TEXT: EPHESIANS 3:14-20
TOPIC: PRAYER AS SUPPORT FOR GROWTH

EPHESIANS 3:14-20 NIV

14:For this reason I kneel before the Father,

15:from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name.

16:I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being,

17:so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love,

18:may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ,

19:and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

20:Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,

PRAYER AS SUPPORT FOR GROWTH

As advanced believers in Christ, especially if we're involved in evangelism, it should be counted a privilege and responsibility to support younger ones in the faith to grow as well.

Paul acknowledges that he was privileged to be a recipient of the mystery of salvation through faith in Christ. He was also commissioned to preach the gospel to the Gentiles, including the Ephesian converts.

He, therefore, had the duty to pray for them. It should be our habit to pray for younger believers in Christ.

Paul desired to see that Christ dwell in the hearts of the Ephesian believers by faith and be rooted in love.

QUESTION: How much prayer do you offer to support, other believers, especially young converts in Christ?

PRAYER: Give me the passion for fervent prayers for the growth of the Church of Christ, in Jesus' name. Amen.

TEXT: EPHESIANS 2:11-18
TOPIC: ALIENS TO BLESSINGS WITHOUT CHRIST

EPHESIANS 2:11-18 NIV

11:Therefore, remember that formerly you who are Gentiles by birth and called “uncircumcised” by those who call themselves “the circumcision” (which is done in the body by human hands)—

12:remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world.

13:But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ.

14:For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility,

15:by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace,

16:and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility.

17:He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near.

18:For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.

ALIENS TO BLESSINGS WITHOUT CHRIST

The Ephesians were Gentiles who had no relationship with the Jews before Christ’s first coming.

The Jews were chosen by grace to be God’s own people by their covenant relationship with Abraham, whom God referred to as “my friend” (Isaiah 41:8).

Abraham was the biological progenitor of the Jews in the Old Testament.

All other nations, as Gentiles, were strangers to all of God’s privileges.

But a change of status came when Jesus appeared to bring all men unto Himself through their faith in Him.

Verses 14-18 show that in Christ, all Jewish believers in Christ, including Ephesians and Nigerian believers, are one in Christ.

QUESTION: Are you still an alien or stranger to Christ's unlimited spiritual blessings?

PRAYER: Remove from me, dear Lord, whatever would make me alien to Your abundant blessings, in Christ Jesus' name. Amen.

TEXT: EPHESIANS 2:1-10
TOPIC: DEAD IN SIN BUT ALIVE IN CHRIST

Before man's conversion, he walked according to the world system and the prince of the power of the air, which works in the children of disobedience.

Anyone who walks in disobedience to God’s word is by nature a child of wrath, fulfilling the desires of the flesh. But God's mercy was manifested by His death on Calvary (John 3:16).

Paul emphasizes this truth to the Roman believers: “But God demonstrated His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).

The abundant life given to believers is for good works, which God had ordained.

QUESTION:
Are you alive in Christ or dead in sin?

PRAYER:
Father, deliver me from a life of consistent sin and let Your grace avail for me, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

TEXT: EPHESIANS 1:15-23
TOPIC: POWER FOR BELIEVERS SIMILAR TO THE RESURRECTION

EPHESIANS 1:15-23 NIV

15:For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God’s people,

16:I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers.

17:I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.

18:I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people,

19:and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength

20:he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms,

21:far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.

22:And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church,

23:which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.

POWER FOR BELIEVERS SIMILAR TO THE RESURRECTION

Paul was very enthusiastic about the way the Ephesians embraced Christ and took time to support and nurture them with prayer and careful explanation of the superior power they possessed in Christ (vs.15-16). Ephesus was a city full of idolatry with different gods being worshipped.

Paul endeavored to quicken their understanding of their new status in Christ and that they should no longer be afraid of their backgrounds. He prayed that God “may give unto them the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him” (vs.17).

Man is always afraid of unknown powers that can ruin their lives because they have no assurance of greater power.

Paul made them understand ‘the exceeding greatness of God’s power towards them the moment they place their faith in Christ.’

QUESTION: Do you believe that Christ’s power is available for you now more than ever before?

PRAYER: Give me the understanding to know and trust that Your power is always available for me to live my life with the boldness of the Spirit, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

TEXT: MATTHEW 20:1-16
TOPIC: SALVATION IS BY GRACE ALONE

MATTHEW 20:1-16 NIV

1:“For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard.

2:He agreed to pay them a denarius for the day and sent them into his vineyard.

3:“About nine in the morning he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing.

