‘Namibia’s long-term investor permit to address investor concerns’
STAFF WRITER

Namibia Investment Promotion Development Board (NIPD) says the newly introduced Employment Permit to Conduct Business (Investor Permit) will go a long way in addressing investor concerns and allow sustainable planning.
NIPDB Chief Executive Officer, Julia Muetudhana Namibia invited investors to apply for the long term and play a part in Namibia’s development agenda.
The NIPDB said the new permit will provide qualifying investors with a more streamlined and predictable process to establish and operate businesses in the country.

Barry appointed acting director of the Financial Intelligence Centre

STAFF WRITER
The Financial Intelligence Centre has appointed Zenobia Barry as Acting Director .
Her appointment is effective from 1 October 2026.
The appointment follows the reassignment of Bryan Eiseb by President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah as the ACC Director General from 1 October 2026.
In a statement released on Tuesday FIC said, “ Barry assumes the role at a momentous time for the centre to strengthen its institutional capacity, stakeholder collaboration, and regulatory
effectiveness, while supporting Namibia's broader framework for combating money
laundering, terrorist financing, and proliferation financing.”
Barry currently serves as General Manager responsible for the Legal, Policy and
Enforcement of the FIC and brings 31 years of professional experience.
She holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB, Honours) and a Bachelor of Arts in Law (BA
Law) from the University of the Western Cape.
She is admitted as a Legal Practitioner of the High Court of Namibia.

Namibia targets 1.8 million annual tourists by 2030

STAFF WRITER
Namibia is targeting to receive 1.8 million tourists annually while increasing employment opportunities from the sporting industry from 1% to at least 3.5% by 2030.
This was said by President Netumbo Nandi - Ndaitwah while officiating at the Creative Sport Tourism Expo in Windhoek on Tuesday
“ Our policy commitments are measurable. Under the National Development Plan (NDP6), we aim to increase the contribution of sport to employment from approximately 1% to 3.5% by 2030. In tourism,Namibia recorded 1,217,108 international tourist arrivals in 2025, compared with 1,257,093 in 2024 - a decline of 3.2 percent. Our target remains 1.8 million tourist arrivals by 2030,"Nandi- Ndaitwah said.
The President reiterated the need for cooperation between the tourism and sporting industry to improve their contribution to the overall Gross Domestic Product as well as creating jobs.

Stolen manhole covers to cost City of Windhoek N$1 million

VERIPUAMI KANGUMINE

The City of Windhoek is facing a more than N$1 million bill to replace about 180 manhole covers stolen or reported missing this year.

The City normally spends about N$500 000 a year replacing stolen or missing manhole covers, but the number targeted by thieves has increased, with cases reported in Katutura, Eros, Havana, Otjomuise and Hochland Park.

City of Windhoek spokesperson Lydia Amutenya told Namibia Business Review that the records show that approximately 180 manhole covers were reported stolen or missing during 2026.

Govt confirms talks with Ethiopian Airways over management , set up of Namibia Air

The Works and Transport Ministry has confirmed engaging Ethiopian Airlines with a bid to find a partner to launch the planned national airline, Namibia Air.
In a statement released on Tuesday Works and Transport Executive Director Jonas Sheelongo said,” The Ministry confirms that discussions with Ethiopian Airlines, as well as consultations with local aviation operators and other relevant stakeholders, are ongoing.”
Sheelongo said the engagements are ‘part of a comprehensive and open process to assess the most viable and sustainable model for operationalizing Namibia Air.’

Ethiopian Airlines seeks control of Namibia Air

TIRI MASAWI

Ethiopian Airlines is seeking management control of Namibia’s planned national airline, including the appointment of the chief executive officer, chief financial officer and head of maintenance, while Namibia is pushing for an equity partnership with the Ethiopian carrier.

The proposed arrangement, revealed in an internal Ministry of Works and Transport briefing to Minister Veikko Nekundi, emerged from meetings between the two sides in Addis Ababa on 21 and 22 August.

The Namibian delegation was led by Executive Director Jonas Sheelongo, who is also chairman of the Technical Committee for the National Airline. The delegation met Ethiopian Airlines chief executive officer Mesfin Tasew Bekele and senior management to discuss cooperation in establishing Namibia Air.

Ethiopian Airlines has agreed to explore a management contract and provide technical support, but has stopped short of committing to take a stake in Namibia Air.

Water crisis opens space for private sector investment, innovation – Ngurare

Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare has called for greater investment, innovation and private-sector participation in Namibia’s water and sanitation sector, saying the country must find ways to secure water for future generations.
Speaking at the opening of the first session of the 4th Junior National Council in Windhoek on Monday, Ngurare said achieving universal access to water, sanitation and hygiene would require more than government action.
“The government therefore carries a continuing responsibility to plan, invest and implement with urgency. But achieving universal access will require more than the government acting alone,” he said.
Ngurare said it requires cooperation among national government, regional councils, local authorities, communities, development partners, the private sector and civil society.
Ngurare said the investment challenge extends beyond building infrastructure to maintaining it, encouraging innovation, conserving water and ensuring responsible use.

IPC wants tighter safeguards in oil, gas local content policy

TIRI MASAWI

The Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) says Namibia’s Oil and Gas Local Content Policy must be tightened to ensure ordinary Namibians benefit from the emerging industry and to prevent politically connected individuals from benefiting at their expense.

IPC shadow minister of international relations and trade Rodney Cloete said the policy should make beneficial ownership disclosure mandatory for companies and their local partners to strengthen transparency and guard against potential corruption.

The policy, currently under review by the Office of the President, is expected to shape how companies employ Namibians, buy from local businesses, transfer skills and technology, and create ownership and business opportunities as billions of dollars in oil and gas investment take shape.
