They made this known during a training programme for tomato farmers by the Institutional-Based Research Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) grant project on participatory assessment of good agricultural practices on growth and yield of tomato in collaboration with the Agricultural Media Resources and Extension Centre (AMREC), Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB). In his paper presentation, Dr. Olatunbosun Soetan noted that there is low awareness and knowledge of good agricultural practices among tomato farmers.

He called for increased awareness and training of tomato farmers in this area for sustainable production of tomato and the need to scale up the project for commercial farming in Nigeria, adding that this would encourage the production of safe tomato crop for human consumption. On his part, Dr. James Fadeyi reiterated that to be successful in the integrated pest management, farmers must have basic knowledge on key pests, diseases and weeds, which could affect crops, stressing that maximum efforts must be made to prevent problems associated with pests, diseases and weeds.

FUNAAB don calls for better goat management strategies

The 98th Inaugural Lecturer of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Ogun State, Prof. James Daramola, has called for an improvement in goat management strategies to enhance their welfare and production.

Prof. Daramola made the call while delivering the lecture titled: 'Stubbornness and the Goat: A Romantic Paradox', held at the Oluwafemi Balogun Ceremonial Building of FUNAAB. He added that adequate care, feeding, and shelter in a friendly environment that is attractive and embraced by humans, would limit the mismatch between the trials that goats have developed to survive in their natural habitat and the behaviour they express with humans. "Stubbornness and the goat, exemplify a romantic paradox and provide a fascinating perspective on understanding the goat and its relationship with humans. Whether viewed positively or negatively, goats continue to fascinate our imaginations and highlight the complexity and interconnectedness of our world", he added.

The don, who is of the Department of Animal Physiology, College of Animal Science and Livestock Reproduction (COLANIM) of the University, advocated for the establishment of cryo centres in the six geo-political zones of Nigeria by the Federal Government, adding that the centres, with a mandate to process and cryo-preserve semen in different doses, would deliver frozen semen preferably to farmers' doorsteps through trained Mobile Artificial Insemination Technicians, "as this will serve as a source of internal generated revenue for the nation". He, however, said that if uncontrolled, neglected, and uncatered for, literally in the next breath, the goat could become the catalyst "that pushes people into a hole of despair".

Imbibe Awo’s legacy, says don

A social studies scholar, Dr. Adekunle Adediran, has called on Nigerian leaders to imbibe the legacy of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, a former Premier of the Western Region in Nigeria, in shaping the country’s political and socio-economic landscapes, in order to contribute to Nigerian cultural heritage, national development, and the promotion of education.

He made this call while delivering the first Academic Lecture Series of the School of Secondary Education (Arts and Social Sciences), Federal College of Education, Osiele, Abeokuta, Ogun State, with the topic: 'Reappraisal of Social Studies for Recreation of Robotic Technology of a Prominent African Ancestral Figure Towards Preservation of Cultural Heritage in Nigeria'. The event was held at the Political Science Hall of the institution. He noted that late Awolowo remained one of the most influential figures in the Nigerian history and an exemplary leader whose legacy continues to shape the cultural, political, and educational landscape of the country.

"Cultural heritage serves as a critical cornerstone of identity, unity, and historical continuity in any society, as it encapsulates the values, beliefs, and practices that define a people, ensuring the transmission of these elements across generations", he added. Adediran said the reappraisal of social studies for the recreation of robotic technology, particularly in the context of a prominent African ancestral figure such as Awolowo, offers a unique and innovative approach to preserving and presenting Nigeria's rich cultural heritage. He said, "Social Studies is not merely an academic discipline, but a transformative tool that equips individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate and contribute positively to society".

The lecturer noted that a robotic Awolowo could serve as a symbol of the power of African ingenuity and technological advancement, saying by recreating an African historical figure through robotics, "Nigeria can position itself as a hub that values and actively engages with its cultural heritage. Education should involve the use of modern technologies, including robotics to teach social studies, and education institutions should collaborate with technical experts, engineers, and developers to create accurate and engaging robotic representations of key African figures", he stated.

ASUSS leader queries proposed 12-4 system of education

The Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), Ogun State, Comrade (Dr.) Felix Agbesanwa has reiterated that any decision taken at the end of the meeting between the Federal Government with the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPPS) on the proposal by the Minister of Education to extend basic education to 12 years would be null and void, stating that the union is averse to it.

Comrade Agbesanwa made known while featuring on the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Ogun State, FUNAAB Radio 89.5FM live interactive programme, Boiling Point. He said that the Nigeria Union of Teachers cannot speak for secondary schools, saying they do not know what secondary school teachers are passing through. The Ogun State ASUSS Chairman queried the proposed 12-4 system of education, charging the Federal Government to learn from the problem of the past. Agbesanwa, however, urged policy makers in the country to be humane and be intellectual before they speak out, saying any mistake they make now would affect lives in the future.