4:He told them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.’

5:So they went. “He went out again about noon and about three in the afternoon and did the same thing.

6:About five in the afternoon he went out and found still others standing around. He asked them, ‘Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?’

7:“‘Because no one has hired us,’ they answered. “He said to them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard.’

8:“When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.’

9:“The workers who were hired about five in the afternoon came and each received a denarius.

10:So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius.

11:When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner.

12:‘These who were hired last worked only one hour,’ they said, ‘and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.’

13:“But he answered one of them, ‘I am not being unfair to you, friend. Didn’t you agree to work for a denarius?

14:Take your pay and go. I want to give the one who was hired last the same as I gave you.

15:Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?’

16:“So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”

SALVATION IS BY GRACE ALONE

It is clear that this parable is not about unfairly paying someone who worked eight hours the same amount as someone who has worked for only two hours. Christ is teaching about salvation.

Today, there are many people in the Church who feel that they are more important than others because of the sacrifices they make or through the leadership positions they occupy.

Christ teaches us that the reward for all believers is eternal life. We are all saved by grace through faith (Eph. 2:8, 9).

Salvation is neither based on merit (as taught by Islamic theology) nor the years one has spent working for God.

All of those who have accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour will have eternal life, regardless of the time they were saved or how much time they have spent in Christian service.

QUESTION: Are you jealous of new converts?

PRAYER: Help me, O Lord, to serve You in appreciation of Your great love for me. Amen.

TOPIC: THE IMPORTANCE OF BASIC DOCTRINES FOR FAMILIES

DEUTERONOMY 6:1-13 NIV

1:These are the commands, decrees and laws the Lord your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess,

2:so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the Lord your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life.

3:Hear, Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, promised you.

4:Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.

5:Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

6:These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.

7:Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

8:Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.

9:Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

10:When the Lord your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you—a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build,

11:houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant—then when you eat and are satisfied,

12:be careful that you do not forget the Lord, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

13:Fear the Lord your God, serve him only and take your oaths in his name.

THE IMPORTANCE OF BASIC DOCTRINES FOR FAMILIES

Today is children's day. This is a day dedicated by the Federal Government of Nigeria to honour and celebrate our children.

Yesterday’s text (Math. 18:1-11) demonstrates Christ's love for children.

In this text, the writer emphasizes the importance of teaching and obedience in living in the Promised Land. The future of any family, nation or Church depends on their children.

The author of Deuteronomy emphasizes the fact that doctrinal training for families is very crucial. The word of God should be on display not only in our mouth but in the hearts of children if we expect them to follow the Lord.

Today’s message is apt because the word of God is the foundation for the family. We need to follow the Old Testament example of teaching, loving, caring and investing in our children. Christian parents should not fail to impart their faith in their children.

QUESTION: As a Christian, what do you teach your children?

PRAYER: Help us, O Lord, to see the need to teach our little ones basic Christian doctrines, in Jesus name. Amen.

TEXT: MATTHEW 18:1-11
TOPIC: WHO IS THE GREATEST IN THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN?

MATTHEW 18:1-11 NIV

1:At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”

2:He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them.

3:And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

4:Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

5:And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.

6:“If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.

7:Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to stumble! Such things must come, but woe to the person through whom they come!

8:If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire.

9:And if your eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.

10:“See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.

11:KJV:For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost.

WHO IS THE GREATEST IN THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN?

In today's text, the disciples ask Jesus, “who then is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven?” (vs. 1).

He answered by using a little child as example. The disciples’ main desire was to be above others, just as it is the case in Christendom today.

This is because we think that it implies power, influence, status, recognition and respect.

Christ taught the disciples that the most significant quality is found in the character of children. We should know that 'little ones' in verse 6 does not refer to children alone because, as new believers, we equally fall into this category.

Therefore, we must be careful about what we teach them. This is the warning in verse ten.

QUESTION: According to today's text, what are the qualities of greatness and leadership?

PRAYER: O Lord, give us the strength to become like children by renouncing any notions of self in our lives.

TEXT: MATTHEW 17:24-27
TOPIC: IS THE GOSPEL OFFENSIVE?

MATTHEW 17:24-27 NIV

24:After Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma temple tax came to Peter and asked, “Doesn’t your teacher pay the temple tax?”

25:“Yes, he does,” he replied. When Peter came into the house, Jesus was the first to speak. “What do you think, Simon?” he asked. “From whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxes—from their own children or from others?”

26:“From others,” Peter answered. “Then the children are exempt,” Jesus said to him.

27:“But so that we may not cause offense, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours.”

