their iPod (no, I didn't spell that wrong, go Dogpile search iPod.) Or when the OC introduced Death Cab for Cutie to the mainstream. I'm thrilled more people learned of less known artists, and hopefully making more money they deserve. But, the brand new fans acting elitist is bothersome.

Movie Review: The Wrecking Crew (2026)

A high-octane blend of comedy and action, this film reunites estranged brothers to solve the mystery of their father’s murder.

The story follows a no-nonsense Marine, played by Dave Bautista, and his chaotic police officer brother, portrayed by Jason Momoa, as they navigate a strained relationship and a lethal conspiracy involving the Yakuza.

Directed by Angel Manuel Soto, the film excels in its balance of bone-crunching stunts and slapstick humor. The plot kicks into gear when a digital drive left by their father puts a target on Momoa’s back, leading to a standout sequence where he dispatches Yakuza assassins while dancing—a moment that perfectly encapsulates the film's wild energy.

While the narrative relies on the familiar odd couple trope, the chemistry between the leads provides a solid emotional core. Bautista delivers a grounded, serious performance that contrasts sharply with Momoa’s manic charisma. It is worth noting that a weathered Bautista shows his age here, signaling a definitive transition away from his more youthful roles like Drax.

For audiences seeking a fun, unpretentious action flick (8/10), The Wrecking Crew delivers exactly what it promises: Momoa being Momoa and plenty of brotherly bickering amidst the explosions. It is a satisfying ride that proves some bonds are unbreakable, no matter how many Yakuza are in the way.

Review: Rental Family (2025)

Rental Family is arguably the most emotionally resonant yet "feel-good" film of 2025. It offers a powerful emotional journey that is both heart-wrenching and uplifting, making it a perfect watch for anyone needing a boost of inspiration.

Brendan Fraser delivers a masterful performance as a lonely "gaijin" (foreigner) in Japan. A struggling actor, he finds work at a rental agency where he is hired to play various roles—father, uncle, or husband—for clients in need of human connection. The film masterfully balances deep drama with natural, understated humor, avoiding forced laughs in favor of genuine storytelling.

While the film utilizes both English and Japanese, the heavy focus on Japanese dialogue and its unique portrayal of local culture adds a refreshing depth to the experience. From shocking middle scenes to a deeply moving finale, the film leaves a lasting impact on the heart.

Review: The RIP (Netflix)

This is a solid investigation thriller involving the FBI, corruption, and well-executed plot twists. While the genre focuses more on suspense and intense dialogue rather than non-stop action, the pacing remains tight and engaging.

The film features a great cast, including Scott Adkins in a more grounded role and Daisuke Tsuji (the voice of Jin Sakai from Ghost of Tsushima). The heavy dialogue is elevated by the performances of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, combined with a tense musical score that keeps the audience on edge.

It is a high-quality thriller that prioritizes intellectual intensity over mindless action.

Review: Welcome to Derry

While often compared to Stranger Things, Welcome to Derry is a mixed bag. The young cast actually outperforms the ST kids, and the show isn't afraid to get much gorier with far less "plot armor" for its characters.

However, it falls short in other areas. The retro atmosphere doesn't hit as well as ST's iconic soundtrack, and the villain's motives are confusing and more annoying than frightening. With a slow pace and a lackluster ending, it earns a 6/10—watchable for the acting, but ultimately underwhelming.
