The George Town Institute of Open and Advanced Studies (GIOAS) launched David Goh's "Spirited tribal art exhibition at the Wawasan Open University (WOU) main campus today. It is free and open to the public.

The exhibition, first of its kind in Penang, features art pieces collected by David Goh, the founder of Entopia (formerly Penang Butterfly Farm), from indigenous artists throughout Southeast Asia, during his butterfly-collecting expeditions from Peninsular Malaysia to Papua New Guinea.

The exhibition was officially opened by Dato' Seri Dr Anwar Fazal, the Chairman of Think City. who was presented with a catalogue memento.

GIOAS, an institute within WOU, sought to highlight the ancient cultures of tribal communities This exhibition reflects on historical violence and inequities inflicted on indigenous peoples and the consequence these had on our 'modern' perception of their lives and forms of expression.

GIOAS chairman, Tan Sri Andrew Sheng, in his foreword for the book, "Spirited - Human Art of the Non-Human", stated that he was "struck by the stunning vitality and vibrancy of the masks and wood carvings that clearly put the creators' mark on their world dating back millennia".

He shared Goh's sense of wonder and curiosity in the art of ancient. He said Goh found a talented young man, Tan Yu Kai, as his curator, who selected the pieces for the exhibition and also wrote the text for the "Spirited" book, with photographs by KC Ooi.

"Such bold, imaginative art should be shown to the present and future generations. Anyone interested in our ancient cultures would be impressed to learn about how tribal societies expressed their hopes, fears and stresses in coping with uncertainty and the natural world," Tan Sri Sheng asserted.

Goh, owner of the collection, and Tan, curator of the exhibition, were present and spoke at the launch.

Tan described "Spirited" as "a unique trove of treasures". Of the exhibition, he said, "We celebrate Goh's clarity of vision, and his monumental collection that continues to serve the global and local community as a source of inspiration, a library of research data, a portal to our collective past and futures, and an attraction for aficionados around the globe, propelling the status of Penang as a cultural and intellectual hub of the region towards international acclaim."

He continued, "Drawing from a trove of thousands of treasures, we assembled some sixty that compelled us to question status quos and fundamental assumptions about humanity, its reticular complexity and elementary modesty, its startling beauty and revolting wickedness."

Visitors will be able to fully immerse themselves in each piece because of its vibrant colours. detailed patterns, and stories that are weaved into every carving and artifact. The exhibition will feature spirits in the woods, angry ancestors, and immortal creatures telling tales of yesteryear.

This exhibition at the Homestead is open to the public until 16 January 2004 (except public holidays) from 10.00am to 4:00pm. The art pieces testify to Goh's imagination and passion in gathering them for the enjoyment of future generations.