IS THE GOSPEL OFFENSIVE?

In Jewish law, the temple tax is collected from every male twenty years old and above for the upkeep of the temple. Jesus asked Peter what he thinks about this.

Peter answered from others. Jesus said that if it is from others, then the disciples are exempted.

But this didn't go down well with the Jews: They felt His response was offensive. Brethren, we Christians offended other people in many ways (vs. 25).

Some of those ways are necessary while others are not. The gospel itself is offensive.

Why? This is because it tells people that they are sinners in need of salvation. So, whenever we preach the gospel, we 'offend' our listeners.

QUESTION: Are we still preaching Christ's core gospel which is offensive or are we preaching another gospel that tickles the ears of the listeners?

PRAYER: Help us, dear Lord, to continually preach the offensive and undiluted gospel in this generation and at all times, in Jesus' name. Amen.

TEXT: MATTHEW 17:1-13
TOPIC: OLD TESTAMENT AUTHENTICATION OF CHRIST'S MESSIAHSHIP.

Matthew 17:1-13 (NIV)

[1] After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves.

[2] There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light.

[3] Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.

[4] Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”

[5] While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”

[6] When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified.

[7] But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.”

[8] When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.

[9] As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, “Don’t tell anyone what you have seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”

[10] The disciples asked him, “Why then do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”

[11] Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things.

[12] But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.”

[13] Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist.

OLD TESTAMENT AUTHENTICATION OF CHRIST'S MESSIAHSHIP

Matthew reveals that the Old Testament can be used to prove the identity Christ as the Messiah. Prophet Jeremiah said that when we follow and call on God, He will show us great and unsearchable things (Jer.33:3).

Here, we see Jesus, Peter, James and John the brothers of James going to a mountain (vs.1) to have a taste of Jesus' glory about which He told them (cf. Matt. 16:27-28). Moses and Elijah also appear. This is a confirmation that Jesus is far above these two Prophets.

Now that we have a confirmation from the prophets, we should let the world know that Christ is indeed the anointed Messiah.

QUESTION: Do you use every available opportunity to share the good news that Christ is the Saviour?

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank You for revealing Yourself to me. May many more people acknowledge You through me. Amen!

TEXT: MATTHEW 16:13-20
TOPIC: YOU ARE THE CHRIST, THE SON OF THE LIVING GOD

MATTHEW 16:13-20 NIV

13:When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”

14:They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

15:“But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

16:Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

17:Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.

18:And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.

19:I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

20:Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.

YOU ARE THE CHRIST, THE SON OF THE LIVING GOD

The Jewish leaders know the law of the prophets and the prophecies but refuse to confess Jesus as the Messiah.

In today's text, Jesus confronted His disciples with this crucial question: "Who do people say the son of man is?" (vs.13).

Just as in Jesus' day, people today see Jesus as a miracle worker and great teacher. Some other religions see Him as Grand Master.

Here, Jesus wants us to know if His disciples have a better understanding beyond some of the perverted views above. But notice the disciples' silence until Peter came up with the superb answer.

This bold statement about Christ opened a new chapter for the work of the Church because this is a true confession.

Christ is the Son of the living God, Christ the Saviour is God Himself who came down in human form to take our death upon himself. Praise the Lord!

QUESTION: Do you also understand Christ beyond the common and worldly views of Him?

PRAYER: O God, please reveal to me the person of Your Son Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

TEXT: MATTHEW 15:21-28
TOPIC: HUMILITY AND PERSISTENCE IN FAITH

MATTHEW 15:21-28 NIV

21:Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon.

22:A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.”

23:Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.”

24:He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.”

25:The woman came and knelt before him. “Lord, help me!” she said.

26:He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”

27:“Yes it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”

28:Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.

HUMILITY AND PERSISTENCE IN FAITH

The Canaanite woman saw in Jesus a merciful miracle worker who could solve her problem.

At first, Jesus appeared not to hear her plea as He remained silent. That did not discourage her. Over the ages, saints and even believers today have faced situations where God seemed to be silent.

Many have missed their blessings because they quit praying too quickly. We should learn from the woman’s humility and persistence.

Jesus taught and urged us to keep seeking, keep asking and keep knocking. This woman understood this principle, as contained in Matthew 7:7-8.

The disciples’ objection could have discouraged her, but she carried on in all humility and persistence until she got help.

QUESTION: What objections are discouraging you from waiting upon the Lord concerning the problems in your life?

PRAYER: Oh Lord, help me to continue praying with humility and persistence until new things happen in my life, in Jesus' name. Amen.
