Police in Otjozondjupa have detained a 58-year-old man linked to menacing threats targeting a state prosecutor in Grootfontein.

Community Liaison Officer and Police Spokesperson Maureen Mbeha verified the Monday incident. The man is charged with assault by threat and conspiracy to commit murder.

Senior Inspector Mbeha stated that the suspect allegedly delivered handwritten notes to the 40-year-old prosecutor, urging him to flee Grootfontein and alluding to a brutal Ondangwa attack that could befall him next.

That prior case involved prosecutor Justine Shiweda, who was shot in the legs and attacked with corrosive acid at her home last October reportedly for rejecting a N$100,000 bail bribe in the high-profile matter of imprisoned ex-officer Abner Mateus. She succumbed to her wounds earlier this month.

The threatening messages appeared at multiple sites, such as Grootfontein Police Station, the Crime Investigation Unit and a local guesthouse. Police investigations continue.

Justine Shiweda, the 30-year-old Regional Prosecutor from Ondangwa has died from severe injuries sustained in a brutal assault, Oshana Regional Commander Commissioner Naftal Sakaria confirmed. She passed away this morning at a Windhoek hospital, where she had been receiving specialized treatment since October 2025.

The attack took place on 17 October 2025 in Ondangwa. Authorities believe it was a targeted strike linked to a case Shiweda was prosecuting. Assailants allegedly shot her and doused her with a corrosive chemical, inflicting life-threatening wounds.

Police say charges against the suspects initially attempted murder will be upgraded to murder when the case returns to court, in line with Namibian legal protocols. Six suspects remain in custody as the investigation continues.

Shiweda’s family has been informed.

NASA Slams NSFAF Policy for Blocking Grade 11 Learners from Degree Funding

The National African Students Association (NASA) has raised concerns over the current Namibia Students Financial Assistance Fund (NSFAF) eligibility framework, which limits Grade 11 learners to diploma-level studies and below.

NASA argues that the restriction unfairly excludes academically qualified Grade 11 candidates from accessing subsidised funding for degree programmes, despite meeting institutional entry requirements.
The association has called on government to urgently review the policy to allow equal funding access for qualifying Grade 11 learners and to clearly communicate any changes to ensure transparency and fairness.
