Make una help judge this case abeg!
This morning, on arriving at my favorite restaurant to have my breakfast, I noticed that the couple who had the restaurant were in a heated argument. As I sat and watch things unfold, I noticed one of her aids, an aged woman in her late 70's, was the centre of discussion.
She was alleged to have reported late to work, only to discover, to her astonishment, that her 'madam' had recruited another woman to replace her.
As she stood motionless, gazing towards the floor, her madam continued to yell. "Agwala m gi si ebe a puo. Achoghikwam ka ndi mmadu bia kpewere anyi", to which her husband promptly replied, "onweghi ebe o na-aga. Ya buru nne gi, iga eji otu a chuo ya?".
As the altercation between the couple ensued, customers in the restaurant got divided along varying views. Some held that the woman, having abstained from work for about a week due to a yet to be disclosed reason, has no excuse whatsoever, to report to work late today.
Others argued that the madam ought to know beforehand that such issues of late coming are bound to arise, considering the age of that woman, the present weather (due to the rain), among other factors. So dismissing the woman that way, according to them, will only leave her traumatized and may adversely affect her health, considering the present economic situation in the country.
While all these were on going, the aged woman remained motionless, staring at the floor. I learnt that she had repeatedly begged her madam whom she addresses as "aunty" all to no avail.
I thought about the whole scenario for a while, and having finished my meal, I opted to take my leave without saying a word, to avoid taking sides.
When you're working in any establishment, it is imperative that you adhere strictly to their modus operandi. If it is your personal business, then you are at liberty to run it the way you like. Turning up late to work kills most businesses gradually, and no serious businessman or woman would tolerate anyone trying to set such precedence.
Looking at the aged woman, you can't help but feel pity for her. She had been without a helper and was only managing to feed from this menial job. Her madam even revealed that she gives her additional #800 daily, which is not part of her salary, just to help her.
Now that her madam has already recruited another worker in her place, I want us to judge this rationally. Should her madam pardon, re-instate her and discharge the new person, or should the old woman be dismissed entirely? What is your take on this?
