A TRIBUTE TO TWO BROADCAST LEGENDS:
PRINCE ELIJAH ADEGBENGA ADEBOYE & ALHAJI CHIEF TOBA OPALEYE

Today, 30th April, stands as a solemn yet profoundly significant date in the annals of broadcasting history in Nigeria. It is a day that reminds us not only of loss, but of legacy — a legacy etched in voices that once commanded the airwaves and shaped the very foundation upon which many of us now stand.

Twenty-three years ago, the curtain fell on the remarkable life of Prince Elijah Adegbenga Adeboye, a man whose voice, wit and uncommon creativity redefined entertainment broadcasting. Three years later, on this same date, fate again called home another giant — Alhaji Chief Toba Opaleye (Oppy Baba) — a broadcaster of immense depth cultural richness and commanding presence.

These two icons were not just contemporaries; they were twin pillars of a golden era in Nigerian broadcasting. Together, they set the pace, defined standards and dominated the airwaves with a rare blend of professionalism, originality and cultural intelligence. Their voices were not merely heard — they were felt. Their words did not just entertain — they educated, inspired and united.

As Chairman of Ogun State FIBAN — an association whose roots and vision are deeply connected to the pioneering spirit of Adeboye and Opaleye — I speak not just from a place of leadership, but from a place of personal gratitude and historical responsibility.

Funwontan was more than a legend to many of us; he was a pathfinder. He possessed a rare gift for discovering and nurturing talent. I am a living testament to that grace. At a time when many overlooked potential, he saw possibility. Where there was uncertainty, he instilled confidence. He did not just build a career — he built people. His influence continues to echo in the voices, styles and courage of broadcasters across generations.

In the same breath, we remember Oppy Baba — a master craftsman of the microphone, whose depth of knowledge, cultural pride and commanding delivery made him a household name. He stood shoulder to shoulder with Adeboye in shaping a broadcast era that remains unmatched in authenticity and impact. Together, they were the standard. Together, they were the voice of the people.

Their departures left a void, but their legacies filled it with purpose. Today, as practitioners in this noble profession, we are beneficiaries of their sacrifices, their innovations and their unwavering commitment to excellence.

On this day of remembrance, we do not mourn as those without hope; we celebrate as those privileged to have witnessed greatness. We reflect on lives well lived, voices well used and legacies that time cannot erase.

To Prince Elijah Adegbenga Adeboye (Funwontan) — thank you for seeing light in others and giving it room to shine.

To Alhaji Chief Toba Opaleye (Oppy Baba) — thank you for defining excellence and preserving the soul of our culture through the airwaves.

You both may be gone from our sight, but never from our story.

May your souls continue to rest in perfect peace, while your legacies continue to guide, inspire and lead us.

Signed,
Chief Olalekan A. Shoyinka (Ayinla Egba)
Chairman, Ogun State FIBAN

OGUN FIBAN CONGRATULATES SWEET 107.1 FM ON ITS 10TH ANNIVERSARY

The Leadership and members of the Ogun State Chapter of the Freelance and Independent Broadcasters’ Association of Nigeria (FIBAN) heartily congratulate Distinguished Senator Olugbenga Onaolapo Obadara, Proprietor; the Executive Director, Elder Eddy Aina; as well as the Management and Staff of Sweet 107.1 FM, Abeokuta, on the remarkable occasion of the station’s 10th Year Anniversary.

In a statement signed by the Chairman of Ogun FIBAN, Chief Olalekan A. Shoyinka (Ayinla Egba), and made available by the Publicity Secretary, Comrade Olusoji Akindiya (Okanlomo), the Association described the milestone as a testament to resilience, visionary leadership, and unwavering commitment to excellence in broadcasting.

Ogun FIBAN commends Sweet 107.1 FM as Nigeria’s pioneer Leadership and Entrepreneur Radio Station, noting that its establishment a decade ago marked a turning point in the evolution of broadcasting in Ogun State and beyond. The station has, over the years, distinguished itself as a platform for innovation, capacity building, and the promotion of entrepreneurial and leadership ideals through quality programming.

The Association particularly applauds the station for its immense contributions to the growth and development of freelance and independent broadcasters. Sweet 107.1 FM provided a rare opportunity for many practitioners to discover, nurture, and showcase their innate talents at a time when access to the airwaves was constrained by various systemic challenges. Today, many of such broadcasters have grown into respected voices and household names across the media landscape—a legacy that the station should be proud of.

It is on record that the emergence of Sweet 107.1 FM served as a form of liberation for numerous independent broadcasters who, prior to its establishment, faced intimidation, marginalization, and limited opportunities within the industry. By opening its doors and embracing inclusivity, the station created a mutually beneficial ecosystem that has since continued to thrive.

Ogun FIBAN proudly identifies as a critical stakeholder in the station’s journey and impactful presence within the state. The Association expresses deep appreciation for the opportunities extended to its members, especially during the formative years of the station, to contribute meaningfully through rich and engaging content. This support, which has been sustained over the years, remains a cornerstone of the cordial relationship between both bodies.

