Churches are meant to be places of refuge, compassion, and care not institutions that place a price on basic human needs. Collecting a token or fee for using the restroom undermines the core mission of the church, which is to serve and support the physical and spiritual well-being of all people.
Using the restroom is a fundamental human necessity, not a privilege. Charging a token even a small one
can create unnecessary barriers, especially for the poor, the homeless, children, the elderly, and those with health conditions. For many, the church may be one of the few safe spaces available, and placing a cost on such an essential service sends a message of exclusion rather than welcome.
Moreover, scripture and Christian teachings emphasize hospitality, generosity, and love for neighbor. In Matthew 25:35-40, Jesus praises those who cared for others' basic needs feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, welcoming the stranger. Denying or charging for restroom access stands in direct contrast to this teaching.
If maintenance or cleanliness is a concern, the church community can explore other solutions such as voluntary donations, designated cleaning schedules, or support from church funds. But placing a physical price on compassion weakens the witness of the church and may discourage those most in need from seeking help or even attending worship.
The church should lead by exampl offering dignity, care, and grace without charge.
