你有没有遇过这样的情况?

一条道路刚建好时,看起来平平整整。

可是过了一段时间……

某个地方开始出现轻微下沉。
路面变得不平。
甚至开车经过时,会感觉到明显的“波浪”。

很多人的第一个反应可能是:

“新路罢了,怎么这么快就坏了?”

但从工程师的角度来看,问题有时候并不在我们看到的那层黑色沥青。

真正的问题,可能藏在地下几十米。

# # # 🌴 我们看到的是道路,工程师看到的是道路下面的土地

在砂拉越修路,有一个很大的挑战——软弱地基。

有些地方表面看起来是一片普通的土地,但下面可能是很深的泥炭土(peat)或软黏土(soft clay)。

想象一下:

如果你把一本很重的书放在坚硬的桌子上,它不会怎么样。

但如果你把同一本书放在一块厚厚的海绵上呢?

海绵会慢慢被压下去。

道路也是一样。

一条公路加上几米高的填土,重量可能非常巨大。

当这些重量压在很软的土层上时,地下的土就会慢慢被压缩。

工程上,我们把其中一个重要过程称为:

Consolidation Settlement —— 固结沉降。

# # # ⏳ 最麻烦的是,它不一定马上发生

这就是软土工程有趣、也困难的地方。

你今天把道路建上去,地下的软土并不会说:

“OK,我现在一次过沉完给你。” 😆

它可能需要几个月。

有时候几年。

因为软黏土里面含有水。

受到道路重量挤压以后,土里的水需要时间慢慢排出去。

水排出的同时,土层逐渐压缩,道路也会跟着产生沉降。

所以工程师真正要考虑的,不只是:

“这条路今天能不能建?”

而是:

“五年、十年以后,它会变成什么样?”

# # # 🏗️ 那工程师怎么办?

这也是为什么你有时候会看到一个很奇怪的工程现象:

路还没有建,工程师却先放很多很多泥土在那里。

然后……等。

路过的人可能会想:

“做么放了这么久都没有做路?” 😂

其实,它可能正在进行非常重要的预压(Preloading)。

简单来说,就是:

先让土地承受重量,让大部分应该发生的沉降,在正式道路建成以前先发生。

有些工程还会采用排水板、轻质填料、土工材料、桩基,或者其他地基处理方法。

选择哪一种,没有一个万能答案。

因为每一块土地的情况都不同。

# # # 💰 为什么不全部打桩就好了?

当然可以问:

“既然软土这么麻烦,全部用桩不是最安全?”

工程师考虑的不只是“能不能做”。

还要考虑:

安全、成本、施工时间、材料、环境,以及未来维护。

如果一个 RM10 million 的工程方法能够安全解决问题,就没有理由为了追求“最强”,使用 RM50 million 的方法。

真正好的工程,并不是永远使用最贵、最强的方法。

而是:

在正确的地方,使用正确的方法。

所以下一次,当你看到一条道路旁边堆着大量泥土,几个月好像“没有动静”……

它未必是什么都没有发生。

你看不到的地下,

可能正在进行整个道路工程里最重要的一部分。

这就是土木工程有趣的地方。

我们每天看到的是一条路。

但一条路真正的故事,

往往从我们看不到的地下开始。

# # 🚧 Why Does a Newly Built Road Sometimes Sink?

Have you ever noticed this?

A newly completed road looks perfectly smooth when it first opens.

But after some time…

Certain sections begin to sink.
The surface becomes uneven.
And when you drive over it, you may even feel the road becoming “wavy”.

The first reaction is often:

“This is a new road. Why is it already damaged?”

But from an engineer’s point of view, the problem may not actually be in the black asphalt that we can see.

The real problem could be hidden many metres beneath the road.

# # # 🌴 We see a road. Engineers see what is underneath it.

Building roads in Sarawak comes with a particular challenge:

Soft ground.

In some areas, what looks like perfectly normal ground at the surface may actually have deep layers of peat or soft clay underneath.

Imagine placing a heavy book on a solid table.

Nothing much happens.

Now imagine placing the same book on a thick sponge.

The sponge slowly compresses under the weight.

The ground beneath a road can behave in a similar way.

A road, together with several metres of embankment fill, can be extremely heavy.

When all that weight is placed on very soft ground, the soil underneath gradually compresses.

One important process behind this is called:

Consolidation Settlement.

# # # ⏳ The tricky part? It doesn't necessarily happen immediately.

This is what makes soft-ground engineering so interesting — and challenging.

When we construct a road today, the soft soil underneath doesn't say:

“Okay, I'll finish all my settlement today!” 😆

It takes time.

Sometimes months.

Sometimes years.

Soft clay contains water within its tiny pores.

When the weight of the road and embankment presses down on it, that water needs time to slowly escape.

As the water drains out, the soil gradually compresses.

And when the ground settles…the road above it settles too.

