New: Legislature Recording and Archive Solution Case Study

TMD has implemented its media asset management and workflow solution, using its Mediaflex-UMS (Unified Media Services) platform at one of the most important legislatures in the world. The Recording Studio within this Government installation wanted a tape-free system with immediate access to recordings, as well as secure, permanent storage. The solution needed to offer near instant access to live recordings allowing hundreds of users to search, browse, clip, and raise orders to deliver content to a wide range of distribution channels, all via a simple intuitive web interface that requires little to no training. TMD, the leading provider of media management systems for digital and physical assets, announced the full integration of TMD Mediaflex-UMS media service applications with Quantum’s Xcellis workflow storage for seamless archiving. The company has also joined the Quantum Advantage Programme, a platform for partners to test and qualify their technology with Quantum offerings.

TMD’s Mediaflex-UMS enables organisations within the broadcast, media, government, archive and production industries to manage the lifecycle of media content, including creation, digitisation, repurposing, enrichment, delivery, publishing and archiving. In combination with the StorNext-powered Xcellis storage, Mediaflex-UMS provides a powerful and collaborative solution, including a cost-effective archive to preserve content and maximize its value over the entire lifecycle.

“Our goal is to make rich asset management and archiving simple to implement,” said Justin Elkerton, COO, of TMD. “Media enterprises can now buy TMD’s range of media service applications and Quantum’s storage systems – often from the same certified distributor – and get to work protecting their archives straight away, confident that the software and hardware are already integrated and ready for user applications to be defined and that the systems will operate seamlessly.

“All of this is possible because we at TMD have enjoyed great co-operation from the team at Quantum, allowing us to develop and prove the integration,” he added. “It is the co-operation for the benefit of our customers which is marked by our joining the Quantum partner programme.”
TMD and Quantum have worked closely together in the past, developing practical solutions for major users worldwide. As an example, the Asian Film Archive (AFA) in Singapore, a subsidiary of the National Library Board, uses Quantum’s entry level solution archiving with TMD’s Mediaflex Guardian Collections management application.

“A large part of TMD’s success has come through supporting our customers from initial scoping through technical sales to implementation and continuing support,” Elkerton said. “Our partnership with Quantum is another way in which we achieve that goal, allowing us to provide a single point of contact for customers, and to offer a tiered, scalable approach to storage and archiving.”

“TMD is a great fit with our Xcellis workflow storage,” said Anniek Snauwaert, Director, Technology Alliances, at Quantum. “This partnership brings to customers a combination of highly scalable and cost-effective archive solutions with effective media management throughout every stage of the content lifecycle – from conception to creation, to delivery and archive, to repurpose and re-use

TMD announced as TVBAward finalist for archive digitisation

An often overlooked area of expertise, the Infrastructure category highlights the impressive work being done in systems integration, archive digitisation, and media asset management. This year, TMD is a TVBEurope Awards finalist in the Achievement In Archive Digitisation category for work completed on the recent RTÉ cultural archive project.

The project, with Irish national broadcaster RTÉ, involved archiving 10,000 hours of its news archive, a resource of huge cultural and historical significance. RTÉ’s news archive covers the period 1985 to 1999. It is an important part of Irish history and the Broadcast Authority of Ireland (BAI) has contributed funding to preserve it. The project involved archive tapes being digitised to a common MXF file standard, and archived in RTÉ’s TMD Mediaflex® system. Digitised content is accessible to programme producers through Mediaflex’s search and browse tools.

The list of finalists in the Achievements In Archive Digitisation category include:
SaaS product Mediabank
BBC - BBC VE Day: Remembering Victory
BFI - BFI National Archive
TMD - TMD powers new cultural archive project at RTÉ.

TMD integrates Disk Archive ALTO with Paragon archive

TMD, the leading provider of media asset management systems for digital and physical assets, has partnered with Disk Archive Corporation (DAC, Disk Archive) to add the ALTO to the storage options for TMD Paragon archive solution.

ALTO is a replication-based, high-density cold storage platform which removes the need for cumbersome tapes and expensive clustered storage for large volumes of archive storage. Disk Archive ALTO’s unique MAID-III architecture uses a Massive Array of Independent Disks to create a non-linear alternative to LTFS tape storage. Paragon manages the online, offline and vault storage replicas in the same way as barcoded tapes. That results in a scalable and flexible archive platform that can expand on demand, based on locally sourced commodity disks, from a few terabytes to hundreds of petabytes. The ALTO replication technique allows disks that are not actively reading or writing to be taken offline, dramatically reducing power consumption and greatly extending disk life to deliver ultra-low lifetime operating costs.

Award-winning Paragon is a simple-to-implement archiving solution from TMD. Users can choose from any combination of LTO tapes, including the latest LTO-7 format, cloud storage, and now Disk Archive ALTO. The Paragon solution is scalable from small office storage systems to large multiplatform enterprise systems and includes browse-resolution proxy generation, clip selection and partial restore.

“ALTO storage is very attractive for the sort of applications we see for Paragon, which routinely need fast access to clips,” said Tony Taylor, chairman of TMD. “ALTO gives the speed boost of random disk access, while being easy to deploiy and easy to maintain. It is a great addition to our offering.”

Alan Hoggarth, founder and CEO of Disk Archive, added “Broadcasters and media companies are generating ever more content, which must be securely preserved, but may only be infrequently accessed. The challenge is to find an easy and cost effective way to store it. ALTO combines the fast data storage and retrieval of non-linear disk storage with the outstanding security offered by replication. Power savings of up to 70 MWh per petabyte per year and “century-class” data life represent a significant reduction in costs to the business, and an important reduction in carbon footprint that most major broadcasters and many data centers aspire to.
