Gold prices edged lower, while silver soared to a record high. The market is increasingly confident that the central bank is going to cut (rates) and in response to that, we've seen the U.S. dollar weaken a little bit and that's accretive for gold," said Bart Melek global head of commodity strategy at TD Securities.

Gold climbed to around $4,160 per ounce on Wednesday to a near two week high as expectations for looser US policy lowered the dollar and cut the opportunity cost of holding bullion.

U.S. Treasury yields were mixed on Wednesday as stronger-than-expected economic data fueled selling, but a sharp rally in UK government bonds helped limit the downside for longer-dated U.S. debt.
