There’s a little girl in my neighborhood called Princess and she’s five-year-old. She shares a very close bond with another little boy, Moses, who’s also 5, and he lives just across the street from us.
As young as they are, their friendship is so strong that we playfully refer to them as husband and wife.
They walk to school together with her older sister, play together, and even after school, he walks her to her house before going back to his.
I find their friendship so funny because when I was 5, I use to fear and avoid girls but children of this generation… only God can can!
On her own, Princess is quiet but once Moses is around, they can shout the entire neighborhood down
Today, they’re playing, and the next minute, they’re fighting and one of them is crying, yet, the very next day, they’re back to being playmates as if nothing happened.
I have labeled their relationship toxic because this was how my ex was until I packed and refused to give her my new address
One fateful morning, tragedy struck our compound
Princess’ father passed away after a brief illness.
We woke up to screams from their house, at first, nobody came out, out of fear. We thought it was robbers until Princess mother began screaming his name and shouting, “wake up, wake up ọkọ mi!”
After his body was deposited at the morgue, family and close friendships started going in to visit the mom. She was inconsolable.
Amidst the chaos, Moses arrived at her doorstep, completely ignorant of the situation.
I and some of the neighbors were outside the house and as soon as we saw him, we immediately told him to leave, but stubborn as he is, he refused and went to knock on their door.
Few minutes later Princess opened the door and as soon as she saw him, she told him to go away
He asked why
She said my daddy just died
He asked when
She said last night
He said is he in heaven?
She said she doesn’t know but she’ll ask her mummy when she stops crying
He said do you want to play hide and see
