HAPPY DIWALI

Diwali, also called Deepavali or Deepawali, is the Hindu Festival of lights.

Diwali is connected to various religious events, deities and personalities, such as being the day Rama returned to his kingdom in Ayodhya with his wife Sita and his brother Lakshmana after defeating the demon king Ravana. It is also widely associated with Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity, and Ganesha, the god of wisdom and the remover of obstacles. Other regional traditions connect the holiday to Vishnu, Krishna, Durga, Shiva, Kali, Hanuman, Kubera, Yama, Yami, Dhanvantari, or Vishvakarman.

Primarily a Hindu festival, variations of Diwali are also celebrated by adherents of other faiths. The Jains observe their own Diwali which marks the final liberation of Mahavira. The Sikhs celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas to mark the release of Guru Hargobind from a Mughal prison. Newar Buddhists, unlike other Buddhists, celebrate Diwali by worshipping Lakshmi, while the Hindus of Eastern India and Bangladesh generally, celebrate Diwali by worshipping the goddess Kali.

During the festival, the celebrants illuminate their homes, temples and workspaces with diyas (oil lamps), candles and lanterns. Hindus, in particular, have a ritual oil bath at dawn on each day of the festival. Diwali is also marked with fireworks as well as the decoration of floors with rangoli designs and other parts of the house with jhalars. Food is a major focus with families partaking in feasts and sharing mithai. The festival is an annual homecoming and bonding period not only for families, but also for communities and associations, particularly those in urban areas, which will organise activities, events, and gatherings. Many towns organise community parades and fairs with parades or music and dance performances in parks. Some Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs will send Diwali greeting cards to family near and far during the festive season, occasionally with boxes of Indian confectionery. Another aspect of the festival is remembering the ancestors.

HOMME TRIBUTE : D’Angelo, Acclaimed and Reclusive R&B Innovator, Dies at 51

Michael Eugene Archer, known to the world as D’Angelo, the soul singer, songwriter, and producer whose visionary work reshaped the landscape of R&B, has died. He was 51. His death was confirmed by a family representative, though no cause or location was immediately disclosed.

Emerging from the vibrant neo-soul movement of the mid-1990s, D’Angelo was not merely a participant but a pioneer. His 1995 debut, Brown Sugar, was a quiet earthquake. With its hushed, hypnotic grooves and jazz-inflected melodies, it offered a stark, sensual alternative to the polished R&B of the era. Tracks like the title song and “Lady” became instant classics, establishing him as a rare artist whose appeal was rooted in raw talent and sophisticated musicality, not just image.

If Brown Sugar was a promise, his 2000 masterpiece, Voodoo, was a revelation. A sprawling, deeply funky, and spiritually resonant opus, it was recorded with his collective, The Soulquarians. The album, anchored by the epochal single “Untitled (How Does It Feel),” was a raw, organic counterpoint to digital production. Its accompanying video, focusing almost entirely on his sculpted physique, however, created an idolatry that overwhelmed the music, plunging the intensely private artist into a personal and professional crisis.

What followed was a fourteen-year silence, a period of reclusion and struggle that became as much a part of his legend as his music. He battled personal demons, yet his absence only heightened his mythic status. His eventual return with the fiercely articulate and politically charged Black Messiah in 2014 was not a comeback, but a reclamation. Released amid social unrest, the album proved his genius had not dimmed but had deepened, offering a potent commentary on love, power, and race.

D’Angelo’s legacy is one of profound influence and unyielding integrity. He was an artist in the purest sense, for whom the music was everything. He eschewed the trappings of fame, leaving behind a small but perfect catalogue that inspired a generation of artists, from Maxwell and Erykah Badu to Frank Ocean and Anderson.

ROLLS-ROYCE PRESENTS CULLINAN COSMOS: A ONE-OF ONE COMMISSION THAT CELEBRATES THE DRAMA OF SPACE
Rolls-Royce presents Cullinan Cosmos: a one-of-one commission that celebrates the drama of outer space. Commissioned by a family who shares a fascination for the universe with their four-year-old son, this theme was brought to life through a constellation of Bespoke details. At its centre is a Rolls-Royce first – a hand-painted Starlight Headliner painstakingly developed by one of the marque’s in-house artists over 160 hours.

“We wanted to create something our family would remember forever: a Rolls-Royce that captures the essence of the cosmos and shows that no dream is out of reach.”
Commissioning Client, Cullinan Cosmos

“Space travel is an enduring fascination for the commissioning clients of this extraordinary one-of-one motor car. For the Bespoke Collective, this project also explored new frontiers, with our first-ever hand-painted Starlight Headliner. Bold in its conception and spectacular in its realisation, this commission demonstrates how Rolls-Royce brings clients’ otherworldly visions to life with drama, depth, and absolute precision.”
