The Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) is proud to announce the official renaming of the
NBC Omurari FM Studio to the Dr. Alexander Jarimbovandu Kaputu Studio, in honour of a
revered traditionalist, historian, and broadcaster whose life’s work has significantly shaped Namibia’s cultural narrative.
Dr. Kaputu, affectionately known as a “walking historical and cultural encyclopaedia,” devoted over three decades of his career at the NBC to the preservation and promotion of Namibia’s rich heritage.
He is especially celebrated for his contributions to the documentation and revival of the Ovaherero
patriclans (Otuzo), foundational to the Ovaherero religion known as Oupuee, and his compelling
comparative approach to storytelling, which drew insightful parallels between Namibian traditions
and global cultural contexts.
His distinctive voice and knowledge resonated through his landmark radio programmes on Omurari FM, many of which continue to broadcast today. As an oral traditionalist, Dr. Kaputu served as a vital bridge between generations, transmitting epic stories, proverbs, songs, and cultural practices that helped solidify communal identity and pride.
Speaking at the unveiling ceremony held at the NBC Radio headquarters in Windhoek, NBC Director General Stanley Similo stated: “Dr. Kaputu’s work is not only a reflection of his profound cultural insight but a blueprint for how media can serve as a custodian of heritage.
Through his voice, generations of Namibians have found meaning, pride, and understanding of who they are and where they come from. Renaming this studio is a tribute to a man who has kept our stories alive.” He emphasized that radio remains the most important medium in media to date!
NBC Board Chairman Lazarus Jacobs added: “This renaming is both symbolic and necessary. Dr.Kaputu’s legacy reaches far beyond the airwaves, it is etched into the soul of the nation.
He exemplified the power of knowledge, humility, and tradition in an era where these values are
increasingly rare. His legacy is our guiding light.”
Dr. Kaputu was also instrumental in defending and promoting cultural expressions at a national and
international level. He played a key role in the recognition of Okuruuo (holy fire) by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage, ensuring its preservation for generations to come.
Various speakers and members of the Kaputu family at the event described Dr. Kaputu as a custodian of identity, a peacemaker, and a visionary educator whose commitment to storytelling healed divisions and restored dignity. From his pioneering days as an Otjiherero teacher to his long-standing career in broadcasting, he has consistently championed the unification of culture, identity, and history.
The unveiling of the Dr. Alexander Jarimbovandu Kaputu Studio stands as a testament to NBC’s
commitment to cultural preservation and its ongoing role in honouring those who have paved the way for a deeper national consciousness.
