The 2024 winner of the Eurovision song contest is handing back their trophy, joining a mounting chorus of protest at the inclusion of Israel in the competition as it continues its genocidal assault on Gaza.

The Swiss singer, Nemo, said in a statement on Instagram on Thursday that “the contest was repeatedly used to soften the image of a state accused of severe wrongdoing”.

It comes after Iceland became the fifth country to announce it would not compete next year unless Israel was excluded, in accordance with widespread calls for a cultural boycott of the country aimed at curbing its massacres of Palestinians.

Ireland, Spain, Slovenia and the Netherlands announced last week that they were boycotting the event because of Israel's inclusion.

In Portugal, 17 artists competing to represent the country next year have said they will boycott Eurovision if they are chosen to compete. Portugal’s public broadcaster, PTE, has said it intends to participate regardless.

Salvador Sobral, the only Portuguese artist to have won Eurovision, accused the broadcaster of "political cowardice".
