Man fatally stabs his ex-girlfriend to death in Lagos, two years after their breakup

A young interior designer, Deborah Moses, popularly known as Deb’rah Porsche, was brutally murdered in her Lagos home late Wednesday night by her ex-boyfriend, months after their relationship ended. The incident has sparked widespread outrage among family, neighbors, and rights activists demanding justice.

According to a police officer who spoke to newsmen, the case, initially reported at Oko-Oba Division, has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, for further investigation.

The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, allegedly disguised himself as a dispatch rider to gain access to the estate where Deborah resided. When security personnel grew suspicious, he reportedly scaled the estate’s fence to reach her apartment. Sources revealed that the suspect first attempted to cause an explosion by cutting the cooking gas pipe outside Deborah’s home. When this failed, he broke into her apartment and stabbed her multiple times, leading to her death.

A relative of the victim disclosed that Deborah had ended the relationship over a year ago but faced ongoing threats from the suspect. “He refused to move on,” the relative said. “He kept saying things like, ‘If I don’t have you, nobody will. If I don’t marry you, blood will flow.’” The relative noted that Deborah, a recent National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) graduate, was focused on building her career and had been avoiding the suspect’s unwanted calls and advances.

Neighbors reportedly apprehended the suspect after the attack and handed him over to the police. He is currently in custody as authorities continue their investigation.

Activists and family members are calling for a thorough probe, urging that the case not be overlooked. “Deborah was only trying to find her feet when this tragedy struck,” her grieving sister said.

The incident has reignited discussions on domestic violence and the need for stronger protections for women in Nigeria. Authorities have yet to release further details as the investigation continues.

Nigerian Army Debunks False Recruitment Claims, Warns Against Fraudsters

The Nigerian Army has refuted social media reports claiming it is recruiting applicants for the 90th Regular Intake, labeling the advertisements as false and misleading. In a statement issued on Saturday by Captain AU Hammanga, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations Directorate of Recruitment, the Army urged the public to disregard the viral recruitment notices entirely.

Captain Hammanga emphasized that the Nigerian Army has not announced any ongoing recruitment and advised applicants to await official announcements through verified channels. “The Nigerian Army maintains a clean and clear website for all recruitment-related information,” the statement read, urging prospective applicants to rely only on credible sources to avoid falling victim to scams.

The Army also issued a stern warning to fraudsters exploiting the fake recruitment advertisements, stating they should desist or face consequences. “We remain committed to transparency and professionalism in all recruitment processes,” the statement added, cautioning the public against engaging with deceitful individuals or groups posing as recruitment agents.

The Nigerian Army reiterated its dedication to maintaining integrity in its recruitment processes and encouraged citizens to report any suspicious activities related to fraudulent recruitment schemes.

Nasir El-Rufai Urges South-East Nigerians, Especially Women, to Prioritize Voter Registration

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has called on residents of Nigeria’s South-East region, particularly women, to actively participate in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise. Speaking at an event in Imo State on Saturday, El-Rufai emphasized the importance of voter registration as a civic duty essential for democratic participation.

Addressing the audience, El-Rufai highlighted the South-East’s lag in voter registration compared to other regions of Nigeria. “Looking at the numbers of the continuous voter registry in Nigeria in the last two weeks, the South East, including Imo State, of course, are lagging behind the rest of Nigeria,” he stated. He specifically urged Igbo mothers, sisters, and daughters to lead efforts in encouraging eligible voters, particularly those aged 16 and above who will be 18 by the next election, to register.

“Because the governance of our country today is democratic, we elect our leaders – we don’t select them, we don’t appoint them. So voting is important. Registering to vote is a civic duty,” El-Rufai said. “This is not a political imperative. It is a civil duty, which, as a citizen, you must take advantage of.”

The former governor’s appeal comes as Nigeria prepares for upcoming elections, with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducting the CVR to ensure eligible citizens are registered to vote. El-Rufai’s call to action underscores the need for greater civic engagement in the South-East to strengthen democratic participation in the region.

Historic LGBTQ Catholic Pilgrimage Marks Milestone in Vatican’s Jubilee Year

In a groundbreaking moment for the Catholic Church, over 1,400 LGBTQ Catholics and their supporters from approximately 20 countries gathered in Rome this weekend for a pilgrimage, marking the first time such an event has been included in the official programme of the Church’s Jubilee holy year. Organized by La Tenda di Gionata, an Italian association advocating for greater inclusivity within the Church, the pilgrimage is being hailed as a significant step toward diversity and acceptance.

The pilgrims, who began their journey with a prayer vigil on Friday evening, participated in a Mass at the Church of the Gesu in central Rome on Saturday morning. Later that day, they joined millions of other pilgrims in walking through the Holy Door of Saint Peter’s Basilica, a traditional rite of passage during the Jubilee year. Among them was Yveline Behets, a 68-year-old transgender woman from Brussels, who completed a 130-kilometer (80-mile) trek along the ancient Via Francigena pilgrimage route with 30 other LGBTQ Catholics to reach Rome. Wearing a rainbow t-shirt symbolizing the LGBTQ community, Behets expressed her hope for greater “plurality” within the Church, noting that she has not always felt acknowledged by fellow Catholics. “We are not just outsiders who are sometimes welcomed; we are part of the same family,” she said.

