Staff Reporter
EMPLOYMENT opportunities in Namibia is very rare, given limited investment in areas that could provide opportunities for employment to the youth.
Oshikoto Regional chairperson Samuel Shivute, made the remarks during the inauguration of the Okaale Lifestyle Centre and Spar Omuthiya in Oshikoto Region.
Shivute stated that as a result, many of the youth are going astray, due to lack of such employment opportunities.
"Thanks to Okaale Lifestyle Centre, for a great initiative by investing in Omuthiya by uplift the image of our valid town and in turn creating the much needed employment opportunities for our people," he said.
The Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA) shows that the country’s overall unemployment rate dropped by a mere 0.6% in 2016 to 33.4% in 2018.
However, Owner of Okaale Lifestyle Centre Herman, Nekomba, who had a vision to one day own a retail store in Omuthiya was able to employ 357 employees as part of his vision to contribute to employment creation in Namibia.
Of those figures 250 people were employed during the construction of the Centre, while 107 are currently employed as Spar Omuthiya employees.
Nekomba noted that once the Centre is fully occupied it will be able to employe 450 people from Omuthiya and surroundings.
He indicated that in order to grow the economy, jobs need to be created ,services needs to be brought closer to the people and that's what Okaale Lifestyle Centre is doing.
"This is our economy and we are the economy players. We can't sit back and wait for the economy to just pick up by itself, we need to be part of the process," he said.
During the realisation of the Centre, Nekomba indicated that challenges were not far-fetched to them apart from COVID -19, but they remained committed to make sure that the store met the standards of SPAR Group.
