"It can't be that hard, right?"

That's what some of us thought before strapping a watermelon to our stomachs and attempting a normal day at the office.

A few awkward bends and one accident at a spiral staircase later, we gained a whole new appreciation for what many mothers go through every day. No challenge can fully replicate pregnancy, but it certainly reminded us not to take a mother's strength for granted 😌

Happy Mother's Day to all the incredible mums. 💐

To better understand a thing many families experience but often struggle to navigate, we spoke to Prof Tan Maw Pin — how older adults think about health, and why conversations don’t always land the way we expect.

The conversation unpacks the realities behind these behaviours, and more importantly, how we can communicate better, so health advice becomes not just heard, but accepted and acted on.

Eventually, what works isn’t always what’s said, but how it’s heard.

Yesterday was a day well spent pretending we had wandered into Alice in Wonderland (floral edition 🌸✨). We were lucky enough to witness the stunning blooms showcased by orchid societies and growers from across Asia at BUNGA 2026 yesterday at Resorts World Awana.

There’s still time to visit!
📍Awana Village, Resorts World Awana
📆 3 - 7 June 2026
The BUNGA 2026 exhibition brings together some of the region’s most beautiful orchids and flowering plants under one roof (including award-winning blooms!🌸🌷🌺).

Families can continue their nature-filled adventure with a visit to Orchadia, home to thousands of beautiful orchids, and Eufloria, where vibrant blooms and lush landscapes come together under one roof. There’s plenty to enjoy around the resort too, such as guided rainforest explorations, seed planting activities for little nature lovers, outdoor sports, and even a refreshing dip in the heated pool.

With so much to see and do, it’s the kind of place that encourages families to slow down, spend time together, and reconnect with nature. 🪴🕊️

Being part of the sandwich generation often means caring in two directions - for your children and your ageing parents.

But as Tan Maw Pin highlights, when it comes to health, the goal isn’t just to care more. It’s to empower older adults to stay healthy, independent, and in control—before they need help.

As we know, “Prevention is better than cure”, and so prevention needs to begin earlier than we realise.

What gives us purpose each day?

For Dr Tony Leachon, it comes back to 5 simple things: faith, family, fitness, friends, and a purpose beyond himself. But at the heart of it all is something universal: the desire to stay well enough, to keep showing up for the people who matter most.

And that is really what For the Reasons That Matter is about - reminding us that health is not just clinical, but deeply personal. Health, in the end, is personal.

For older adults, independence means everything.

To make their own decisions, to care, to not be cared for. To grow older with their children, grandchildren—even great-grandchildren.

That is why, according to Prof Tan Maw Pin, Professor in Geriatric Medicine, independence is the reason that matters most to be empowered to stay healthy!

For Dr Tony Leachon, that simple moment with his grandchild says everything.

Sometimes, the strongest reason to care for our health isn’t found in hospitals or textbooks, but in moments like this, spoken by the people we love most. For many older adults, being healthy is about staying present, especially for the family they don’t want to miss growing up.

And that is why prevention matters: so there is more time, more presence, and more of life’s moments that can still be shared.

Why do we fail in health?

Drawing from The Checklist Manifesto by Atul Gawande, Dr Tony Leachon breaks it down into three reasons:
ignorance, ineptitude, and no clear game plan for change.

And perhaps the real shift we need is simple: to move from awareness to action, earlier, with intention, for the reasons that matter.

Concerns are growing over reports of v**e products allegedly containing synthetic drugs being accessed by young users in Malaysia.

According to authorities, social media has become one of the main channels used to promote so-called ‘dadah zombi’, with transactions allegedly taking place through fake accounts, disappearing messages, and invite-only groups that can be difficult for parents and guardians to monitor closely.

What is it?
‘Dadah zombi’ is a term commonly used to describe powerful synthetic opioids such as fentanyl and related substances.

Because fentanyl is extremely strong, even small amounts can carry a serious risk of overdose. The nickname comes from its effects, which may include extreme drowsiness, slowed breathing, confusion, and loss of awareness – causing users to appear ‘zombie-like’ in severe cases.

Why are authorities concerned about v**es?
Recent reports in Malaysia have raised concerns about synthetic drugs being processed into v**e cartridges and electronic ci******es. Authorities have also warned that such substances may sometimes be consumed unknowingly when mixed into v**e liquids, highlighting an emerging risk that health and enforcement agencies are monitoring closely.

Why does social media matter?
Authorities say these substances are increasingly being promoted online, on platforms that many teenagers use daily – often beyond the close supervision of parents or guardians.

As va**ng becomes increasingly common among teenagers and young adults, experts stress the importance of awareness about what may be present in unregulated products and the potential dangers of unknown substances.

In Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Singapore, adult health conversations often share a common theme: not denial, but delay.

“Nanti la.”
“Mamaya na.”
“Next time.”

As Ms Deborah Seifert shared, this quiet postponement is one of the biggest barriers in turning health knowledge into action.

But health doesn’t wait for convenience, so neither should prevention.