The pilgrimage, while a historic inclusion, highlights ongoing tensions within the Catholic Church, which has historically viewed homosexual acts as contrary to its teachings on procreative sex and described same-sex relationships as “intrinsically disordered.” Hugo, a 35-year-old pilgrim from Quebec, Canada, who withheld his last name, described the event as “a really important signal” for fostering inclusion. He emphasized the need to break down barriers through mutual understanding, stating, “If everybody got to know everyone else, a lot of barriers would come down.” However, he acknowledged that “a lot of obstacles remain,” particularly for same-sex couples seeking the Church’s blessing for their marriages.

The late Pope Francis, who passed away in April 2025, had made significant efforts to open the Church to marginalized groups, including the LGBTQ community. His 2023 decision to allow priests to bless same-sex couples sparked fierce opposition, particularly from conservative factions in Africa. His successor, Pope Leo XIV, has reaffirmed the Church’s stance that marriage is a union between a man and a woman but has chosen not to reverse Francis’s ruling on blessings. Notably, the pilgrims will not have a private audience with Pope Leo XIV during this event.

Beatrice Sarti, a 60-year-old Italian mother from Bologna accompanying her gay son on the pilgrimage, underscored the need for a shift in mindset within the Church. A member of La Tenda di Gionata, Sarti highlighted the alienation felt by many LGBTQ Catholics, saying, “Many of our children no longer go to church because they are made to feel that they are wrong. That absolutely needs to change.” She called for comprehensive training for educators, seminarians, priests, and bishops to foster greater acceptance, acknowledging that such change will be “a very long process.”

The inclusion of the LGBTQ pilgrimage in the Jubilee programme is a historic acknowledgment of diversity within the Catholic Church, but it also underscores the long road ahead for full acceptance. As pilgrims walked through Rome’s sacred sites, their presence served as both a celebration of progress and a reminder of the challenges that remain in bridging divides within the global Catholic community.

MEDIA TOUR OF SCHOOL PROJECTS IN ABIA ENDS, AS STATE GOVERNMENT ASSURES OF TIMELY COMPLETION OF PROJECTS.

A 2-day intensive and comprehensive tour of ongoing construction, reconstruction, and renovation of 63 school projects in Abia State, which took place on Wednesday, September 3rd, and Friday, September 5th, has successfully ended.

To cover all the locations of the school projects, the pressmen divided themselves into 3 groups, with each visiting the locations of the schools in rural and urban areas of the 3 Senatorial Zones of the State.

Addressing the press men who called on him in his office after their two days tour of the school projects on Friday, the Abia State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Elder Goodluck Ubochi, while thanking the journalists for their proactive initiative and taking the pains to go to the rural and urban areas where the schools are located, said that it was the best approach to properly inform the general public about the ongoing redevelopment of schools in the State.

The commissioner who stressed that the State Government has nothing to hide as the Governor Alex Otti-led Abia State Government is a government rooted in transparency and accountability to the people said,

"I am convinced that the best approach will be for the gentlemen of the press to go around, see things for themselves, and tell the public the true position of things.

"I want to believe that you've seen these things by yourselves. So, that's just what we are doing, and hopefully, even now, more locations are being mapped out outside the 63 you've seen. More are being mapped out because we've already gotten the approval in principle," Elder Ubochi disclosed.

Speaking further, Elder Ubochi assured that a reasonable number of the schools currently undergoing construction and reconstruction would be completed before the resumption of schools later this month.

He explained that the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education had applied to retrofit 221 schools across the State but mapped out 53 schools initially and later increased it to 63 schools in the first phase.

"We had applied for 221 schools across the 17 LGAs to attend to, under our renovation and retrofitting of schools initiative. The initial plan was to address 221 schools, 10 primary schools from each LGA, and 3 secondary schools from each LGA, making it 13 for each LGA.

"We started by picking the ones that have lighter activity. We initially mapped out 51 schools to be addressed with direct labour. We decided to increase as the work progressed.

"At the moment, we have about 63 locations where different activities are ongoing in our public schools.

"I know that most of those schools are not yet completed, but we are making efforts to see that a reasonable number will be completed before the schools resume on the 22nd of September.

"I'm sure we ought to be satisfied with the level of progress being made in each of those locations. We are doing this by direct labour, and we have our reasons for that," Elder Ubochi stated.

Elder Ubochi further stated that lighting up the school environment is also a major project of the Ministry, adding that he is collaborating with the Ministry of Power and Public Utilities to make sure that those schools are lit up.

He equally informed them that the government has plans to provide security in the schools when completed.
