Every Ex*****on Is a Wound
Yesterday I held in my hands a notice of death, the official ex*****on letter (pic) for my former client, Datchinamurthy a/l Kataiah. He is scheduled to be executed this Thursday. He was sentenced to death
for trafficking in 44.96g of diamorphine.
I spoke with his mother after receiving the notice. Her voice cracked as she described the unthinkable, preparing a funeral while her son still breathes. This is the cruelty of the death penalty: families must count the hours, wait outside Changi Prison through the night, and be ready to collect the body of the child they raised.
Datchinamurthy is one of the gentlest souls I have ever met. His kindness and quiet dignity stayed with me long after our meetings ended.
I have represented about 35 people facing the death penalty. I carry each of those stories with me.
I am, by nature, a happy person with no complaints about the life I have lived, but every ex*****on leaves a scar.
The nights outside Changi, the early morning calls, the sight of families walking out with nothing but grief, these moments never leave you. They shape you.
Datchinamurthy’s case also revealed how fragile due process can be. The prison authorities once forwarded his confidential correspondence to the Attorney-General’s Chambers, a breach of prisoner rights that the court later ruled unlawful. Yet he will still be put to death.
No society is made safer by killing in the name of law. No government gains honour by rehearsing the machinery of death.
I grieve for Datchinamurthy, for his mother, and for every family forced to endure this.
And I ask again, as I have for decades:
