The United States has carried out air strikes against militants linked to the Islamic State group in north-western Nigeria, where the group has been trying to establish a foothold. The US military said the strikes targeted camps run by the group in Sokoto state, near the border with Niger. US President Donald Trump said the Christmas Day strikes had been deadly and described the group as “terrorist scum”.

Namibia Water Corporation Ltd (NamWater) has announced a disruption to water supply affecting the City of Windhoek and areas along the Von Bach–Windhoek Pipeline.

The interruption follows a power supply failure at the Von Bach Main Booster Station after heavy rainfall experienced yesterday.

NamWater said the duration of the power outage and the timeline for the full restoration of normal water supply are not yet clear.

The corporation has urged customers in the affected areas to use available water sparingly to reduce the impact of the disruption until supply is restored.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform has prohibited the import of specific fried chicken products from South Africa.

The restriction covers all fried chicken products from Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), Nando’s and Hungry Lion.

A notice seen by the Windhoek Observer issued under the name of the ministry said the ban forms part of wider import restrictions linked to ongoing outbreaks of foot and mouth disease and avian influenza.

Under the current measures, all animals and animal products require a veterinary permit before entering Namibia.

The ministry has not indicated when the directive came into effect.

The West Africa Editors Society (WAES) on Monday criticised a ruling by Human Rights Court 2 in Accra, Ghana, saying it threatens press freedom and investigative journalism.

The court ruled against journalist Innocent Samuel Appiah after he was sued by businesswoman Cynthia Adjei over an investigation into her business dealings.

WAES said the matters raised in the investigation were of public interest. It warned that the judgment could intimidate journalists and discourage critical reporting.

The Ministry of International Relations and Trade says it will engage the United States government to seek clarity on a new pilot programme for visa bonds that would affect Namibian travellers.
The United States has introduced a temporary pilot programme requiring certain foreign nationals, including Namibians, to post a visa bond of up to US$15 000 (approximately N$250 000) as a condition for obtaining B-1/B-2 tourist and business visas.
On 17 December, the US government announced that the programme would take effect from next month for Namibian travellers.
The ministry said it will engage US authorities on the scope, duration and practical application of the programme, including how it will apply to Namibian citizens.
Namibia said the measure could affect travel for tourism, business and family visits between the two countries.

The Labour Court has recently overturned a ruling that blocked a former Triton Express (Pty) Ltd employee from pursuing an unfair dismissal case against Triton Express (Pty) Ltd.
Daniel Eli, a former driver’s assistant, was dismissed in August 2022 after a disciplinary hearing found that he reported for duty while under the influence of alcohol.

Eli referred the dispute to the Office of the Labour Commissioner, but Triton Express objected, arguing that he had not used the company’s internal appeal process.
An arbitrator agreed and dismissed the case for lack of jurisdiction.
On appeal, the Labour Court found that Eli was never properly informed of his right to appeal or how to do so.

The court also noted contradictions in the company’s disciplinary documents, including references to appeal procedures and institutions that do not exist in Namibia.
The court ruled that the arbitrator was wrong to decline jurisdiction.

The earlier ruling was set aside and the matter was sent back for fresh arbitration before a different arbitrator.

IMPORT FREEZE| The Namibia Revenue Agency (NamRA) has suspended Value-Added-Tax (VAT) import accounts for importers who failed to meet payment requirements.
The suspension was announced on Monday evening.
NamRA said the move follows earlier notices that required importers to settle deferred VAT amounts on their import accounts. Importers who did not comply will now have their VAT import accounts suspended and must pay VAT immediately at the point of entry for future imports.
NamRA strategic communications manager Tonateni Shidhudhu said the action is based on the Value-Added Tax Act, which allows the suspension or cancellation of VAT import accounts when payment conditions are not met.
“During the suspension period, importers will be required to make immediate payment for all future imports at customs clearance and settle any outstanding arrears,” Shidhudhu said.
He urged taxpayers to take the notice seriously and regularise their accounts to avoid disruptions to their import operations.
