Chiúre district, in Cabo Delgado, is currently facing an outbreak of bacterial conjunctivitis, commonly known as "mexa-mexa," according to the National Director of Public Health, Quinhas Fernandes. The outbreak has been ongoing since February, with Nakoto village being the most affected area, accounting for 37% of reported cases.
As of February 27, 2025, a total of 1,108 cases have been recorded, with 726 of them occurring in the past week alone. Children under the age of five are the most affected group, making up 55% of cases, totaling 608 infections.
Comparing with the same period in 2024, when only 519 cases were registered in Cabo Delgado, the current numbers indicate an increase of over 100%.
"The risk of spreading to other districts is considered moderate due to population mobility and the highly contagious nature of the disease," Fernandes stated.