The Association also acknowledges that the past decade has not been without its challenges. However, it is both commendable and inspiring that Sweet 107.1 FM has weathered turbulent periods that have claimed many media establishments. Ogun FIBAN pays special tribute to the Executive Director, Elder Eddy Aina, whose exemplary leadership, experience, and wisdom have played a pivotal role in stabilizing and steering the station toward continued relevance and growth.

Furthermore, the vision and commitment of the Proprietor, Distinguished Senator Olugbenga Onaolapo Obadara, are worthy of recognition. His investment in a media platform that prioritizes leadership discourse and entrepreneurial development has not only enriched the broadcasting space but has also contributed significantly to societal advancement.

As Sweet 107.1 FM celebrates a decade of impactful broadcasting, Ogun FIBAN urges the Management and Staff to remain steadfast in upholding professionalism, ethical standards, and innovative programming that will continue to inform, educate, and inspire the public.

The Association reaffirms its unalloyed support and commitment to strengthening the existing partnership for the advancement of broadcasting and the empowerment of media practitioners in Ogun State.

Once again, we congratulate Sweet 107.1 FM on this laudable achievement and wish the station many more years of excellence, growth, and outstanding service to humanity.

Ogun FIBAN Pledges Support for Emergency Services Awareness Campaign

The Ogun State Chapter of the Freelance and Independent Broadcasters’ Association of Nigeria (FIBAN) has expressed its readiness to partner with the Ogun State Ambulance and Emergency Services (OGSAES) in promoting public awareness of emergency response services across the state.

This was contained in a formal response issued by the Chairman of Ogun FIBAN, Chief Olalekan A. Shoyinka (Ayinla Egba), following a request from OGSAES seeking media collaboration to amplify its life-saving initiatives.

According to the association, it acknowledges and appreciates the decision of the emergency services department to engage FIBAN, describing the move as timely and in the collective interest of public health and safety. The association also commended OGSAES for its commitment to saving lives, noting its significant interventions in emergency situations, including responses to road traffic accidents and other critical incidents.

Chief Shoyinka stated that Ogun FIBAN, as a professional body of independent broadcasters, is committed to supporting initiatives that promote community development and public enlightenment. He noted that the association would offer its support as part of its corporate social responsibility, particularly in creating awareness about OGSAES services and emergency response protocols.

He, however, explained that members of the association are independent practitioners who procure airtime for their programmes, and as such, while support would be given, certain services may attract subsidized rates rather than being entirely free.

The Chairman further disclosed that the association is willing to facilitate live studio interviews and interactive programmes for representatives of OGSAES across various platforms operated by its members statewide. He noted that this would provide an opportunity to further educate residents on the agency’s services, including its emergency contact line and other critical programmes such as the Rural Emergency Services and Maternal Transport (RESMAT) initiative.

He urged the agency to sustain communication with the association, assuring that Ogun FIBAN remains open to future collaborations that will enhance public awareness and contribute to the safety and well-being of residents.

The proposed partnership is expected to strengthen ongoing efforts to build a more responsive emergency system while fostering a safer and more informed society in Ogun State.

BIRTHDAY TRIBUTE TO A COURAGEOUS VOICE AND UNWAVERING LEADER

Ogun FIBAN celebrate the enduring legacy of a man whose voice has become a moral compass in our society — Alhaji Moruf Adegboyega (Omo Odo Agba), the revered Okanlomo Itoku and Araba Baaroyin Orile-Igbore.

Alhaji, your life stands as a powerful testament to courage, integrity and service. As a broadcast icon and an exceptional investigative journalist, you have consistently chosen the difficult path — the path of truth — over comfort. In an era where silence is often safer, you have remained vocal; where compromise is tempting, you have stood firm; and where fear silences many, you have spoken with conviction.

You are not just a journalist; you are a watchdog of society, a defender of the voiceless and a relentless advocate for justice. Your work in human rights advocacy has not only exposed injustice but has also inspired hope, reminding us all that the fight for equity and fairness must never be abandoned.

As a no-nonsense and fearless comrade, your leadership transcends titles. You lead by example — through discipline, consistency and an unyielding commitment to what is right. You have shown us that leadership is not about convenience but about responsibility; not about popularity but about purpose.

On this special day, we at Ogun FIBAN celebrate you not just for your accomplishments but for the values you represent. You have taught us that the legacies of past heroes must not be admired from afar but must be actively sustained through our daily actions — because, indeed, we are all writing the history that future generations will inherit.

Your journey reminds us that time is fleeting but impact is eternal. And in your lifetime, you have etched your name in the hearts of many and in the conscience of society.

As you mark this new chapter, we pray that the Almighty Allah grants you renewed strength, sound health and greater wisdom to continue your noble crusade. May your voice never be dimmed, your courage never be weakened and your relevance never be diminished.

Happy Birthday to a true icon, a fearless patriot and a leader par excellence.

Signed:
Chief Olalekan A. Shoyinka
