Team Ogun Dominates Cricket at National Sports Festival, Secures Semifinal Spots in Both Categories

Team Ogun State has stamped its authority on the cricket events at the ongoing 22nd National Sports Festival (Gateway Games), with both the male and female teams storming into the semifinals of the T20 competition after impressive performances on Thursday.

The Ogun male team, led by captain and national team star Sesan Adedeji, delivered a commanding 9-wicket victory over Team Zamfara to secure their semifinal berth. After bowling out Zamfara for a paltry 73 runs in 20 overs, the hosts chased down the target in just 5 overs, finishing at 74/1—a statement win that erased the disappointment of their earlier technical loss to Team Kaduna.

With this result, Ogun now awaits their semifinal opponent, with a potential blockbuster rematch against Kaduna on the cards.

Adedeji, exuding confidence, reiterated his team’s gold medal ambition, saying:
"We’re in a strong position now. After Kaduna, no one has better points than us. We’re taking it one game at a time—this win is done, and we’re giving our all in the semifinals. The gold is our target."

Not to be outdone, the Ogun women’s team maintained their flawless run, securing back-to-back wins in the group stage. After a 4-wicket triumph over Ebonyi on Tuesday, they crushed Gombe by 8 wickets on Thursday, showcasing their depth and firepower.

With both teams firing on all cylinders, Ogun State is now poised for a historic double podium finish. Cricket enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating a potential golden sweep for the Gateway State as the competition heats up.

Speaking at the event, the governor noted that the Torch, which traversed the states of the federation after it was handed over to the President of the National Sports Commission by President Bola Tinubu, embodies the collective aspirations of all Nigerians.

He said: "The Unity Torch, commencing its journey across the federation in March, symbolizes more than the forthcoming Gateway Games. It embodies our collective aspirations as a nation where diversity strengthens our unity and where our youths are empowered to shine on the global stage.

He noted that apart from fostering an environment where collaboration, friendship, and mutual respect flourish, it also promotes unity in diversity, which are the core objectives of the sports festival.

"These are the core objectives of the National Sports Festival, which was established in 1973 to promote unity among Nigerians and reaffirm commitment to sportsmanship, resilience, and national cohesion," the governor added.

With the reception of the Torch, Governor Abiodun stated that it reinforced the state's renewed dedication to national unity, youth development, and celebration of rich diversity through sports.

"Hosting this prestigious event for the second time, Ogun State is indeed humbled and honoured to receive the Torch of Unity. We are prepared to showcase a vibrant culture, exceptional hospitality, and the extraordinary talents of our athletes," he submitted.