That's why engineers don't only ask:

“Can we build this road?”

We also need to ask:

“What will happen to this road five or ten years from now?”

# # # 🏗️ So, what can engineers do?

This explains something you may have seen at construction sites.

Sometimes, before the actual road is even built, contractors place a huge amount of earth on the site.

And then…they wait.

People passing by may wonder:

“Why did they dump all that soil there and stop working?” 😂

But something very important may actually be happening underground.

One method is called **Preloading**.

In simple terms:

We deliberately place additional weight on the soft ground so that much of the expected settlement happens BEFORE the permanent road is completed.

Depending on the ground conditions, engineers may also use:

Prefabricated Vertical Drains (PVD), lightweight fill, geosynthetics, ground improvement, piling, or other engineering solutions.

There is no single solution that works everywhere.

Because every site is different.

# # # 💰 Why don't we just use piles everywhere?

That's a fair question.

If soft ground is such a problem, why not simply support every road on piles?

Technically, piling may be one possible solution.

But engineering isn't only about asking:

“Can we build it?”

We also need to consider:

Safety. Cost. Construction time. Materials. Environmental impact. Maintenance.

If a RM10 million engineering solution can safely achieve the required performance, there may be little justification for using a RM50 million solution simply because it is “stronger”.

Good engineering isn't about choosing the most expensive solution.

It's about choosing:

The right solution, for the right place, for the right reason.

So the next time you drive past a future road and see mountains of earth sitting there for months with seemingly “nothing happening”…

Remember:

It may not mean that nothing is happening.

Beneath the ground where we cannot see it,
one of the most important stages of the entire road construction may already be taking place.

And that's one of the fascinating things about civil engineering.

We see a road on the surface.

But the real story of that road…often begins underground.

"Bangkitlah Sarawak" is our tribute to this remarkable journey—a song that honours our history, celebrates our unity, and reminds us to cherish the homeland we proudly call home.

No matter our race, language or faith, we are united by one identity—we are Anak Sarawak.

May we continue to preserve our heritage, strengthen our unity, and build a brighter future for generations to come.

Today, we remember those who built our homeland with courage, resilience, and unity.

Their greatest legacy is not only the Sarawak they built, but the values they left us—to live in harmony, respect one another, and stand united across every race, religion, and culture.

Now, it is our turn to carry that legacy forward.

Bangkitlah Sarawak | From the Ashes of War to the Formation of Malaysia, 1945–1963

When the Japanese Occupation ended in 1945, Sarawak emerged from the darkness of war wounded—but not defeated.

Homes and communities had suffered. Families carried memories of fear, loss and sacrifice. Yet from those difficult years, the people of Sarawak began rebuilding their homeland with courage, hope and an unbreakable spirit.

In 1946, Sarawak became a British Crown Colony. The years that followed brought major political and social changes, as Sarawakians continued searching for a stronger voice and a future shaped by their own people.

Then came 22 July 1963, when Sarawak achieved self-government and an elected Sarawak government took responsibility for administering the homeland. It was a defining step in Sarawak’s journey—one that we continue to commemorate on Sarawak Day.

On 16 September 1963, Sarawak stood together with the Federation of Malaya, Sabah and Singapore to form a new nation called Malaysia. Sarawak did not simply join an existing Malaysia—Sarawak was a party to its formation and helped create the federation.

We remember our past not to remain in it, but to understand how far we have come—and how precious peace, unity and self-determination truly are.

Be proud of our homeland and our place as a founding partner in the formation of Malaysia.

A New Landmark Rises Over the Sarawak River | Sejingkat Bridge 2026

The Sejingkat Bridge is set to become another iconic landmark in Kuching, Sarawak.

Fully funded by the Sarawak Government, this RM366 million cable-stayed bridge stretches 1.28 km across the Sarawak River, connecting Sejingkat and Tanjung Bako as part of the Sarawak Second Trunk Road.

Once completed in 2026, the bridge will ease traffic congestion, shorten travel times between Kuching, Samarahan and surrounding coastal towns, and support the long-term development of Demak Laut. It will also pave the way for future strategic projects, including the proposed New Kuching Airport and Tanjung Embang Deep-Sea Port.

This video showcases the construction progress of one of Sarawak's most important infrastructure projects. Well done to the Sarawak Government and Construction Team!

🎉 Another Proud Milestone for Sarawak!

2nd July 2026 marks the successful stitching ceremony of the final bridge segment of Batang Lupar Bridge No. 2—the highest cable-stayed bridge in Malaysia (145.5m high).

This achievement brings the project one step closer to completion and reflects the dedication of everyone involved in making this iconic bridge a reality.

Once completed, it will enhance connectivity between communities, shorten travel time, stimulate economic growth, and unlock new opportunities throughout the region of Sri Aman and Betong.

Congratulations to the entire project team! 👏
