With the brilliant Senia anak Jugi .
Last week we visited Senia’s bengkel at , where she taught us how to make an Iban woven basket. Commonly called a “bakul berkaki”, traditionally it was called “Timpa Indai Bilai”.

Joining the class were and , alongside artist in residence at .boroujeni

Senia has been Catama’s craft mentor for over a decade. As usual she was super generous to share her knowledge and expertise with us, though we couldn’t keep up with her fast weaving fingers!

Senia is a prominent figure in Malaysia’s craft scene, with her own beautiful handbag range, alongside making products and prototypes for renowned design houses.
She knows much indigenous craft lore and motifs, and is an expert in weaving rattan, bamboo and bemban, alongside experimenting with plastic and leathers.
She has taught craft weaving and product development across rural Sarawak, and internationally, and has received awards for her contribution to craft.
Humble and full of heart she is indeed a national treasure, and deserves much celebration and respect for the work she does x x x

Thank you Senia ❤️

Join us for an evening of sharing on archiving, documentation, and creative practice.
How do we document what we do — and why does it matter?
Who gets remembered, and who is left out?

This session invites artists, researchers, and cultural practitioners to reflect on archives not just as records, but as spaces for questioning, storytelling, and reclaiming narratives. Through examples and conversation, we’ll explore how documentation can become part of the art-making process itself.

🕢 2 April 2026, 7.30pm
📍 Ruang Tamu Ekosistem, Kota Kinabalu
🔈 Presentation in English and Malay
📖 Free entry, Register at tinyurl.com/RSVParchiving

Open to all — come listen, reflect, and join the conversation.

Natural fibres sourced and collected from the jungle are used to make hats and costume pieces. Woved, plaited, bound and strung together, communities often have their own unique way of making and decorating traditional head gear.

🌳 From craft to architecture rattan is a vital and significant material sourced from the jungle. Used by many communities across Malaysia, it has been traded locally and overseas for millenia.
Do you know what the red rattan berry can be used for?
