A renowned Plant Pathologist from the Department of Crop Protection, College of Plant Science and Crop Production (COLPLANT), Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Ogun State, Prof. Akinola Popoola, has made a case for capacity building for elite farmers through training programmes on modern farming techniques and sustainable farming practices, saying that every research should have a component on information dissemination to the end-users.
Delivering the University's 103rd Inaugural Lecture titled: 'Biotechnology and Plant Pathology: An Eclectic Approach to Plant Disease Management', held at the Oluwafemi Balogun Ceremonial Building of FUNAAB, Prof. Popoola said public-private partnerships should also be strengthened through effective collaboration between government agencies, research bodies, and private organisations to facilitate technology transfer to farmers.
He emphasised that researchers in plant science should, as a matter of personal development, intimate themselves with modern methods of monitoring and identifying the health state of crop of interest, while calling for active collaboration between different experts in the field of science and agriculture for a comprehensive investigation of all that is needed for an enduring solution. The 103rd Inaugural Lecturer advocated for a shift in the mode of funds disbursement for research activities, lamenting that the present system of retaining a percentage of the approved grant by funding agencies "is detrimental to the timely ex*****on of the project".
